Herald Sun Tour - Stage 3
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Herald3_zps8ae71ae1.jpg

Another stage here in Australia, another flat day for the peloton. 160 kilometres separate the start and finish today, the longest of the race, and there are also a few hills to negotiate. Sprinters i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano, race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri are of course still the overwhelming favourites though.

Almost straight away a four-man breakaway goes up the road. Today's early attackers are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.png Hassink, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Zingle, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png Barclay and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_23_zps8df2c8c7.jpg

They quickly reach the first two sprints of the day, both intermediates. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander takes the first (below) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png Barclay the second.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_24_zps10d61b85.jpg

As the peloton hits the first of two major climbs the sprinters show no signs of weak legs - AirBaltic keep on pushing up the climb with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish comfortable.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_25_zpsd6f17179.jpg

At the front, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Zingle just beats i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander to the top of the climb in a close finish. That moves the Belgian into the King of the Mountains lead with a Cat.2 climb still to come. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.png Hassink is third a bit further back.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_26_zpseeb088f0.jpg

That climb does spark an attack from the peloton though, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Stoltz jumping out of the peloton and setting off in pursuit of the breakaway.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_27_zps0991d10a.jpg

Upon reaching the second climb, the Amex rider is well over halfway across the now two minute gap. At the mountain sprint, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Zingle and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander manage to create a gap to the other two who look to be tiring. The Belgian once again takes the sprint, consolidating his lead in the competition.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_28_zps35978866.jpg

Those two continue together over the top and into the final 20 kilometres. Their gap surprisingly still stands at two minutes, and is growing! This is because on the final climb some damage was done to the peloton...

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_30_zps4dce53e1.jpg

As said, several riders have disappeared off the back of the peloton due to the high pace on the climb, including both Amex leaders i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Kupfernagel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Eisel, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Mezgec and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Vesely. With the gap at over a minute now, it could mean their chances here are over!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_36_zpsedd4667e.jpg

The front of the peloton is depleted after the climb as well, with only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Van Wyk left to help i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish close down the remnants of the break, further benefiting the attackers!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_31_zps81fc2026.jpg

Finally Vespa manage to scramble together a chase and they have started to close down the gap with 10 kilometres left. It still stands at 1'35" though, so they need to get a move on!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_33_zpsd4aad742.jpg

Up at the front, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Stoltz is chasing down i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Zingle and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander after dropping i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/anc_zps34cc1374.png Barclay and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.png Hassink. The gap is always coming down steadily, but also is the distance left to the finish. It's going to be close!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_34_zpsf6cae7b6.jpg

Under the 5 kilometres to go flag the Luxembourgian makes contact, making it a group of three of the front. The gap is now at 45"...

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_35_zpsb56969a4.jpg

Behind the peloton it is now clear the dropped group won't make it back today, with the gap not coming down. That's unfortunate for those involved, putting any GC hopes to bed.

Vespa are the only team to attempt a leadout train behind, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Garbelli leading out i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri heading into Apollo Bay. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev is well-positioned in the Italian's wheel, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano are all well poised.

As you can see the gap is getting very small - the chances of a bunch sprint deciding the win have drastically increased it seems.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_37_zpsd0aa17ab.jpg

The front trio of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Selander, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Zingle and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Stoltz has now slowed in anticipation of the sprint, but they really need to get a move on to avoid the snapping jaws of the sprinters.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_38_zps1d3b8153.jpg

They wait too long though, and are caught as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Garbelli opens up the sprint!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_39_zps1ae0444a.jpg

None of the sprinters are showing their cards early on today, with the flammge rouge approaching no-one has started their final kick. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri remains well-positioned, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Makino and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis all there or thereabouts at the front.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_40_zpse3026eae.jpg

Under the kite they all go! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev moves into an early lead after deciding to go first, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis to his right.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_41_zps4b3d99c4.jpg

With 700 metres left, the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis pulls into the lead with great speed! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Dall'Antonia is also coming fast, benefiting from his slipstream.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_42_zpscb810928.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Dall'Antonia moves into second, as the line nears, and the others can't respond. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis looks like he has the stage wrapped up meanwhile, three bike lengths ahead.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_43_zps3fcbb2c7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis indeed wins! A performance deserved of victory, he clearly had the strongest legs today, winning in the most comfortable fashion we've seen here in Australia so far.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_44_zpsc348364c.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mcc_zpse0e8a92e.png Dall'Antonia manages to take a good 2nd place for Mobil, which gives them something to cheer about after a poor race so far. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish meanwhile extends his GC lead to 20" after finishing 3rd. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Makino and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler round off the top five after fast finishes.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.png Eisel leads home the dropped group of riders, 1'35" down. Not a good day him, or any of the leaders involved. At least they could finish the stage unlike poor i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Petit.
