Stage 7
With today classified hilly and tommorrow mountainous, it is a big day for Frank Schleck. A hilly stage perfect for his abilities - the question is whether he will finally manage to make a difference or will the race favorites continue to cancel each other out?
The race starts almost at the bottom of a short, sharp climb. First one up is American Suzuki's Solokov.
It all comes back together down the other side. This is just another invitation for attacks though and after some fast and furious racing a group of six manage to make the break of the day.
They are Berthou, Mestre, Van Impe, Gautier, Mehr-Wenige and Maisto. Behind them Ortega and Mahoric work hard together but never quite manage to bridge across the gap.
In the break Mehr-Wenige is the only one who makes any effort to take the mountain points. With Rabobank setting the pace back in the pack, he rides himself into the KOM jersey as the stage progresses.
With 100k to go, there is 9'09 back to the pack. At 80k with Accumulux and Unicef having joined the chase it is down to 6'42. 74k and it's 5'42. Today, it looks as if the favorites want to fight it out for the stage win.
On the days biggest climb, Siutsou, Eltink, Rodrigues and Lovkvist launch attacks.
Over the top they have a gap of around 30 seconds to the pack, but Eltink is struggling to hold on. In front of them the original escapees still have a couple of minutes. Schleck and Popovych hold their fire.
The Lovkvist group hold off the pack on the downhill to the day's final climb and the lead of the original escapees is down to 1'30 as the short, sharp final climb begins.
2.5k from the summit, Gesink is the one who surprisingly puts in the first dig. His rivals are slow to react.
But come they do. Popovych in the green and Schleck in the Polka Dot.
The original escapees - minus Mehr-Wenige and Van Impe - are first over the top, but right behind them is Gesink.
And a still charging Frank Schleck!
Once again, Schleck is unable to hold his lead and push on to the finish. There are 15 k to the finish. Goutier, Maisto, Berthou and Mestre are out front. 32" back are a group of seven - Gesink, Popovych, Ardila, Schleck, Abal, Paulinho and Van Impe. Behind them another 20 or so seconds back are a small group containing Plaza and Gomez Marchante.
The lead group is caught and the Plaza/Gomez Marchante group manages to regain contact with the yellow jersey group. There are just over 10k to go and it looks as today will be all about bonus seconds now in the battle for the overall.
The big guns all take a turn up front driving this elite group along. 5k to go and Perez Sanchez is on the front. Popovych on his wheel. A small gap looks to be opening.
4k and Popovych is now in front. Gesink, Plaza, Schleck and Marchante do not look to have picked particulary good wheels in following Gautier, a survivor from the original break.
2k to go and it's Serpa opening up the sprint. Perez Sanchez on his wheel and Popovych perphaps caught napping.
700 meters out and it's still Serpa. Perez Sanchez trying to come around. Popovych too, still in with a chance. The rest of the GC contenders have royally screwed things up following Gautier though. In fact, Gesink is still stuck behind him....
Serpa looks determined to make amends for his near miss of a couple of days ago. Into the last couple of hundred meters and it's going to be awfully close between him and Perez Sanchez.
The Spaniard has it on the line!
So, just one stage to go now. It's classified as a moutain stage, but the way things are going and the finish the way it is - would anyone bet against Gesink losing this?

Mountain
A great ride from Dietmar Mehr-Wenige today to claim the Mountains jersey. There are still plenty of points on offer in the final stage, so he's not home and dry yet.
