Another stage here in Australia, another flat day for the peloton. 160 kilometres separate the start and finish today, the longest of the race, and there are also a few hills to negotiate. Sprinters Napolitano, race leader Cavendish and Guarnieri are of course still the overwhelming favourites though.
Almost straight away a four-man breakaway goes up the road. Today's early attackers are Hassink, Zingle, Barclay and Selander.
They quickly reach the first two sprints of the day, both intermediates. Selander takes the first (below) and Barclay the second.
1 2 3 IS 1 Selander Hassink BarclayIS 2 Barclay Selander Zingle
As the peloton hits the first of two major climbs the sprinters show no signs of weak legs - AirBaltic keep on pushing up the climb with Cavendish comfortable.
At the front, Zingle just beats Selander to the top of the climb in a close finish. That moves the Belgian into the King of the Mountains lead with a Cat.2 climb still to come. Hassink is third a bit further back.
That climb does spark an attack from the peloton though, with Stoltz jumping out of the peloton and setting off in pursuit of the breakaway.
Upon reaching the second climb, the Amex rider is well over halfway across the now two minute gap. At the mountain sprint, Zingle and Selander manage to create a gap to the other two who look to be tiring. The Belgian once again takes the sprint, consolidating his lead in the competition.
Those two continue together over the top and into the final 20 kilometres. Their gap surprisingly still stands at two minutes, and is growing! This is because on the final climb some damage was done to the peloton...
As said, several riders have disappeared off the back of the peloton due to the high pace on the climb, including both Amex leaders Kupfernagel and Eisel, Mezgec and Vesely. With the gap at over a minute now, it could mean their chances here are over!
The front of the peloton is depleted after the climb as well, with only Van Wyk left to help Cavendish close down the remnants of the break, further benefiting the attackers!
Finally Vespa manage to scramble together a chase and they have started to close down the gap with 10 kilometres left. It still stands at 1'35" though, so they need to get a move on!
Up at the front, Stoltz is chasing down Zingle and Selander after dropping Barclay and Hassink. The gap is always coming down steadily, but also is the distance left to the finish. It's going to be close!
Under the 5 kilometres to go flag the Luxembourgian makes contact, making it a group of three of the front. The gap is now at 45"...
Behind the peloton it is now clear the dropped group won't make it back today, with the gap not coming down. That's unfortunate for those involved, putting any GC hopes to bed.
Vespa are the only team to attempt a leadout train behind, with Garbelli leading out Guarnieri heading into Apollo Bay. Bazayev is well-positioned in the Italian's wheel, while Cavendish, Haussler and Napolitano are all well poised.
As you can see the gap is getting very small - the chances of a bunch sprint deciding the win have drastically increased it seems.
The front trio of Selander, Zingle and Stoltz has now slowed in anticipation of the sprint, but they really need to get a move on to avoid the snapping jaws of the sprinters.
They wait too long though, and are caught as Garbelli opens up the sprint!
None of the sprinters are showing their cards early on today, with the flammge rouge approaching no-one has started their final kick. Guarnieri remains well-positioned, with Bazayev, Cavendish, Makino and Davis all there or thereabouts at the front.
Under the kite they all go! Bazayev moves into an early lead after deciding to go first, with Guarnieri, Cavendish and Davis to his right.
With 700 metres left, the Davis pulls into the lead with great speed! Dall'Antonia is also coming fast, benefiting from his slipstream.
Dall'Antonia moves into second, as the line nears, and the others can't respond. Davis looks like he has the stage wrapped up meanwhile, three bike lengths ahead.
Davis indeed wins! A performance deserved of victory, he clearly had the strongest legs today, winning in the most comfortable fashion we've seen here in Australia so far.
Dall'Antonia manages to take a good 2nd place for Mobil, which gives them something to cheer about after a poor race so far. Cavendish meanwhile extends his GC lead to 20" after finishing 3rd. Makino and Haussler round off the top five after fast finishes.
Eisel leads home the dropped group of riders, 1'35" down. Not a good day him, or any of the leaders involved. At least they could finish the stage unlike poor Petit.
