Stage 4 brings guess what? Another flat stage, which is great for the big sprinters. Despite not taking a stage yet, Napolitano remains among the big favourites, with Cavendish and yesterday's winner Davis also being mentioned.
No attacks are let go in the early stages, with an intermediate sprint within the first few kilometres. The sprinters fight out the bonuses and points, with Davis ahead of Napolitano and Guardini.
After this the attacks begin, but nothing is established as we reach the first King of the Mountains sprint, a Cat.3 climb. Gerrans leads over the top, adding to his King of the Mountains total. Here's an update on the standings:
1 Zingle26 2 Selander20 3 Gerrans16
He makes the decisive move that creates the breakaway today, along with six others: La Lavandier, Hugentobler, Di Gregorio, Veyt, Hnik and Masuda. Some familiar names from earlier stages there.
They soon reach the second Mountain sprint of the day. Being a Cat.1 climb, it could be crucial in the direction of the competition. Gerrans manages to comfortably take it ahead of Hugentobler and La Lavandier, meaning he moves into the competition lead!
1 Gerrans32 2 Zingle26 3 Selander20
The break then comes across an intermediate sprint, with Veyt beating Gerrans and Hnik to the points.
Meanwhile the peloton, driven by AirBaltic, then continuously closes the gap over the day, with 50 kilometres to go bringing the gap down to below 3 and a half minutes, with the break's chances of staying away nearing zero now.
They were easily caught in the end, meaning once again it's sprint time! Hollister and Evian set up trains today, with the layout being:
Dempster Manarelli Nizzolo Sonnery Davis Napolitano Cavendish Haussler Awang Park Bazayev Kupfernagel
In the next few hundred metres the Evian train pulls into the lead, something that has happened on a few occasions here. It hasn't translated into any wins though so far.
Nevertheless, Napolitano has to be favourite from here due to his advanced position. Haussler is also positioned well, in the Italian's wheel.
With 1500 metres left to race, Sonnery is giving a great leadout for his leader, ready to launch Napolitano into the lead. None of the other favourites have gone so far except Davis, who was forced to go after his train failed. He's in fourth as a sharp left turn is taken.
Into the final kilometre, most of the big sprinters have started their sprint, with Napolitano among those still waiting. Wait too long though and his chance could be gone! Haussler is moving through on his left, while Bazayev and Guardini look poised to make big accelerations.
By the time Napolitano is launched, Haussler has already flown past! It'll be tough to catch him!
Haussler remains in the lead moving into the final couple of hundred metres. It looks like he will take his second stage of the race!
He does! Haussler raises his arms as he takes stage four, making himself the first sprinter to take two wins here Down Under. That victory also crucially puts him back into the leaders jersey on countback ahead of tomorrows ITT.
Napolitano came very close in the end but has to settle for second again today. A consolation for him is that he moves onto the provisional overall podium, but he must be disappointed. Bazayev completes the podium after a close finish for the final podium place.
Centimetres behind, Davis and Feillu both grab top fives after just missing out on a podium finish. They won't be too disappointed though, as Feillu had to sprint from quite far back while Davis had to go from a long way out.
