After 169 kilometers we will know the name of the winner of the first stage in Tour de San Luis. It’s a stage made for sprinters and there are quite a few good sprinters at the start but 3 of them seem to have a little bit more strength than the others: Greipel, Richeze and Arashiro
On the first and only categorized climb of the day 7 riders got away from the pack. Those were: Serrano, Mazet, Landaluze, Costa, Ortega, Bobridge and Vermeltfroot
But none of them expressed a real interested for the KoM points and it was Costa who passed the summit first, followed by Landaluze and Bobridge. With no other climbs on the route the Portuguese will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow
On the downhill section 3 more riders joined the leading group to bring the number of riders there up to 10. The new riders were Dionne, Bru Pascal and Grau, the last one being the second rider from UniCredit present in the breakaway. A duo from Telenor made by Nordhaug and Wilman also attacked but they never managed to join the leading group
Costa seemed to be the strongest rider in the first half of the stage and after taking the King of the Mountains jersey he also won the first intermediate sprint, this time in front of Serrano and Dionne
At the second and last sprint of the day, Costa was nowhere and it was Dionne who took the points and bonification seconds in front of Landaluze and Bru Pascal
The escapes had an advantage of over 5 minutes in front of the pack but they didn’t manage to stay in front until the end. Ortega and Grau were the last 2 escapes to be caught but they didn’t even got to the 10 kilometers banner
With all the escapes caught, the moves from the final sprint started. Three leading trains were made, one by Bbox, one by Intesa and one by Red Bull. Jeandesbosz was leading the Bouygues train for Greipel, with Neves also trying to hang one. Lorenzetto was leading the Intesa train for Bongiorno, with Richeze right behind them, while Jelloul was leading the way for Arashiro, with Friedman, Giaux and Galdos right after them
But when the actual sprint started, the longest train, the one made by Red Bull was gone and it was all between Intesa and Bbox, with the first ones having an slightly advantage
Bongiorno made his move quite early, jumping from Lorenzetto’s wheel with 2 kilometers to go. Richeze quickly followed him, while Greipel seemed to be struggling to hang on
Inside the last kilometer it was clear who will finish on the podium today. Greipel looked like having secured the third place, while in front Bongiorno and Richeze were fighting for the stage win. But Richeze seemed stronger than his compatriot now
With only a few meters left from the stage, Richeze made his move and powered away from Bongiorno, who after a great lead – out from Lorenzetto will have to defend now only the second place
And Richeze takes the opening stage from San Luis in front of Bongiorno and Greipel, becoming the first leader of the race. But he won’t enjoy that for too long as tomorrow’s the queen stage of the race and the climbers will show what they are made of
