Paris Nice - stage 7
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/parcours_zpsac33f33a.jpg

Finally some relief from the relentless climbs that have battered the riders - indeed there were several very tired looking faces after yesterdays leg sapping climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck surrendered his leaders jersey to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Martin who has been excellent all race.

Did I say relief - of course this 'race to the sun' could never let up today the riders like the flat stage earlier on face massive winds - disappointment perhaps for some of the young sprint pups who may prefer to hide in their team cars suckling at their team managers teets.

We get a six man break - and this really is the perfect day to get in it - the wind could make the chase very difficult.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a1_zpseb46efef.jpg

Here are the lucky six:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Dees
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Villella
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Clement
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/std.png Lopez Garcia
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Cuming

A real mix of riders here, for some like Weening and Clement it is a case of teams desperately trying to get more out of a race that has fallen a little short of expectations. For others like Villella it is a direct response from his usually cuddly and warm manager who has been reportedly barking mad at his teams inability to get into breaks. No such issues for Gazelle who have been everyones favourite getting in breakaways all day every day - well favoured as they have done nothing much at the business end of course.

They are not going to be allowed a completely free ride - such a large peloton is likely to carry a few teams hopeful of setting up a sprint even in very blustery conditions.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Simply Red Bull and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Project 1t4i are the teams whose sprinter Soupe and Kreder looked capable in the first sprint stage.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a2_zps0d3cfc9a.jpg

No real interest in the intermediates the break rolled over both. The interest today is in the gaps and whether the wind can do anything. With 50km remaining the gap is just three minutes.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Tinkoff Credit Systems Bank add their very efficient team to the chase.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a3_zpsfa81a24c.jpg

Indeed now the weather is turning very sour as the rain lashes down and the wind is high - some riders do not fancy this and out the back door they go.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a4_zps447a4c70.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Costagli (28th on GC) is the biggest GC name of note in this first group.

Of course I say first group as there is no letting up at the front so we get more and more splinter groups falling off the back as climbers aplenty are falling off.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Rujano (18th GC)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Frank (17th GC)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza (21st GC)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Gomez Marchante (16th GC) are next to go.

Here is another of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Good Energy youngsters slipping off the back.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a5_zps21df23f5.jpg

This is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers and we can see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Pinot is struggling right at the back of the pack as well.

The i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Rothaus jerseys were around i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Krieger and indeed the young sprinter is next to drop.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a8_zpsbb801953.jpg

This flat by the coast run in is proving a real nasty one - it is usual in such days for the break to get some freedom but with 20km to go they have just 1.20 of a lead left.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a6_zps24d3fcc6.jpg

The Tinkoff and Simply Red Bull managers have really cracked the whip on this last road stage - neither have big ambitions tomorrow so it is all in. Never one to miss a good ganging i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png VolksWagen-Mapei's team manager instructs his team to join in the fun.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a7_zps0f916e6a.jpg

The pack is down to just 77 riders but things get even worse as this now split in two!

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a9_zpsf11ae4ec.jpg

GC guys i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Fothen (GC 9th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Velits (GC 13th) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Pinot (GC 12th) are in the second group.

So is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Tinkoff Credit Systems Bank sprinter Trusov as well as Kolesnikov (GC 14th) so back come the black clad troops on mass.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a10_zps76206d4e.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Simply Red Bull are on front on the first group. We have a race here!

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a11_zps0e2e0bcd.jpg

It is a bit of a mismatch with Tinkoff easily coming back merging the two groups again. Of course as they get back we get a lot of hesitation in the pack and this is to the advantage of the breakaway. How much have they got left now.

Their lead has gone back up 2 minutes with 10km left - they are in the wind but it looks very favourable for them now.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening decides his best chances are solo.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a12_zpsacc07f24.jpg

No dice though as he is closed down quickly - the break now hesitate and struggle in the wind slightly their lead is chopped back to a minute again.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a13_zps4c69a113.jpg

The reason is that finally Tinkoff have got their act together on the front, how long can they do this devestating pace though?

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a14_zpse26b38c2.jpg

We can see the jerseys of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Dan Martin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Tony Martin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Rein Taaramae near the front. These guys know how to ride in the rain and wind.

It is just a 76 man pack and all remaining GC riders need to be vigilant the dropped riders are 3 minutes plus back now and some will drop ranking points as a result.

The break perservere up front now just 6km left and two riders are slipping back along the seafront.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a15_zpsfab0de6f.jpg

Weening and Cuming are sliding back here, clearly Weening's move was all in. The guy doing the damage is Dees and realising he is the strongest he attacks with 5km to go.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a16_zpse0b563a8.jpg

4.5km to go:

Dees - - > Clement/Villella/Lopez Garcia at 9 seconds - - > Weening/Cuming at 26 seconds - - > Pack at 1.16

The pack look very unlikely to get back here with them now messing about getting some sort of sprint trains ready.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a17_zps52286dc8.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kolesnikov, Trusov i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Kreder is the first one.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Vaugranard, Soupe is the SRB one.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Westra, Oss are there for Gazelle with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev keeping Martin out of trouble.

Everyone else just seems to be struggling to survive really or look after a team leader with GC interests.

Up front Clement manages to catch Dees.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a18_zps262851e5.jpg

We have reached the kite and Dees and Clement are picking up speed. Lopez Garcia who has coped well for a climber is sprinting for third behind with Villella.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a19_zpsb36e38e0.jpg

Behind (and sorry for not catching it) the Tinkoff train has completely collapsed with Soupe sprinting alongside Oss.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a20_zps132145c4.jpg

The leaders are deep in the last klick and Clement having caught Dees does not have anything left for the sprint.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a21_zps174ae2bb.jpg

Villela is sticking to Lopez Garcia's wheel till the last minute in the battle for third.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a22_zpsd069e7ad.jpg

Dees then has more than enough to see of Clement he does the strongman pose and deservedly so.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a23_zpsdf6d907c.jpg

Clement is second, the second is succession for ING who just cannot get a win at this years Paris Nice.

Villela makes no attempt to get around Lopez Garcia, the Santander man moves inside the GC top 20 as a result of this ride.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a24_zpsd21232e8.jpg

Oss in the background takes 5th over Soupe, yes Gazelle could have taken that sprint!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Dekker wins the sprint from the pack.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a25_zpse60b805e.jpg

Stage results
Some sort of redemption for Festina and ING. Nice to see Gazelle get a good results also even if it may be tinged with what might have been. Most of the GC losers are in a group 4.27 back - bad day for them losing a couple of places on GC in most cases.
