Stage 1

Favorites for today's stage are Cancellara, Gesink and Pluchkin, though guys like Plaza, Millar, Stannard and Popovych will be looking to steal the stage win.

And we're off at the Race to the Sun. First to go under grey skies and pouring rain is Thomas Lövkvist.

He puts in a decent enough time but it is doesn't stand for very long as Konovalovas (LCL), Rodriguez (SIC) and Amador (WBR) all go faster. Bouet (B+O) brings the time down still further and it can't be long before a rider breaks the 7 minute barrier, can it?

The time is a good one though and it stands through a number of close calls until Ivars (WIK) comes home in exactly 7 minutes. The rain and the French fans driving him on.

Stannard (VIR) is the first to go under 7 minutes - this time, only the rain driving the British rider on.

Back at the start, team mate and GC hope Ruben Plaza is tranquil.

He goes full gas and at the line, it looks as if Plaza is one rider who thrives in the rain. He is three seconds faster than Stannard and the new mark is 6"53.

Plaza's time withstands everything David Millar has to give.

Into the final kilometer and one of the stage favorites, Taylor Phinney is giving it his all.

He is not good enough though and is fractionally slower than both Plaza and Millar. Robert Gesink is the next of the big guns out on the course.

It looks like the Dutchman and his bike handling skills are not at the best in the rain though. At the line he is fourth.

It would now seem only Cancellara, Pluchkin and perhaps Popovych are riders who might be able to better Plaza's time. Cancellara is on the course and is powering his way to the finish.

The Big Swiss shows his class against the clock and comfortably beats Ruben Plaza's time. We have a new leader.

There are only two riders now capable of snatching the stage from Cancellara. At the start, Pluchkin knows exactly what is required of him. As a favorite for the overall too, he has a chance to show his rivals exactly what kind of form he is in.

There is no let up in the rain and it is just him against the clock.

He seems to ride within himself though and take it carefully in the rain. A Top 5 for Pluchkin and a sign of weakness perhaps?

Last to go on the day is Jaroslav Popovych but in a slightly lacklustre ride he fails even to break into the Top 20.

Looking down the stage classification, not one of the main contenders has lost time that can't be regained in this race.
