It's the first hilly stage, and if the season so far is to mean anything, the downhill finish could make any sort of selection unlikely. Selection or not, race leader Yuri Trofimov is the favourite for the stage. His biggest rival is Stefan Schumacher, but with plenty of climbing today, theres a hint that a good mountain stat could be of small help - in which case look out for Taylor Phinney and Thomas Dekker. It could also be a good day for Luis Leon Sanchez.
A good stage for King of the Mountains points, and former leader Juul-Jensen is keen - taking the first climb by attacking clear of the peloton.
Kneisky took 2nd, and Craven 3rd.
Kneisky and Juul-Jensen tried to form a breakaway, joined by Haavardsholm, Kadri, Bouet and Haedo. But the peloton chased them down.
Juul-Jensen kept trying, next with Reda, Canecky, Berthou and Sulzberger.
Again no luck, but the next attempt worked. Its unlucky for Juul-Jensen as he has missed the move of 3: Kneisky, Serrano and Haavardsholm. Which is the order they cross the next Cat 2 climb
Cat 2 means points for more than the Top 3, so KoM leaders Geslin and Deignan attack. Deignan is able to close the gap by beating Geslin to 4th, and they decide to work together and try to catch the 3 leaders - but the gap they have to make up is 2'45.
The gap closed to 1'30 near the top of the 3rd climb, before an attack in the break for points extended it, and it was the same story on the 4th climb - gap down to a minute before an attack up front.
The thorn in their side is Kneisky. The Frenchman won both the 3rd and 4th climbs, plus the 2 intermediate sprints. Greedy, but effective, and closing the gap at the top of the KoM competition.
Meanwhile race radio reports that the peloton's pace of UBS, Koenigsegg and 1t4i has already reduced it to 90 riders - and suffering from yesterday's crash, Coppel has been dropped.
The road keeps going upwards now, and there are attacks from the peloton. They quickly cross to Deignan and Geslin who have had a somewhat wasted day of riding in no-mans land, scoring almost no KoM points. Moinard, Konig, Sorensen and Margaliot are the ones making a move.
Another KoM victory for Kneisky gives him a joint lead of the competition with Geslin, on 32. Serrano and Haavardsholm continue to watch on. 25km to go, and their lead is just 1'20 over an attacking Margaliot.
Konig and Sorensen are in pursuit of the Israeli, while Vueling attempt a stealth descent move away from the peloton with Lebas and Dekker.
That of course doesnt work, but as we start climbing again up to the final climb of the day - a Cat 2 - a big attack is launched in the peloton. Phinney, Dekker, Sanchez, Trofimov, Schumacher, Monfort, Diggle, Silva, Gastauer and Roux.
Lebas and Siutsou tag onto the move quickly, as the attackers merge together with the breakaway, Margaliot, Sorensen and Konig.
The GC favourites take control and set a high pace, Phinney leading over the top of the climb.
They needn't bother though. All 3 teams who were leading the peloton are represented, plus many others. The peloton has effectively sat up, and the gap is already 3 minutes.
This is disaster for B&O. Klemme is hiding somewhere, and it takes Keinath too long to finally react, as he strikes clear.
Vastaranta follows a little later. Too late!
Up front the leaders are on the descent, 15 riders who look in a great position to take those Top 15 positions in GC - particularly now they have dropped the 3 riders from the day long breakaway. Vueling and surprisignly Pendleton's are the only riders with 2 riders here, and Lebas is working on the front for Dekker.
Sorensen, the Brazilian Silva, and Konig all try to attack away on the descent but in reality they should just settle for being in this group in the first place, and cannot get away.
We quickly descend towards the finish and it is Roux, Phinney and Trofimov on the front as the sprint begins. Can it be a home victory for the Frenchman, a fightback from Phinney, or yet another Trofimov win?
As the American leads the way, Schumacher and Dekker are also close - a gap already emerging to the rest.
Phinney apparantely taking on the leadout role for Koenigsegg, and Trofimov will be loving this. But look out for Dekker, and also Schumacher on the far side!
Sanchez has moved into 5th as Roux fades, and it is all to play for with the line in sight - only Lebas and Konig are out of contention for a Top 10.
But Trofimov stops playing with the rest, and kicks for the line.
Two wins in a row, the defending champion is right on track!
It's very tight for 2nd - Schumacher edges out Dekker and Phinney.
And it is Gastauer who wins the tight battle for 5th, beating Margaliot, Monfort and Sorensen.
Haavardsholm and Kneisky finish 2 and a half minutes later - just ahead of Keinath who slots in between them and Serrano. Poor tactics by B&O to miss the move, and also odd to eventually send Keinath off in pursuit given he lost time yesterday and Klemme did not.
Vastaranta finished at 3'37, while Swift outsprinted Impey for 21st as the peloton finish at 4'47.
Time bonuses mean Trofimov now leads Schumacher at the top of the overall classification by 32 seconds, with just 39 seconds separating Schumacher in 2nd, and Silva in 15th.
Trofimov of course takes the Points jersey; Geslin and Kneisky share the KoM lead; Phinney remains best Young Rider; and Vueling are the leading team.
