Tour de Pologne - Stage 1
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_1.jpg
It`s been quite a while now since the Tour of Pologne have been part of the Man Game. The last time in 2008 with Boogerd as winner and the only rider, who was in the top 10 and still participating today is Cobo for Bianchi. Also 2007 the only top 10 rider in De la Fuente is today riding for the German team. Maybe a good sign for them as they know the race? At least they belong to the very big favorites here.

But before we will have an opportunity for the sprinters. First half is very flat and leads to a final circuit with a small bump there. It`s not as hard as it has looked on some profiles but it will be interesting to see if the pure flat sprinters like i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Chicchi or i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Cooke will suffer there, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Kennaugh or i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Corioni belong to the better "puncheurs".

12 riders were allowed to ride away today. None of them is a very good puncheur and could be dangerous on the harder stages.
Obviously the big favourites and sprinters didn`t allow their riders to join the break, while the other teams more or less have one guy in there with Koppert having even two.

The first sprint was won by Wen Hao Li in a close decision.
1. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Li
2. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Matthews
3. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Cohen

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_4.jpg

Saab, Rapha Condor and Venchi have the strongest sprinters here and so they are doing the pace. A bit surprising that Saab needs to do the most for the weakest sprinter of these 3. But probably the fact that they only concentrate on the flat stages mainly while the others have top 5 contenders could be the reason.
Also Vespa for overall favourite Ginanni has one man working.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_6.jpg

2nd sprint and again a close sprint as all riders want the bonus seconds and it`s again the Chinese champion Li.
1. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Li
2. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bar
3. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Cohen
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_7.jpg

With 91km to go it`s now Venchi doing a lot of work. Corioni obviously feels strong today and so they put pressure on the breakaway bringing the gap under 5.30.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_8.jpg

The first of two mountain sprints of the day and so obviously most riders want to get these small points. It won`t have big influence on the overall KoM ranking but at least wearing the jersey for at least one day would be great for these riders. It`s a young guy from Israel being the first crossing the line.
1. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Cohen
2. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Longo Borghini
3. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Barta
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_10.jpg

A little bit late but the last intermediate sprint was surprisingly not being fought. Obviously the riders know that the only chance to survive against the peloton is to save their energy as the gap is down to 3min with 50km to go. Will be tough to stay away.
1. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Matthews
2. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Pauwels
3. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Vermeltfoort
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_11.jpg

The next KoM sprint therefore was a bit more contested. None of the first KoM was able to get points here, so it`s now up to the stage result if Cohen or Pauwels gets the jersey.
1. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Pauwels
2. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Van der Sande
3. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Bar
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_13.jpg

17km to go and the group is down to 2. Only i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Matthews and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Reijnen areleft 57s ahead of the peloton.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_14.jpg

And it`s Saab again with 7 riders now, who form a sprint train for Chicchi. Behind him you can already see Ulanowski, Corioni and Markov, while Kennaugh is still a bit behind.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_16.jpg

This corner always looked dangerous on the last passings. But until the last lap the riders have been able to avoid a crash. Now it`s Ginanni`s best helper in i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Bosisio, who went down first pulling several other riders with him. Biggest names next to him probably i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Smukulis and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Santambrogio. So the biggest names have been lucky here.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_17.jpg

All riders ahead of Chicchi now with Brammeier and Westling directly ahead of him. Corioni obviously won the fight for his wheel, while Matthews in the middle and Reijnen finally have been caught now.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_19.jpg

With 2,7km to go there are just 2 helpers left as the others already worked a lot during the stage and it`s Westling now accelerating. Also Kennaugh and Cooke now found the way to the front and are behind Corioni now. Also Ulanowski, Gatto, Markov and Borrajo in this row.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_21.jpg

700m and Chicchi needs to go into the wind. This might be too early for the Italian.
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/Pologne/mg_pologne_1_22.jpg

And indeed he was overtaken by others. It`s still an Italian celebrating today. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Claudio Corioni with a big win here will be the first leader in Pologne. Chicchi at least saves a good 2nd ahead of Kennaugh. Also Cooke as 4th with a strong finish. Wegmann as 6th probably had the highest speed in the end but coming from too far behind. Could be a good sign for him as the form seems to be alright.
The fight for the KoM was won by Cohen. Although he was in a late crash he arrived in the first group ahead of Pauwels, while the earlier crash around Bosisio couldn`t make it back into the peloton.
Felx Odebrecht even had to abandon and might miss the Bianchi team a lot now.
