Tour de San Luis - Stage 2
Kami
The second stage and also the first of 3 mountain stages. The final climb is short, but very steep. Another factor might be the very narrow roads. Will there already be a battle between the favorites, or will they wait for the next mountain stages?

The obvious favorite is Valverde. His main challengers will be Pozzovivo and Van den Broeck. Although other great climbers like Ratiy, Marzano and Nazaret will try to challenge.

8 riders tried their luck today; Maaskant, Salerno, Vandborg, Quintana, Bennet, Preidler, Hischlein and Lagutin.

The first intermediate sprint is won by Maaskant. In front of Lagutin and Hischlein. But wouldn't it be best to save some energy instead of sprinting. The chances that those bonification will be decisive are non existent.

Next up is the KoM sprint. Salerno takes it in front of Bennet and Preidler.

With 80km to go, they have a 7' lead on the peleton. 10km later at the second KoM, they still have 7'. This KoM is won by Preidler. Salerno second, Lagutin third.

The final sprint is won by Lagutin, in front of Maaskant and Preidler. At this point they have still a 5'30" lead on the peleton.

At the foot of the climb, with 5km to go they still have 2' on the peleton. The winner will most likely come from these 8. Salerno looks to be the strongest as he leads the whole climb.

Meanwhile, the peleton splits up and a huge surprise. Van den Broeck and Niemic are caught behind, getting blocked by a few slow climbing riders.

Back at the front, Salerno has dropped all of his companions. He is starting the final km alone and looks to have won this one.

The big favorites didn't do anything. The only leaders that attacked were Raisin and Kern. They gained a bit of time on the others.

But it's all about this man; Salerno with a surprise win for Ferrari!

Valverde and Pozzovivo finish close to each other, saving themselves for the next decisive stages.

And the big loser of the day; Jurgen Van den Broeck. Almost his whole team dropped back to help him, but to no avail. He loses around 1 minute. Also, no Pirelli rider in the first group, this isn't good for them at all.
