A 86 kilometers flat opening stage takes us from Mendefera to Dekemhare in Eritrea. It’s most riders first ever trip to this African country, but there are several great sprinters lining up here, hoping to get hold of the leader’s jersey on the first day of the race.
According to the bookmakers
Davis
Greipel
Hutarovich
are the fast men to look out for in the sprint.
The race starts on a graveled road with excellent weather conditions, as you would expect here in Africa.
14 kilometers into the stage, and the crowd has reasons to cheer! Four riders have been allowed to attack clear of the peloton, and they’re
Lemus Davila
Kastrantas
Bonnin
and home rider
Amanuel
They hold a lead of exactly one minute as they ride up the toughest hill of the day. It’s a short and uncategorized one, but the riders still need to handle steep sections of 11 percent 71 kilometers away from home.
It’s an inspired ride from
Amanuel
as he wins the first intermediate sprint and secures himself six bonus seconds!
Lemus Davila
Kastrantas
followed just behind in that sprint, which came too quick for the photographers to get their cameras up, sorry for that. Their lead is up to three minutes 58 kilometers from the finishing line.
Khalilikhosroshani
bridges the gap up to the breakaway at the foot of today’s first and only categorized climb 47 kilometers away from home. They lead the peloton by 3’22.
It’s a mountain jersey for
Kastrantas!
The Greek timed his move to perfection, going past
Amanuel
in the final hundred meters before the top of the climb.
The peloton has started to cut their gap though, as they’re now 3’05 ahead, with 41 kilometers left.
Lemus Davila
wins the final intermediate sprint 26 kilometers from the finishing line, ahead of
Amanuel
Kastrantas
Khalilikhosroshani
was forced to let the four others go as he wasn’t able to match their acceleration, and he finds himself 25 seconds behind the breakaway and 1’05 ahead of the peloton, which seems to control the escapees well.
It’s a determined chase from
Team WWE
Hollister
but they’re struggling to reel the front four back! They’re still 1’05 behind 17 kilometers away from home.
But they just accelerated a bit more back in the peloton, and 12 kilometers from the finishing line
Jeandesbosz
makes the catch! We’re definitely looking at a bunch sprint today.
8200 meters to go, and no real sprint train has formed. Though, Team WWE are trying to set up something nice for their sprinter. At the head of the peloton it’s
Sutherland
leading
Sambris
Jeandesbosz
Pineau
Gottfried
Greipel
On their inside is
Betancur
Davis
Abdallah
Seledkov
Nazaret
while
Hansen
Bozic
Hutarovich
are squeezed between them and the Greipel’s train.
Behind and on the right of Hutarovich you see
Vasylyuk
Nelson
Hochmann
3500 meters left and no team managed to form their own train! Up in front it’s
Betancur
Hansen
leading a train consisting of
Davis
Bozic
Hutarovich
Gottfried
Greipel
with
Dawit
on their outside.
On the right side of the road it’s
Pineau
Hochmann
Abdallah
Bazajev
This is magic! In a blink of a second, we suddenly have three trains, which all look very good. It’s only 2100 meters left, and on the left we have
Betancur
Brea
Davis
In the middle are
Hansen
Bozic
Hutarovich
Awit
While on the right
Pineau
Gottfried
Greipel
run the show.
The sprint opens with 1400 meters left, and
Davis
launches immediately!
Hutarovic
was unfortunate and was blocked by his own lead out man Hansen, thus losing his great position. The front 14 riders are
Brea
Davis
Bozic
Gottfried
Dawit
Greipel
Nelson
Sohrabi
Betancur
Pineau
Hansen
Hutarovich
Vasylyuk
Ferrari
(Sorry for the green circle, forgot to remove it.)
Davis
storms to the stage win with only 500 meters left!
Bozic
Greipel
Sohrabi
Lorenzetto
try to come closer, but the Aussie is flying up front!
Davis
it is! A superb sprint sees him dominate the final kilometer and take a deserved win.
Greipel
comes home second, while
Sohrabi
takes a somewhat surprising third ahead of
Lorenzetto
Bozic
Vasylyuk
Brambilla
Ferrari
Bazajev
Pineau
round off the top 10 at this opening stage.
Ouch! The peloton splits in two during the sprint, with a big gap opening up. Overall contenders like
Txurruka
Landa
Serpa
Arroyo
Danielson
Soler
are all at the wrong side of the split. They can just hope the time keepers won’t recognise the gap.
Fernández Oliveira
calls it a day and stops racing with 1600 meters left for no good reason. He just stops and will not start tomorrow’s stage.
The time keepers are alert to the gap in the peloton, and they give favourites like
Serpa
Arroyo
a time loss of 1’29 to the others! That definitely puts the pressure on them before tomorrow’s Queen stage.
