Paris-Nice - Stage 8
alexkr00
Here it is, the final stage of this year's Paris - Nice. On Col d'Eze we will see the last attacks, where Gesink, Schleck or Sinkewitz will try to take their revenge for a mediocre ride so far, while Sella will try to defend the yellow jersey that he won after the queen stage of the race
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0001-57.png

Morizot, Offredo and Alex Ardila Cano were leading the race at the first intermediate sprint but they didn't manage to get a big advantage over the pack and they were caught before the first categorized climb of the day
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0004-36.png

On the first climb of the day we had some attacks from the pack, Sella being first at the top in front of Morizot and Levarlet, the Auber rider looking to be a real threat for Vital's polka dot jersey
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0005-26.png

On the downhill, Duran and Lund got away from the pack and what was looking to be the move for the breakaway of the day, but as soon as the road started to go up, Duran found himself alone in front
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0013-22.png

Duran was first at the top of the second climb of the day, with Lund hanging on for the second place, while with some more KoM points won, Morizot was in pole - position to win the mountains classification
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0018-20.png

On the next downhill, Lund was brought back in the pack and three other riders tried their luck: Fuglsang, Walker and Coppel. But they weren't able to stay in front of the pack for too long either
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0024-19.png

First at the top was again Duran, but now it was clear that Vital had lost the polka dot jersey to Morizot
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0025-13.png

Duran started the last climb of the day with an advantage of around one minute over the pack but it was clear that he won't be able to stay in front for too long
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0030-13.png

And his adventure ended 4 kilometers before the top of Col d'Eze, when the big names made their moves, lead by Efimkin, Gomez Marchante and Brajkovic
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0035-12.png

There were many attackers and many changes in front of the race during the last 4 kilometers of the climb but at the top, 4 riders were leading the race: Brajkovic, Rodriguez Oliver, Marzano and Gomez Marchante
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0040-4.png

Shleck was really strong in the final kilometers of the climb and he also managed to join the leading group, right after the summit
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0041-10.png

40 seconds behind, Gesink was leading the chasing group. Six more riders were there with him: Sella, Efimkin, Sinkewitz, Pluchin, Popovych and Pellizotti
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0047-10.png

Rodriguez Oliver won the intermediate downhill sprint in front of Schleck and Brajkovic, which gave us a first clue of who are the favorites for a sprint at the finish line
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0055-3.png

Sella and Gesink tried everything they could on the downhill and even though they got away from the other chasers they never managed to get any closer to the leading group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0061-5.png

With 5 kilometers to go, we had the same 5 leaders in front, Marzano, Brajkovic and Rodriguez Oliver even being a real threat for Sella's yellow jersey, who was at that moment 40 seconds behind the leading group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0066-4.png

There were no other moves in the leading group until the final kilometer, where Marzano was leading the sprint for the stage win in front of Brajkovic and Rodriguez Oliver
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0072-3.png

Marzano led the group for almost the entire kilometer but he cracked right before the finish and he lost the lead to Rodriguez Oliver, with Brajkovic and Schleck also looking now stronger than him
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0078-3.png

And Rodriguez Oliver wins the last stage of this year's Paris - Nice, which might gave him a chance to get a podium in the GC as well. Brajkovic took the second place, in front of Schleck, while Marzano hardly kept the 4th spot in the stage in front of Gomez Marchante
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0085-4.png

Gesink led Sella at the finish line, 39 seconds behind Rodriguez Oliver, but it looks like the Italian did more than enough to defend the yellow jersey and win the general classification
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0092-2.png

Popovych led the second chasing group, 58 seconds behind the leading group, but it doesn't look to good for him as it looks like he will lose his place on the GC podium
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0097-4.png

And Emanuele Sella is the winner of the 2011 edition of Paris - Nice!
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0105-1.png

There were some significant changes in the GC in this last stage, Popovych and Pluchkin finishing outside the top 5, Brajkovic and Rodriguez Oliver taking the next podium spots after Sella, in front of Marzano and Gomez Marchante. While Schleck, Gesink and Sinkewitz won some time back and won some positions in the GC as well to finish 11th, 12th and 17th
