Stage 6

After the difficulties of yesterday, we have a 172k flat stage. Favorites according to the bookies are Davis, Serebriakov and Vanderbiest - but the chances of another break making it have to be fairly high.

As Mugerli leads Pineau and Geslin over the first KOM sprint it looks like the break of the day may well have formed.

There are seven riders present - Geslin from Festina, Kern and Lund from Phillips, Steensen from B+O, Pineau from Wikipedia, and finally Mugerli and Tiralongo from La Gazzetta.

It seems they are focused on stage glory and don't bother contesting the next intermediate sprint. Maybe Gesink will get to enjoy a quiet day in the yellow jersey?

It certainly looks that way. 100k to go and the lead is at 6'06. Pineau and Mugerli take the KOM sprints and with the final one past it is now mostly downhill to the finish. 80k to go with Rabobank still on the front the lead is up to 8'34.

The sprinters teams finally wake up and with Sic, Virgin and Suzuki on the front it is game on for the chase.

70k the gap is coming down - it's 7'45. 50k to go and it's 5'54. 40k and it's clear the sprinters teams are struggling to bring the escape back in. The gap is 5'17. They sit up and once again it's up to Rabobank to hit the front.

30k is left and the gap has gone back up. 5'47 now and someone from the break is going to take stage glory today. Pineau is the best placed guy in the break, 6'59 back, so the yellow jersey is probably not in any danger here.

With 15k to go, no one in the break bothers sprinting for the points on offer at the intermediate sprint. Steensen leads them through, and almost immediately Lund decides the time is right to break away.

Pineau hits the front and puts in a big turn to bring him back. But no sooner is he caught, than he's off again. Meanwhile, things look over for Mugerli and Tiralongo, the Gazzetta pair.

Lund has Steensen on his wheel and has failed to shake him. Going over the last little rise before the finish, Steensen goes past him. Pineau again is the man trying to close the gap, and at least one of the Gazzetta pair have managed to somehow get back on.

10k to go for Steensen. Lund is behind and a group of 4 chase.

Just under 7k to go and the game looks up for Festina man Geslin. The gap to the front two is being closed as well.

3.5k to go and Lund has been caught and is now struggling to hold on. Steensen still has a small gap and Pineau is still on the front driving away.

Under the 1k to go banner and we have a 4, perhaps 5 man sprint.

600 meters to go and it's Pineau on the front. Behind him Mugerli is trying to come around.

But Pineau is just too strong today and takes a well deserved stage win ahead of Mugerli and Kern.
