Herald Sun Tour - Stage 4
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Herald4_zps093682fa.jpg

Stage 4 brings guess what? Another flat stage, which is great for the big sprinters. Despite not taking a stage yet, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano remains among the big favourites, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish and yesterday's winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis also being mentioned.

No attacks are let go in the early stages, with an intermediate sprint within the first few kilometres. The sprinters fight out the bonuses and points, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guardini.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_45_zpse142e804.jpg

After this the attacks begin, but nothing is established as we reach the first King of the Mountains sprint, a Cat.3 climb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans leads over the top, adding to his King of the Mountains total. Here's an update on the standings:

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_46_zps50cef47d.jpg

He makes the decisive move that creates the breakaway today, along with six others: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png La Lavandier, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Hugentobler, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Di Gregorio, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Veyt, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Hnik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Masuda. Some familiar names from earlier stages there.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_48_zpsf2113925.jpg

They soon reach the second Mountain sprint of the day. Being a Cat.1 climb, it could be crucial in the direction of the competition. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans manages to comfortably take it ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Hugentobler and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png La Lavandier, meaning he moves into the competition lead!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_49_zpsa889ab70.jpg

The break then comes across an intermediate sprint, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Veyt beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Hnik to the points.

Meanwhile the peloton, driven by AirBaltic, then continuously closes the gap over the day, with 50 kilometres to go bringing the gap down to below 3 and a half minutes, with the break's chances of staying away nearing zero now.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_51_zps94224fc2.jpg

They were easily caught in the end, meaning once again it's sprint time! Hollister and Evian set up trains today, with the layout being:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Dempsteri439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Manarelli

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Awangi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Park
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayevi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Kupfernagel

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_52_zpsd0efa3c8.jpg

In the next few hundred metres the Evian train pulls into the lead, something that has happened on a few occasions here. It hasn't translated into any wins though so far.

Nevertheless, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano has to be favourite from here due to his advanced position. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler is also positioned well, in the Italian's wheel.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_53_zps15b38576.jpg

With 1500 metres left to race, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Sonnery is giving a great leadout for his leader, ready to launch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano into the lead. None of the other favourites have gone so far except i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis, who was forced to go after his train failed. He's in fourth as a sharp left turn is taken.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_54_zps8ed8c0d4.jpg

Into the final kilometre, most of the big sprinters have started their sprint, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano among those still waiting. Wait too long though and his chance could be gone! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler is moving through on his left, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guardini look poised to make big accelerations.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_55_zps3e600af0.jpg

By the time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano is launched, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler has already flown past! It'll be tough to catch him!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_56_zpsad56add2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler remains in the lead moving into the final couple of hundred metres. It looks like he will take his second stage of the race!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_57_zpsedb3afee.jpg

He does! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler raises his arms as he takes stage four, making himself the first sprinter to take two wins here Down Under. That victory also crucially puts him back into the leaders jersey on countback ahead of tomorrows ITT.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_58_zpsaba129d0.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano came very close in the end but has to settle for second again today. A consolation for him is that he moves onto the provisional overall podium, but he must be disappointed. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev completes the podium after a close finish for the final podium place.

Centimetres behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Feillu both grab top fives after just missing out on a podium finish. They won't be too disappointed though, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Feillu had to sprint from quite far back while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis had to go from a long way out.
