Stage 5 brings a break from the flat stages, with a 10 kilometre individual time-trial giving the rouleurs that have made the trip Down Under the chance to take away a stage, as well as moving up the overall standings. How far though is unknown, with some of the sprinters having big 40" advantages.
Only two riders have been given a chance today of victory - Rogers and Zabriskie are two titans of this discipline and we would have to see something abnormal for one of those to not win today.
A couple of decent times are set early on, but nothing that will stand the test of time. The first real time to be set is by Izagirre, who beats the best early time set by Coquard by 16", with a time of 13'06".
The Spaniard remains on top as we reach the riders 40" down on the overall. The first of these of note is Van Winden, who looks set to become the new leader after a fast first half of the course.
Starting a couple of minutes later is American TT champion Zabriskie in his stars and stripes. Every second counts for him as he faces a battle with Rogers and the sprinters for the GC today.
Van Winden arrives first, with the Dutchman setting a new best time of 12'43", a very impressive 26" up on Izagirre.
Then finishing his effort is Zabriskie, who as expected obliterates all the times, finishing in 12'27" which is an extremely quick time, 16" up on teammate Van Winden. He's set the bar very high it seems.
Probably the only man capable of troubling that time is Rogers, who rolls down the ramp to start his effort now.
The mighty Aussie's legs must be burning as he crosses the line, in a time of... 12'26"!
That means Rogers beats Zabriskie by a single second, moving him into the lead. Surely the stage win is his now, maybe a vital one for Oz in their relegation battle.
The final big time-trialist to set a time is Dempster, who rides a good tempo throughout. He slots into fourth at the finish, finishing 22" down on leader Rogers.
That means with the riders with bonus seconds still to come, the standings look like this:
The first of those that could retain a good GC position today is Rasmussen, who held an 8" advantage on the big time-trialists going into today (9th @ 32" ).
His time is 13'09", 43" down on the fastest time today. That means he's easily overtaken in the GC by the four big TT'ers here, slotting in in provisional 9th place for the stage, and 5th in the overall.
Another sprinter that can also time-trial decently is Dall'Antonia. He has a slightly bigger advantage, but still only has 12" on the rouleurs (5th @ 28" ).
The time he sets is 13'13", 47" down. That's good enough to put him into 5th overall provisionally ahead of Rasmussen on countback, a great result for Continental Team Mobil.
4th overall Davis is next to set a time. He has a bit more of a buffer (26" ) but that probably isn't enough to retain his high GC position just 14" down on yellow.
That proves to be true, with the Aussie ending up 1'35" down, dropping completely out of overall contention. A poor effort from him.
Finally we reach the overall podium. Do any of these have what it takes to overtake Rogers, Zabriskie and Co? We'll have to see, as so far the big time-triallers have been able to overturn the sprinters' advantages.
Napolitano is first up, and the big Italian definitely isn't a specialist at this discipline. He stops the clock on a relatively mediocre 13'42". His bonus seconds do however lift him to 12th overall and with some more bonuses on offer tomorrow, all is not lost.
Meanwhile, both Cavendish
and Haussler are out on course, and both have full 40" advantages. Can either take advantage? Or will Rogers take yellow?
Cavendish is the first to finish. As he crosses the line, he looks up. His time is a very decent 13'11", which puts him in 10th on the day, but unfortunately for him that leaves him 45" down on Rogers! The Aussie remains in provisional yellow!
Final rider in is Haussler. He hasn't got the same reputation for time-trialling as Cavendish, and finishes eventually on a time of 13'47". He loses 1'21" to Rogers. His jersey is gone!
All that means that Rogers claims yellow after a stellar ride today! Zabriskie came off second best but that remains good enough to move him onto the overall podium. A worry for those two will be Cavendish, who after a good performance today lies just 5" down on the GC. If he claims a podium tomorrow the race will be his!
The only other change in the classifications today was that Ford moves into the lead in the U25 competition.
