Herald Sun Tour - Stage 2
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Herald2_zps7352bda0.jpg

Just like yesterday's stage, stage 2 is a flat one. 140 kilometres separate the start and finish between Colac and Warrnambool. Anything except a bunch sprint deciding the victory would be a huge surprise. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish are once again favourites, with yesterday's winner i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler also given a few mentions pre-stage.

Quickly a group of three goes up the road as the stage begins. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Nashitani and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png La Lavandier are the early attackers.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSC_11_zps79e028b6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.png Zhupa then joins them to make it a quartet up the road. These four make up the days breakaway.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_12_zpsc3ca08e3.jpg

The break passes four sprints along the way today, with the highlight being i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans' jump to take the first mountain sprint (seen below). It wasn't enough to overtake King of the Mountains leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gate though, who remains in polka-dots.

Some good chasing from the sprinters' teams Sram, Evian and AirBaltic closes the gap relatively easily though, eventually making the catch with 15 kilometres to go. Another bunch sprint awaits, surely.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_14_zps31c0aab9.jpg

That is indeed the case, with Vespa and Evian setting up trains today. With 4 kilometres left, AirBaltic could yet set up one as well with three riders near the front. The situation:

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_15_zps99bc01b0.jpg

AirBaltic do indeed form a train, but Evian pull ahead of their and Vespa's train while this is happening. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri may have to settle for someone's wheel. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Rasmussen now sits well-positioned in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano's wheel.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_16_zpsdb3f3612.jpg

With 1500m metres left, the leadouts are battling to get their man in pole position with Evian unable to shake off the other two trains. They still have a slight advantage though. None of the leaders has decided to go just yet.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_17_zps1bb4d15c.jpg

The situation is almost identical moving into the final kilometre. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Maranelli has moved i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Rasmussen clearly ahead of the others though, while yellow jersey i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler has had to launch his sprint from far out due to bad positioning.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_18_zpsf17dace3.jpg

300 metres later, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Guarnieri have gone on the right of the road but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano is still waiting! Dangerous tactics from the Italian, as if he waits too long he may get caught out.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_19_zps059f6e3e.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Rasmussen launch their sprints with a meagre 400 metres left, which could be costly as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish is flying on the left!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_20_zps62bba0d0.jpg

We can't quite see the end of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish's wheel at the finish, so we need a photo finish after a mightily close final few metres against i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano. Who takes stage 2?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_21_zpscb7cd817.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Cavendish! The Brit took advantage of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Napolitano waiting too long to take the victory along with it the leaders' jersey. The Italian rider couldn't get up to a high enough speed to hold off the Manx missile and has to settle for 2nd.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/HeraldSc_22_zps20a865a9.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Rasmussen takes the final podium place, a good finish for home team Oz which gives him some bonus seconds which could help him to a high overall finish. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png Bazayev gets 4th after a fast finish, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Haussler eventually takes 5th, not enough to retain his yellow jersey.
