Paris - Nice - Stage 8
fenian_1234
Stage 8

This short stage should be fast - 131k and hardly a meter of it is flat. Bookies favorites are Pluchkin, Schleck and Gomez Marchante.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_01.jpg

The attacks start immediately, and for the first time this race the first group of riders to attack are let go.

Andre Steensen of Team B+O is first thru' the intermediate checkpoint. Behind him Maaskant, Dowsett, Agnoli, Sokolov and Deroo are trying to bridge up to him.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_02.jpg

They just about have him caught as the first KOM point is passed. The pack are already nearly 3 minutes back.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_03.jpg

Le Mevel, Facci and Ingels back in the pack decide the time is right to try their luck. Rabobank with a little help from Eurosport are unconcerned at the head of the peloton.

Le Mevel could be a threat for the KOM jersey's today, if he can take close to the maximum remaining points. He's a man on a mission and Ingels cannot stay with his two companions.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_04.jpg

Just over 2k from the summit, Le Mevel and Facci make it up to the break. Le Mevel unfortunately is too tired from his efforts to sprint for the 10 KOM points on offer. No one can now take the mountains jersey from Mehr-Wenige.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_05.jpg

The pack come over this summit around six and a half minutes down. There are 77k left to race and just two more peaks on which to make a difference and take the yellow jersey from Gesink.

The pack builds up speed on the descent and there's a crash. It's Pecharroman, placed 16th at 3'46. Philips send men back to help him, but with the pace building he never does manage to regain contact and slides way down the GC at the end of the day.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_06.jpg

As usual, it is Accumulux, Unicef and Rabobank who lead the peloton in the chase of the escapees. The gap is falling and with 50k to go, at the foot of the second last climb, it is just over 5 minutes.

Iglinsky, so often the strongman at the front in this race is surprisingly spotted right at the back of the peloton.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_07.jpg

The break make it over the top with over 2 minutes of their lead in place. Back in the group, with 1k still to go to the summit, Pluchkin is the first of the big guns to test the water with an attack.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_08.jpg

Closer to the summit, Gomez Marchante decides that he may try and follow him up the road.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_09.jpg

The legs of the guys leading the pack are still strong and he decides not to persist. Perez Sanchez who briefly thinks of following Marchante decides to do the same. Pluchkin though has a gap and is descending at speed.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_10.jpg

Pluchkin holds his lead on the long descent and at the foot of the final climb he has a minute on the pack. Ahead of him, the remants of the break have around a minute still. It's still Rabobank at the front, with the main assistance coming from Unicef.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_12.jpg

Pluchkin is still a minute up the road, Gesink just 20k away from overall victory and the summit just 5k away when Frank Schleck makes what might be his final attack of the race.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_13.jpg

Popovych is first to react as Rabobank continue to drive things along.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_14.jpg

Schleck is quickly up to and past Pluchkin. Popovych looks as if he may be able to hold onto Schleck's wheel. Back in the pack, it is Ardila's turn to try and jump away.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_15.jpg

Popo gets himself on to Schleck's wheel. Schleck though looks determined to shake him and attacks again.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_16.jpg

Gesink can wait no longer and he finally makes a move to close the gap.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_17.jpg

On the 8% gradients close to the top of the climb, Frank Schleck sweeps the last of the break up and hits the front.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_18.jpg

Today he has done enough to open up a gap going over the summit. If the race finished right now he would probably be the winner. But, there are still roughly 15k to go to the finish. Can he do it?

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_19.jpg

9k to the finish and Gesink leads the chase. Serpa is there again, as are Plaza and Gomez Marchante. There is no sign of Popovych.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_20.jpg

Frank is holding them off. Inside the final 5k and he is a minute clear with the finish line and the yellow jersey firmly in his sights. Only an absolute disaster can stop him now.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_21.jpg

One kilometer now and the celebrations, for Accumulux at least, can soon begin.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/pn_08_22.jpg

Frank Schleck has won this year's Paris-Nice, and what a way for him to do it.

Good news for the British Airways team - they comfortably beat the Control Team, though still come in nearly an hour behind the next worst team.
