Penultimate stage here in Pologne.. and what a challenge: 191km in total, the peloton awaits a tough loop with 15 climbs on the menu! It's not just a key stage for the GC, but also for the KoM-battle.
Will Bole manage to remain in yellow after this brutal parcours? Or will top-favorite Mendes finally show something here? Haas so far looked like the strongest of all puncheurs, but anything can happen in a stage like that!
Good news for the spectators (and their respective managers) to see the battle for the KoM-competition on today, now that a breakaway group with 6 riders looks set to go for a long attempt:
Salas (6th in KoM, 48pts)
Wurf
Rubiano Chavez (8th in KoM, 30pts)
Infantino (4th in KoM, 52pts)
Fahnert
Bakhin (1st in KoM, 56pts)
Wurf (26th in GC) and Fahnert (16th) also make for an interesting duo for the GC-contention! Should be an entertaining group to follow!
It's indeed a thrilling battle on every of those mountain sprints. Infantino decided to put some pressure on the group and Bakhin and went for something like a solo-attempt in order to grab as many points as possible. With five of today's eight sprints done, Bakhin so far defended a narrow lead though:
KoM-competition Bakhin 90 Infantino 88 Salas 84
It ain't looking too good for him though, as the Russian can't follow the escaping group anymore! 100km remaining and the KoM-leader sees Infantino/Salas/Chavez dropping him with still plenty of points to grab!
It's indeed the key for Bakhin to lose his shirt today, as the leading group maintains their lead with two more sprints going to Infantino:
KoM-competition Infantino 120 Salas 102 Bakhin 98
As soon as the first GC-favorites would attack the peloton, the breakaway group would quickly be reeled in though. We still have 30km to go and with several attacks going, a group of 3 riders established a small lead on the peloton (51 riders remaining):
Sayar, Appleby and Richardson!
The race wouldn't settle down and Fernandez, as well as Kulhavy, would try to join this leading trio a few minutes later.
They actually did, but 12km before finish, this attempt is all over, as the peloton pulled them back prior to the penultimate climb. And here's where we see the most promising GC-contenders attacking:
Martinez
Borges
Gaimon
Haas
Beltran
Schurter
Bole
Race-leader Bole trying to counter this attack. He might have to have a chat with teammate Martinez though, as it was him to launch this move first!
GC's 6th Rosa and Kulhavy would try to join this elite group a few seconds later..
And this may be a crucial split there: the leading group goes into pieces with Schurter putting up a huge pace!
Schurter, Martinez, Gaimon and Beltran drop group Haas/Bole/Borges 10km before finish, opening up a 21"-gap quickly!
Bad news for Haas and Bole in particular, as they are reeled in by the chasing bunch a few moments later! And even worse: the group quickly lost more than a minute on the leading four!
Still no sign of Mendes attacking, but at least he's one of those setting the pace in the 57-men-bunch now..
Feillu (5th in GC) is the only one out of this peloton trying to jump behind the leading group on this descend, yet facing a 33"-gap with just 4km to go..
The line honours are likely to go to either Beltran (2nd in GC) or Schurter though, as the duo drops Gaimon/Martinez on the short hilltop finish!
Feillu 39" in arrears and the peloton struggles heavily: 1'55" on Beltran, who should slip into yellow today!
Beltran is celebrating a huge stage-win here, gapping runner-up Schurter by further 16" eventually!
+ 49" for Martinez, Gaimon and Feillu, who did well to bridge across that gap.. No sign of the bunch in the back..
+ 2'06" for Jumabekov as 7th, followed by Kolobnev, Fernandez, Rosa and Mendes!
+ 2'22" for the bigger group with Bole, Haas and Geschke!
As said before, this was definitely a huge victory for Beltran, who takes the race-lead by 1'25" on Feillu and 1'28" on Schurter! Bole goes down from 1st to 6th, but his team did well to place Martinez inside the Top-5 now.
Haas (9th), Kolobnev (13th) and Mendes (14th) have now to target for the final stage and some aggressive racing there. There's quite a gap to make up between Beltran, the Top-5 and those top-favorites, who are about 3 minutes down on the GC-lead at this point!
