Tour de San Luis - Stage 7
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_001_zps443c98da.png

Final stage of the Tour de San Luis and the flat profile comes at 150km in total. Those hills may appear steeper than they are, but it will be interesting to see if pure flat sprinters suffer.

For GC-leader Nicacio and all other well-placed riders it's all about avoiding any trouble. Given his narrow lead on Beltran (9 seconds), we may also wonder if we will see a fight for minor bonus seconds instead of a breakaway going early?!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_002_zps8c931f52.jpg

No, it's the business as usial: a 7-men-group attacked right from the start and are allowed a 5'20"-gap with still 118km remaining:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Affonso (KoM's 2nd, no chance to challenge for the win though)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Uwizeyimana
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Umerbekov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Sequera
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Piamonte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Soto Pereira

Some notable names like Schwab or Sequera, but no real GC-threat (unless we will see a huge fail by the bunch).. Affonso took the KoM-sprint, but that won't change anything.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_003_zpsc1c99eb3.jpg

It ain't looking like we will see the peloton failing: 81km to go and teams like Bank of Ireland and Nordeus already start to reduce the gap to 4 minutes!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_004_zps9bb29e40.jpg

Almost the same situation 42km before finish: Ireland, Nordeus are now joined by Azteca and the gap is down to 2'20" in the meantime.

Strong crosswinds (41kmh) may be a factor today. Of course all GC-contenders have to take care of their position if anything goes wrong here.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_005_zps52a517f2.jpg

The escapees keep on fighting, but their lead is down to less a minute with now 17km remaining. Sequera takes a final bottle of water (hopefully), but will it be enough for this group to hold off the hard chasing bunch?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_006_zps051155f0.jpg

10km and the gap is down to 32" now. At least the peloton ain't given an easy time, as especially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Bank of Ireland already goes all-in for Drapac and something like a train.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_007_zpsd719fc6a.jpg

5km and the gap remains at 31"! The escapees may actually hope for something now and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Sequera tries to go for a late solo-move!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_008_zps3efedef2.jpg

He established a gap quickly and the peloton is still 30" behind the now 2nd group of escapees! The teams form their trains now, so let's have a look here:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Harrison
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hawkins
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Schinker
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Stankovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Hocevar

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png JJ Haedoi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Cruz
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Dupont
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Angaritai439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png LS Haedo

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_009_zpsfcffe24c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Sequera though enters the final corner (1.5km to go) with still a gap on this bunch.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab also established a small gap on their former breakaway companions and tries to close the gap on Sequera!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_011_zps59116dc9.jpg

The two enter the final kilometre with still a 30"-advantage on the peloton, which swallows the other escapees now under the kite!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hawkins/Drapac established themselves a huge gap on the other sprinters in the meantime, with just i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Schinker hanging on!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Crespo/JJ Haedo already several metres behind with the former breakaway group in between.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_012_zps12fb9c97.jpg

Sequera and a few metres behind Schwab still with an advantage, but the trio Hawkins/Drapac/Schinker is moving forward fast now!

It looks like JJ Haedo is far too late to challenge for the win here.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_013_zps510de7fa.jpg

Sequera gives all he can to hold on to his gap and as Schwab can't really bridge this gap, it ain't looking too bad..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_014_zps45fce012.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac overtakes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab with the line approaching, and he comes with an impressive speed now!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Schinker can't follow. From the right side it's another fast finisher in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png JJ Haedo. Too late though.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_015_zpsbd7db760.jpg

And it's also too late for Drapac, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Sequera lungs in for a nice stage-victory on this final day! The PCT-team, that had some tough days here so far, with at least something eventually.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac 2nd and this may be his chance to go for the points-jersey, actually (Drapac 39, Haedo 43, Beltran 44)!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_016_zpse49c3666.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png JJ Haedo though managed to sprint for 3rd place, with an unlucky i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Schwab missing out on this podium today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Schinker completes the Top-5, as other sprinters like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Dupont or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png LS Haedo missed the powerful kick by Ireland earlier in the sprint.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_017_zpsc915ed0d.jpg

Good news for all GC-riders, as we had no splits due to crosswinds today. So no major changes, which means that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Nicacio takes out the Tour de San Luis 2014 ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Beltran and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Castano. An interesting race it was, with several GC-changes in all crucial stages.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png De Greef, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Rudaskov to complete the Top-5 for good results. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rodas, stage-winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Adamou, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Godoy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png McConvey and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Ardila round up the Top-10.

Riders like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Rosskopf (13th) or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Kasa (14th) might have hoped for more, and of course same goes for teams like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Maloja (Fumic 22nd, Schwab 34th) or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Mobil (Ferrari 35th) in particular. Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Chiquita, who lost Haga (69th) due to his crash early into the race.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_018_zps5ebf39a0.jpg

The Points-Classification was maybe the most interesting battle today: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png JJ Haedo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Drapac missed out on the stage, but did just enough to share this competition (both 59 points) eventually!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/SanLuis14_7_019_zpsd64e1e88.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/evo.png Vosekalns had nothing to fear today and celebrates his KoM-lead ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Affonso. A nice achievement for the team, that had no real GC-contender - except of maybe Vosekalns himself (21st).
