The second stage in Paris – Nice is made for sprinters with only 2 insignificant climbs on the route. Van Stayen and the Sony Ericsson duo, with Meyer and Bazajev, are the main favorites to take the stage win today, with some other strong sprinters present here as well. The good news for Coppel is that no one of the sprinters is close enough to threaten his yellow jersey
At the first intermediate sprint the breakaway wasn’t still made with many riders trying to get away from the pack. 9th in the general classification, Rick Flens was first there in front of Gallego
After that 15 riders maintained in front of the pack in what was going to be the main breakaway of the day: Klostergaard, Sibilla, Txurruka, Pires, Nooytens, Portal, Pauriol, Walker, Flens, Gallego, Castro Rodriguez, Kaisen, Le Mevel, Li and Torres
In the pack, one of the big names was in trouble after a puncture. It was Robert Gesink, 2nd yesterday, but he was helped by 3 team – mates, including De Kort, 6th in the GC after the prologue and he was brought back in the pack
On the first climb of the, Txurruka attacked and he was first at the top of the climb in front of Pauriol and Walker
On the next climb he attacked again but he was only second between the two Energie Diesel riders, with Pires being first. Still that was enough for him to become the first King of the Mountains of Paris – Nice 2011
After Gesink, another GC favorite was in trouble. This time it was Alex Pluchkin but as Gesink he was brought back by 3 team – mates, one of them being Roman Kreuziger, 10th in the prologue
In the breakaway, Li won the last intermediate sprint of the day in front of Walker and Sibilla
The breakaway had a nice chance to survive today, with Le Mevel, the last survivor, being caught after the 5 kilometers banner. With the sprint approaching, the preparations started in the pack and with just 3 kilometers before the finish, Sieberg was leading the pack, but Van Stayen, the man he was working for wasn’t anywhere close to him. Behind him were made the big moves with Bernaudeau leading the Festina train for Sonnery, Kavsek in front of Renshaw in the Starbucks train, with Duque trying to keep it close, while Rodriguez was leading out Mondory
When the actual sprint started, Sieberg lost the lead to Renshaw, who made a great move from Kavsek’s wheel, with Sonnery and Duque right behind him
With the final kilometer approaching, Renshaw was still in the lead, but Haussler and Bazajev were coming very strong from behind
Inside the final kilometer, Renshaw wasn’t able to get away from his opponents, but the others weren’t able to get any close either
And Mark Renshaw wins the second stage of Paris – Nice, in front of Haussler and Duque. Coppel got a great third place today and he has no problems keeping the yellow jersey
