Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 10

With the GC still very much open, this stage is the last one to make an impact in the mountains. Stage 11 is a time trial while stage 12 is pretty flat. Therefore, we should be up for an exciting stage - now with a new race leader.

Before the GC riders took over this stage, Murgoitio attacked - probably to the dismay of those fighting for the mountain jersey. He won the 1st sprint ahead of Astarloza and Ribeiro. He also took the sprint points, this time ahead of Martinez and Chacon.
Murgoitio also took on the final mountain as the first one, leading with 6'30 to the peloton, 34 km to go.

After a few km of climbing, he reached the mountain sprint - and normally, Schwab, Zaugg and co would attack. This time, though, Delgado figured it was time to make a difference. He attacked, but was immediately countered by Quintero and Colorado, then Rodas and green jersey wearer Martinez.

Behind them, Astarloza attacked with Ribeiro, Zaugg and Schwab. While the first two dropped back after the mountain points sprint, Zaugg and Schwab kept going, well-knowing that there were plenty of mountain points at the finish line. Just in front of them, Martinez and Rodas were sprinting for the intermediate points (or, to be exact, the 2nd and 3rd place - Murgoitio was still leading by 5 minutes with 10 km to go!)

Heading onto the final 7 very steep kilometres of the climb, Murgoitio was - amazingly - still leading by 4'40. It was going to be tough for him with the group of favourites, Rodas, Delgado, Martinez, Quintero and Colorado, behind him. They had 40 seconds to Schwab and Zaugg, and they had 30 seconds to Astarloza, Chacon and Ribeiro.

As expected, Martinez couldn't keep up once it got steeper. Instead, Schwab managed to drop Zaugg and bridge the gap to the favourites. It became apparent that they didn't work very together as more riders started coming up, including Astarloza and Chacon - and in the very same moment the latter bridged, his team mate Rodas attacked!

While they were fighting behind, Murgoitio just kept going - and inside the last kilometre, still ahead with 4'15, he secured Benfica yet another fantastic victory! He was way too tired to celebrate, though.

The attacks behind didn't lead to much - so instead, they kept counter-attacking each other all the way to the finish. Schwab had most success as he entered the last km 20 secs ahead of the rest.

Instead of attacking, it turned into a sprint, won by Schwab due to his gap. Rodas got third. No one can really be fully satisfied with this stage, though. Quintero can't be sure that his gap to Colorado and Delgado is large enough to keep them away on time trial - and they could probably have used a few seconds.
