Herald Sun Tour - Stage 6
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-1.jpg

The very last stage of this year’s race is a short circuit race. There are 6 laps of a 10.5km long circuit with the only difficulty being a 1.7km long climb which averages a mere 3% and maxes out around 5%. The only other challenge will be the rainy weather, though there is presently no wind. The big question today is can i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis secure enough bonus time to move on to the overall podium? He currently sits in 9th place. A win will put him in 3rd, a second place today will put him in 7th and a third place will move him up 1 to 8th.

The action today is started off by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Nechita.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-2.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png Kairelis goes with him. Both of these riders have been in breaks previously in this race and are clearly feeling good. These two get a small gap and then there is a group of three who look to bridge up:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Bonnet
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Kwok
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Shikai

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-3.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Bonnet is clearly feeling much better after his crash and will be looking to make up for his disappointing time trial result yesterday.

Finally another group of four bridges up and creates our break of the day:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Matthews
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Ariesen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Opie
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Pineau

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-4.jpg

There are some decent sprinters in this group such as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Bonnet and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Matthews, so if it comes down to the break deciding it amongst themselves it could be a good contest. Their gap is out to 1’37” as the second of six laps starts and it starts to grow.

As the third lap starts the lead is 2’39” and already things are looking quite good for the front of the group. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Hollister and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha are on the case, however. Both of them have favourites for today’s stage.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-5.jpg

The gap goes out to over 3 minutes but once it gets to the hill i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Dowsett powers along at the front and cuts down 30” in one kilometre. This means that as the fourth lap starts the gap is at 2’01” with 31.5km remaining. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Ferrari have started to contribute to the pace setting.

The gap starts to crumble and coming over the top of the hill before the lap finishes the gap is down to 24”. Sensing an opportunity i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Geslin puts in an attack.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-6.jpg

He easily overtakes the break, which is swallowed up by the peloton. As the second last lap starts he has a 26” gap over the front of the pack. As a cobblestone rider he will be used to having to make long, hard efforts. The pack behind him is huge though, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Hollister and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Ferrari all having multiple riders forward.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-7.jpg

And it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Agostini who makes the catch on the hill. The wind has started to come up.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-8.jpg

As the final lap begins the same three teams are all jostling for position and no one seems to have a clear dominance. Finally i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Ferrari break up a bit as it becomes apparent that their sprinters are half way down the peloton with 5km to go. This could be a disaster for them!

Seeing that this is a big opportunity for them i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Sambris comes to the front with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Martinez and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis in his wheel. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner is on to the back of this train with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Cucinotta latching on too.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-9.jpg

But suddenly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Cucinotta falls. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Guillen just manages to avoid him but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Cooke is not so lucky and nor is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Kolesnikov!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-10.jpg

These are the only three riders down as the head of the peloton comes around, but some riders come into the corner before too fast and can’t avoid hitting it, causing a true mass pile-up!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-11.jpg

And the best-placed names down are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Bono (13)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Goolen (18)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Beyer (20)

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-12.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis with his two lead-out men, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Sinner and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Guillen were the first men in the peloton to make it through unscathed and a gap opens up behind them. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis realises that he could win the overall from here and he puts in a long attack with 1.6km to go!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-13.jpg

And with 1km to the line he has a solid gap over everyone else but some riders are coming up fast!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-14.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Impey, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Dowsett and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Kiryenka are all looking fast. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Kiryenka is in second overall and could win it with some bonus seconds!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-15.jpg

And i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis sits up as he realises he won’t get a time gap. What a huge sprint that was. He moves himself on to the overall podium.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-16.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Impey takes second with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Dowsett just holding on to third ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Park, who takes fourth. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Guillen is in fifth, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Marcato is sixth and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Kiryenka can only manage seventh. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Gatto, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Geslin and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Maaskant round out the top ten.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Herald6-17.jpg

The crash causes one abandon, which is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Khatuntsev.

And as said, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Davis moves up to third on GC, bumping i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Kirchen down to fourth. He also wraps up the points jersey in the process. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Pineau will take home the mountain jersey and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz.png Bobridge takes yet another jersey for best young rider, showing his huge amount of talent.
