Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 10
SportingNonsense

By far the toughest stage of the race, GC contenders will not be able to sit back, let the breakaway win, and only attack in the last few kilometres - today they must fight to earn their high position overall.

Before the climbers could begin their day, there was an intermediate sprint. Despite no longer having the points jersey, Simon Clarke was still there to win it.

A surprise attacker today was Florentino Marquez. 11th Overall (7 Minutes down) he came into this race as a big favourite but the crash on Stage 1 saw Terciado become Benfica's leader instead.

Behind him was a 5 man group containing prominent attackers in this tour. Stage winners Rutkiewicz and Tizza, then Ladino and Lara Ruiz, who have each taken 2nd on a stage, and finally Arreitunandia, who has been in 3 other breakaways so far.

But Tizza was quickly dropped, and Ladino soon followed. And as the stage went on, Lara Ruiz also had to fall back.

We expected this stage to be interesting, and that proved to be the case as Manuel Medina attacked with 40km to go.

Only Danielson and Chacon could keep up with the Venezuelan national champion.

Saul Raisin almost made it but instead was forced to drap back to the chase group of Siutsou, Astarloza, Vasquez, Terciado, Martinez and Pfannburger. But Martinez was quickly dropped from this group and replaced by Ochoa Quintero, who had finally realised that he needed to attack.

Chacon, Medina and Danielson caught and dropped Arreitunandia and Rutkiewicz and as they descended the second to last climb, they caught Florentino Marquez.

Behind them, Raisin, Astarloza and Siutsou had broken clear of their companions. Astarloza was dropped though and fell back to the others as Raisin and Siutsou held a 30 second gap at most before they all came back together at the foot of the final climb.

By this point, Danielson, Chacon and Medina had a lead of 3 minutes and are almost guaranteed the top 3 positions in the overall GC. The gap remained at this for much of the climb as the 3 riders were more concerned with each other.

The chase group still worked hard though. Pfannburger was the first to go, then Terciado - with Vasquez starting to struggle.

But the leaders are nearing the final kilometre .. as Medina is dropped!!

And then Chacon is dropped too!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/tachira87.png

This is looking very good for Danielson, but whats this? Medina charges past him!!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/MG09/tachira88.png

And its victory for Manuel Medina!

Tom Danielson takes 2nd, just ahead of Chacon

There was also drama in the chase group as we headed up the final climb. Raisin was the first to crack, and Ochoa Quintero also began to struggle as Astarloza led the sprint, but Astarloza too began to fade allowing Siutsou through to take 4th.
