The shortest (165km) of the remaining three hilly stages, but a challenging profile with a steady up and down throughout the entire stage. Featuring a short ascend close to the finish, we may see more attacks than in the opening day.
Will race-leader Borges hang on with the best puncheurs? And how will Geschke or Bole do? Looks like a good stage for those punchy sprinters, but top-puncheurs like Mendes, Haas or Kolobnev may go for a tough pace, too.
Four riders went clear early. All of them lost more than 16 minutes in yesterday's stage and shouldn't be a threat for the GC. Anyway, with several KoM-sprint on the menu, there's of course something to go for today:
Bajadali, Salas, Rake and Infantino make for a quite strong break of the day!
It's getting more interesting with a second group of four riders jumping behind as soon as the peloton reached the first mountain sprint:
Rosa (+ 0.20 in GC)
Lammertin (+ 0.16 and 4th in KoM, 26pts)
Rubiano Chavez
Wengelin (3rd in KoM, 40pts)
So at least two riders, who will aim for the mountain competition on first hand (Bakhin leading with 56pts prior to the stage) and also two possible threats for the GC today!
The chasing group catches up to the early escapees with 63km remaining, and Rosa takes out the third mountain-sprint immediately. Wengeling couldn't hang on with that group, so is likely to miss out on his chance to attack the polka dot-lead..
Rosa would also take the next sprint, with Lammertink adding points to his bucket as well:
Provisional KoM-competition Bakhin 56 Hansen 54 Lammertink 46
We're jumping into the final 30km of the day and the penultimate climb: the breakaway holds on to a 2-minutes-gap on the peloton, where we now see more serious attacks!
Feillu launches his move, with Borges and also Haas trying to follow quickly!
Feillu established a notable gap soon, while Borges/Haas were pulled back by the bunch! Beltran (6th in GC, + 0.12) on the move now, 23km to go!
The 7-men-group at the front crosses the second to last KoM-sprint with still an advantage on the bunch. Salas takes this sprint ahead of Infantino and we are likely to see a very close KoM-ranking after the stage!
And maybe some notable changes in the GC, too: Beltran and Feillu join the breakaway group 15km to the finish!
The peloton (reduced to 65 riders) is down by 49" at this point, now entering a last descend prior to a short climb close to the line..
10km to go and the gap remains at 46", while Eddie Stobart, Risa and Nordeus share most of the work in the chase now.
Most notable names (as for the GC) being dropped today: Barta (3rd in GC) and Sweeting (4th)!
It will be a close one for the escaping group: Haas, followed by Borges and Bole, accelerates on the final short climb, cutting the gap down to 30" quickly!
In the meantime, Rosa took out another mountain-sprint (the last today), but misses out closely on the polkda dot:
Provisional KoM-competition
Bakhin56 Rosa54 Hansen54 Infantino52 Lammertink50 Salas48
Haas and Bole managed to join the leading group! While GC-leader Borges fights hard to do the same, yet facing a 27"-gap on the leading group with just 2.3km to go!
The peloton with riders like Geschke, Mendes or Kolobnev is down by a minute on the leading eleven!
Bole, Infantino and Beltran lead this group into the final km! Bole as the strongest sprinter, of course..
..for the win: Bole takes the stage ahead of Infantino and Beltran, with Haas, Feillu and also Rosa putting some pressure on race-leader Borges..
..who fought hard, but finishes the day off with a 48"-gap on those eleven riders (and also within the same time as the first peloton)! Borges is likely to lose his yellow today.
Yap, he does: Boles slips into yellow thanks to gapping the bunch by almost a minute today. Beltran 2nd ahead of Lammertink, Haas, Feillu and Rosa! Still at least two key stages to come, but Bole definitely looked strong today.
