PN Stage 3

There are King of the Mountains points up for grabs today, but far more importantly, today is a chance for the likes of Schleck, Gesink and Pluchkin to fire the first real shots in the battle for the overall.

The weather has once again turned for the worse and the riders are met with grey skies and heavy rain at the start. This will be a stage for a strongman.

The rain doesn't discourage a flurry of attacks as the race starts. The pack are not in any mood to let anything go, and it is Team B+O who do most of the work in pulling back the riders who have set off up the road. Finally though the chasers lose steam and the attackers would look to be away.

It is Phillips rider Le Mevel at the head of the escape and a big group eventually forms around him. There is Geslin, Eibegger, Mahoric, Mugerli, Knees, Gautier, Maaskant, Vaugrenard, Fertonani, Florencio, and Mironov all fancying their chances from the break today.

There is a little drama at the pack of the pack as first Ardila, then Gerdemenn puncture - but with helpers they are both nursed back into the pack.

The first intermediate sprint is taken by Festina man Geslin, followed closely by Vaugrenard and Mugerli. The gap back to the pack grows steadily and with 100k to go it is at just under six minutes. With the hills rapidly approaching, Vaugrenard this time outsprints Geslin for the second of the day's sprint points. Eibegger has to settle for third.

Back in the pack it is Frank Schleck's team, along with Rabobank who are doing a lot of the work to keep things close. 65k to go though and the escapees working well together still have over 4 minutes.

Maaskant and Le Mevel jump for the first KOM points and it is the Phillips rider who is the stronger. Vaugrenard is 3rd. Le Mevel repeats the feat again with the second set of KOM points on offer. There are around 35k to to go and the gap is still around 3 minutes.

As the pack go thru' the KOM sprint, Francisco Perez Sanchez of Lipton decides now is the moment to make his move. Gerdemenn tries to follow but doesn't have the legs. It is a well timed move and Perez Sanchez quickly opens a gap to the pack.

Back up front Maaskant it is this time who takes the KOM points. Vaugrenaard is second, and in 3rd it looks as if Le Mevel has done enough to take the jersey today.

A kilometer or so back down the road, Frank Schleck explodes into life and makes what he hopes will be a decisive move. Claeys, Gesink, Barredo, Popovych, and De La Fuente are the ones to react.

Schleck is fearless on the descent and quickly sweeps past Perez Sanchez. Then he crashes into a ditch.

No, he doesn't really. Pfft

Scheck seems stronger than the guys who tried to match him and at the bottom of the descent he has opened a gap back to the pack, who are closing in quickly on the Gesink group. Perez Sanchez has managed to hold his wheel and the final, most difficult climb of the day is about to begin.

Back up front though, the escapees still have a gap of over a minute. Le Mevel has the legs once again to attack on the climb.

On to the climb and Perez Sanchez is struggling to hold onto Frank Schleck's wheel. Up front Mevel is riding away from the break and is heading into the KOM jersey with a flourish. There are attacks galore and somehow somehow the others manage to close the gap on Schleck.

Over the top Le Mevel has a lead of about a minute. Frank Schleck is second over - but he is dragging a big group with him. Ardila, Gesink, Barredo, Perez Sanchez, Popovych are the big names who have managed to get themselves on to the back of the remants of the break of the day group. A group Frank Schleck is leading. Behind them, Plaza and Gomez Marchante are two key riders who look as if they've blown it today. Further behind somewhere is Pluchkin.

Schleck tries to shake them off on the descent but they're going nowhere on this kind of terrain. Instead, at the bottom, Le Mevel's lead has gone out to nearly a minute and a half and he now has 10k to go to what would be a glorious victory.

5k to go and the gap is coming down. Le Mevel is still riding strongly, but the wolves back in the Schleck group smell blood and are coming after him.

2k to go and he is hanging on for grim death.

Barredo is at the head of the marauding chasers as they try to snatch the victory away from Le Mevel.

500 meters to go and Le Mevel can taste it. He's going to hold on and even has time to punch the air in delight as he goes over the line. What a ride!
