Welcome to coverage of the first stage of the 2014 Herald Sun Tour. Stage 1 is a 150 kilometre flat stage held around Ballarat, so expect nothing but a bunch sprint. The pre-stage favourites are Cavendish, Napolitano and Davis.
As the stage begins in sunny Victoria, a four-man breakaway is soon up the road. It contains Huntegobler, Gate, Hnik and Di Gregorio.
At the first intermediate sprint, Hnik comes out on top. The rest of the results are below. Gate will wear the polka-dots tomorrow.
1 2 3 IS 1 Hnik Gate Di GregorioMS 1 Gate Huntegobler Di GregorioMS 2 Gate Di Gregorio HuntegoblerIS 2 Di Gregorio Huntegobler Gate
Soon that move is inevitably swept up though, leaving the stage set to finish in a bunch sprint as expected. Evian, Hollister and AirBaltic contribute to the pacemaking as he race nears its climax.
Three trains are made in the end, with the Evian train sitting behind the Hollister effort on the left and AirBaltic to their right. The riders are set up as follows:
Guarnieri Napolitano Sonnery Manarelli Davis Dempster Bazayev Haussler Sutton Cavendish Briggs Oliphant Peeters
From that point AirBaltic take control, with Oliphant moving them and leader Cavendish into pole position. Behind, with 2500 metres to go, the sprint has started. Of the big sprinters, Davis and Peeters have been forced to kick early.
Davis and Peeters then put in massive efforts and put the AirBaltic train in trouble, moving into the lead. Evian profits from these two's slipstream, with Sonnery now leading Napolitano out.
Moving under the kite, Napolitano has started his final kick and is moving onto Davis' shoulder, with the Hollister rider fading. Guarnieri and Haussler are coming from behind at speed as well.
Around the final corner, Plenty of other fastmen are trying to come around him though, with Napolitano kicks into the lead! Can he hold on, with many other sprinters coming as well?
With 250 metres left to the line, the big Italian is still holding the lead. Plenty of other fastmen are trying to come around him though, with Haussler and Cavendish, who has now recovered, on either side of him! Sutton is also coming through!
Of those, it's Haussler that claims victory! The big German managed to find an extra metre in those final moments which made all the difference. He claims the leaders jersey ahead of another flat day tomorrow.
Cavendish pips Sutton to second, but the home rider will still be happy with a podium, an above expectations finish for him. Bazayev and Napolitano complete the top 5.
