Avelino, Kupfernagel, Greipel, and Davis are the favourites to grab the leader's jersey on day 1, standing in their way is 166kms of racing.
It takes a few kilometers for the riders to warm-up their legs before
Kaupas (Ekspla) gives us the opening attack for this week long race.
Terrible start for Anaya (Repsol) as he taps wheels with the man in front of him and goes down hard near the back of the peloton. Lucky only bringing himself to the ground.
The crash puts the peloton in an awkward situation as they don't want to leave a man behind this early into stage 1 of a week long race, but by allowing Anaya to comeback into the peloton, Kaupas has jumped his lead to 3 minutes and counting.
As Kaupas hits 4 minutes ahead, it is now clear that today is going to be a one man show (and some really great TV time for Ekspla).
This has to be rather lonely ride for Kaupas, but all signs look good
so far with a 4'35" lead at the highest altitude on today's route.
Easy points for Kaupas at the first sprint point, 81kms to go (5'30" lead).
Best part about having a solo leader, the sprints for the remaining points!
With 2nd and 3rd place picking up 4 and 2 points respectively,
most of the sprinters made an attempt for it.
But it's Avelino (Prio-Porto) and Grepiel (WWE) who were
located at the front the peloton that picked up the points.
Kaupas' lead is down to just 1'30" as he takes another 6 points at the final sprint point of the day.
And again Avelino and Greipel clean up the rest of the points available.
The peloton backs off a bit after the checkpoint which allows Kaupas to wedge his lead back up to 2'15" with 20kms to go. But a quick glance into Kaupas face tells the story, I don't even think he believes he can hold on for win. Your legs can only keep pedaling for so long.
After Prio-Porto had controlled the peloton for most of the day, WWE and Hollistar now start making a strong appearance at the front with 15kms to go.
5kms to go and it's all WWE now, the gap is closing fast.
Got to give props to Kaupas for lasting this long.
Hollistar challenges WWE with their own train on the right for Davis.
The worst sprinter positioned is Avelino about 30 riders deep.
WWE starts their sprint 2,500 meters out, the finish isn't even in sight!
Jérôme Pineau is leading the charge for WWE as Davis has Héctor Fabian Aguilar doing all the work. Mirko Lorenzetto is on top of things and is the first sprinter to tag onto the back of a train, Hollistar's train.
Kupfernagel is behind Lorenzetto.
Greipel kicks with about 1,900 meters left. Must be scared of Kuapus,
who is remarkably still fighting, being generous I would give a 10 second lead.
Either Greipel tires out early or is saving energy because Lorenzetto tries to overtake him with Kupfernagel, in perfect position, on his wheel. While Aguilar is trying to keep pushing forward for Allan Davis, but he doesn't want to sprint for Hollistar for some reason.
Kaupas can see the finish line, is it meant to be!
Mezgec (Sram), who was following Kupfernagel has found another gear. And Saramotins is giving Ekspla another option for a great result.
Davis and Greipel have disappeared off the front completely.
Kaupas finally gets to see another cyclist, just 300 meters
from the finish line after leading for almost the whole race.
A bunch of the lower prestigious sprinters are appearing near the front
after saving their energy and watching Davis and Greipel fade away:
Gatis Smukulis
Assan Bazajev
Claudio Cucinotta
Andriy Vasylyuk
Honorio Machado
Saïd Haddou
Romain Feillu
Luka Mezgec
Mohamed Harrif Salleh
As Lorenzetto goes by Kaupus and into the lead, Saramotins, who didn't have time to give teammate Kaupas a pat on the back as he rocketed by, is closing in to try and still give Ekspla that stage win.
But Lorenzetto hangs on to take the victory and the leader's jersey with
Saramotins keeping the Ekspla team bus happy with 2nd.
Bazajev takes the final podium spot for ING after beating out all the other late kicking sprinters.
It's an extremely close finish for the 4th through 10th placings. Claudio Cucinotta, Honorio Machado, Luka Mezgec, and Saïd Haddou all coming out of nowhere going past Avelino, Kupfernagel, Greipel, and Davis within the final meters. And getting the last ranking point for the stage by finishing 8th is the most aggressive rider of the day Kaupas.
So what happened to the big name sprinters? Kaupas happened. He forced them to start the sprint from way, way, way to far out and they just couldn't hold their speed that long. Allowing the second tier sprinters to steal the show.
Or perhaps Avelino and Greipel tired themselves out at the sprint points?
