A hilly stage where the GC favourites are definitely going to attack. Who handles the hills the best?
With a mountain sprint not long after the start, it wasn't surprising that no one attacked - obviously, they were going to let the contenders for the points and mountain classification fight it out.
Schwab won the first one, and finishing 2nd on the 2nd sprint, he equalled Zaugg. Also worth mentioning, Martinez won the points sprint ahead of Chacon and Didier.
And more importantly, the GC weren't left untouched either. 90 km from the finish, Quintero, 2nd overall, decided to attack!
Needless to say, it seemed like suicide. He didn't get a very large gap either, meaning that he didn't win the third mountain sprint either. This was won by Ribeiro ahead of Schwab and Zaugg. One of the attackers, Laverde Velez from Benfica, decided to continue along with Quintero, though, making the mission a little bit easier.
At first, they had a stable gap of c. 35 seconds to the peloton, but somehow, they managed to up the pace, increasing it to 1 minute. That prompted Astarloza to attack - followed by Delgado!
Quintero had cracked Laverde Velez, who had also been passed by Delgado/Astarloza. Late attacker Schwab had joined him instead, but behind them, Velez' team mates from Benfica had taken control. Shortly after, everyone except for Quintero, who now had a gap of 55 seconds with 40 km to go, had been caught.
Once again, Quintero managed to increase his gap - this time leading to attacks from Schwab, Thomson, then Rodas and Colorado. Having this group join Quintero would be very difficult for Delgado to handle.
Having now seen that Delgado was in trouble, Mercado, Astarloza, J. Chacon, Ribeiro and Zaugg attacked. Still with no response from Delgado, and with just 20 km to go, it wasn't looking too good for him. There were a few good news for him: In front, Quintero had cracked! Not only had he been caught, he had also been overtaken. At the same time, 4th placed Colorado had attacked from the group.
On the downhill section, he managed to regain contact with Thomson, Rodas and Schwab, though. With 10 km to go, this group was 30 seconds behind Colorado and 20 seconds ahead of Astarloza, Mercado, Chacon, Zaugg and Ribeiro - with the peloton being 55 seconds further behind.
While the two groups merged on during the last 10 km, no one were going to catch Colorado again!
Behind him, the rest were fighting for the podium spots - but just as much for the seconds. With Thomson having worked very hard for his captain Quintero, he'd surely want to see him in yellow after this stage.
The fight for 2nd was very close, but in the end, Quintero had to settle with 3rd.
Losing roughly two minutes can't be too satisfying for Delgado.
