The sprinters are back to contest for the final two stages with Avelino (Prio), Greipel (WWE), Davis (Hollistar), Kupfernagel (AMEX), and Mezgec (Sram) listed as possible winners.
Zabriskie leads them off the start line, and all he was to do now is survive 2 more "flat" stages, no pressure .
Seledkov (Bintang), Mockus (Ekspla), Dahlberg (Vattenfall),
Dennis (Adira), Van Leigen (UPC), and Slagter (BCR) start the opening attacks, but WWE and Prio-Porto bring them back. Too many riders up front for their liking.
But as they are caught they go again, except for Mockus, and this time WWE and Prio see no problem now with 5 riders instead of 6. So ING takes to the front of the peloton and allows the breakaway to get away. So really just bad luck for Mockus.
Kaupas isn't going to take this bullying from the peloton and goes after the breakaway for Mockus and Ekspa.
And Kaupas joins the breakaway just in time for the first KoM without the peloton chasing. I guess they thought Mockus was to strong? Either way Ekspa does get a guy into the breakaway.
The only man interested in the points is Seledkov, who already came in with 8 points. Now add 6 more to his total, plus with the cat. 1 climb coming up, he could be the new KoM leader going past Hutchings (Ekspla) at the end of the day. Surprising that Kaupas isn't trying to help Hutchings keep his jersey.
The category 1 climb is a beast. ING are forced to set the tempo, and they are doing a great job keeping it around 5 minutes. They can't give the breakaway to much of a lead because Dahlberg and Seledkov are just under 4 minutes from Zabriskie's GC lead.
Nearing the top Dahlberg goes onto the attack, looks like he wants in on the KoM competition; Seledkov follows.
It's a back and forth fight all the way to the marker. But Seledov just nicks Dahlberg at the top giving him the maximum 16 points and if he can finish the stage our new KoM leader.
The climb has dropped the breakaway down to 4 riders, with Dennis and Kaupas being left behind. While in the peloton Anaya is the only rider that can't keep up.
After the climb ING keeps King in the rotation for the pace making but pulls back the rest of their riders quickly sending a message to the sprinter's team to start working. But I don't think they realize they might have caused a problem on their own by doing so, the breakaway is now 9 minutes up the road!
100kms to go, Dennis and Kaupas have fought back to rejoin the breakaway with 7'15" lead over the peloton. So it looks like AMEX and WWE have gotten ING's message.
25kms later their advantage is just 5 minutes. But then again all the breakaway needs to do is reach the downhill section into the finish and they should be home free.
The gap hits 3'20" and ING have now stopped working on the front all together as Zabriskie's lead is safe. This leaves the chase up to WWE, Prio, and AMEX.
Major disaster! Gerdemann (Sram), 2nd in GC, gets a flat with 41kms to go!
Vasyliv and Koch comeback to try and bring him back into the peloton.
Another flat, this time Blank (Rothaus). Gerdemann can use the fellow German as he is a decent time trialist. And because as of the last 10kms his Sram teammates haven't been able to put a dent into rejoining the peloton, still 2 minutes back.
Is Gerdemann going to run out of time? The breakaway has made it to the downhill section with 22kms to go with the peloton 1'37" behind.
He is right there, so close yet so far away...
While Gerdemann is fighting for his life, the breakaway is starting to build a little hope, except for Dennis and Kaupas who have been dropped once again. The downhill is going to make it very difficult for the peloton to make the catch.
Dennis and Kaupas are pulled back by a charging Kessiakoff.
Gerdemann is now starting to slip further behind, it's now 2'25".
Kessiakoff did most of the work, but Barredo finishes off the catch of the breakaway with 6.5kms to go. Does this open the door for Gerdemann to catchup?
It doesn't look like it as the sprinters are gearing up. WWE goes Paulinho, Pineau, then Greipel. As AMEX lines up with Keough and Kupfernagel.
Avelino takes the back end of AMEX's line with Vasylyuk and Feillu. As Cucinotta, Bazajev, and Davis chose WWE.
Kupfernagel kicks from 1,500 meters out, too early (again)?
Avelino decides to go right around Kupfernagel.
Greipel sees that moves and goes after Avelino.
Avelino is holding on strong, Bazajev makes a nice move off on the lefthand side, while Greipel is searching for more power.
And now here comes Davis into the action.
And Allan Davis comes out of nowhere to steal the stage! A close finish from 2nd to 4th, Bazajev-Greipel-Avelino in that order. With Lorenzetto with a good sprint jumping up to take 5th.
The sprint was so fast it opened up a split in the peloton!
41 riders get caught out, the best rider being Cornu as he is going to get burnt for bad positioning, losing 1'43" and his 4th overall.
But that can't be worse then what Gerdemann just went through. A horrible flat has cost him 2nd overall as he never recovered, losing 4'16" on the stage.
And to cap the day off, Anaya is the first rider to abandon the tour as he didn't make the time limit.
