Jayco Herald Sun Tour - Stage 2

It's time for stage 2 of the Herald Sun Tour. Yesterday, Impey won a very strange stage, and todays stage might actually end the same way; a lot of wind again.

The favorites for the win are Greipel, Richeze and yesterdays winner Impey. But who knows, with this wind, a GC favorite might actually try something.

In the first part of the race, we had 4 escapees; Stillfors, Pineau, Mollema and Ahmed. Unfortunately, due to some connection errors, there wasn't any footage of the race until after all the sprints and KoM. However, the most important thing is, that Mollema will be wearing the KoM jersey tomorrow, although tight in points with Ahmed.

The moment we did get footage was a good one, as a group of 8 riders were attacking from the peleton. Among them, GC leader Impey, Sylvain Chavanel, Aitor Hernández Gutierrez and Danilo Kupfernagel as the most notable names.

A few km later, the main pack splits up. A few big names in the last group; Lloret, Evans and Mazet.

At the front chasing group, Impey and teammate De Fauw can't keep up with the pace of the others. Has Impey given to much already?

Eventually, Santander manages to bring the peleton back to most of the escapers. A few riders are still ahead though with a minutes lead.

These are: the early break + Konovalovas, Chavanel, Kupfernagel, Hernández Gutierrez and Thomas Voeckler. An interesting group.

4 riders try to get away from that group, and they succeed. Chavanel, Hernández Gutierrez, Kupfernagel and original escapee Pineau. The others get reeled in by the pack again.

With about 20km to go, the leaders have a really comfortable lead and the organisation in the peleton just isn't there. So 3 riders decide to attack: Duenas, Richeze and Beppu. Shouldn't the later two try their luck in a sprint?

At the front again, Hernández has lost touch with the other 3. While Chavanel is trying to get away on his own.

In the pack, Bbox and Yamaha have set up their sprint trains. This isn't really making any sense at all.

Bad luck for Chavanel, as Pineau catches him with 5km to go and stays in his wheel.

When the sprint starts, Pineau goes over Chavanel easily.

And wins the stage. After being in the break from the start, he certainly deserves this. He also takes the points jersey and leaders jersey, as Chavanel, Kupfernagel and Pineau still had a lead of 1 minute on the pack.

That pack is being lead in by Impey in front of Voeckler. Hernández holds on for 6th.

Then the biggest news. early attacker Stillfors couldn't keep up with the peleton, but wasn't far enough behind to be given a gap. Feillu and Evans sprinted to his wheel, and so everyone ended with the same time. Fuck logic.
