Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 5

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0320.jpg

Last chance for the weaker time trialists to gain time. It`s the 2nd big top finish with lots of more hills before. Next to the GC a lot of KoM points are to be given today. So El Fares` jersey is not safe yet.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0321.jpg

6 riders in todays breakaway:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Boily
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Kadri
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Westra
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Good Energy
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Kratochvila
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Sinkeldam
A pretty strong group actually with last mentioned being only 3'23 behind but also some of the others are not too far behind him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0328.jpg

Rabottini to take the first KoM ahead of Kratochvila and Sinkeldam. No real fight though is a good sign for El Fares.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0331.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0334.jpg

Boily-Kratochvila-Rabottini at the 2nd, Kadri-Sinkeldam-Boily on 3rd and Kadri-Kratochvila-Rabottini on the 4th KoM of the day show some sharing at least.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0338.jpg

Behind Pokerstars doing the main work now. Roche was looking strong on the similar 3rd stage and is one of the candidates today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0341.jpg

3 more hills. It`s not as steep as the previous stages but still a very good chance for strong attacks.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0342.jpg

On top of the Cat.1 Kadri takes a few more points ahead of Westra and Sinkeldam. Slowly the French is coming closer the El Fares but so far he is not passing him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0345.jpg

Early attacks right after the Cat.1.
Italian i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ricco the first to go with lots of riders following:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Roche
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Valverde

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0350.jpg

They are not really creating a gap. But we have a reduced field with ~30 riders only with some big names being left behind. Following riders are in the later group:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Monfort
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Sagan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Gastauer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Guldhammer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Sinkewitz
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Ginanni
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Klemme
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Vanendert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png König
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Bakelants
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0365.jpg

But the gap is not big and some riders jump from the later group to the leader`s group. So it`s i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher being the first to be back.
Gilbert, Costa, Sanchez Gil are the next and so the reduced group immediately is becoming much bigger as those pull more riders with them.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0371.jpg

3 riders immediately attack with some more movement behind:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Gesink
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Hagen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Roche

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Flügel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Trofimov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Ricco
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Taaramae

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Ponzi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Van der Hugenhaben
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Valverde
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Schleck

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Caruso

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0383.jpg

10km to go and we have a group of 12 riders being 1'25 behind the breakaway.
Gesink, Flügel, Hagen, Ponzi, Trofimov, Ricco, Roche, Taaramae, Valverde, Schumacher, Van Garderen, Schleck.

Then the duo Gilbert/Van der Hugenhaben coming 32s later and 45s ahead of the peloton. So some of the attackers didn`t make it.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0385.jpg

Prio Porto with Oliveira and Rothaus Aegon with Olivier and Gomez Marchante are doing the pace behind. Their two leaders are some of the big names left behind.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0389.jpg

Last climb starts and a trio has a small gap:
Kadri, Westra, Kratochvila
+16s: Boily
+10s: Rabottini, Sinkeldam
+38s: Favourites (12)
+39s: Van der Hugenhaben/Gilbert
+36s: Peloton (73)

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0391.jpg

More attacks. This time the first in the favourites group:
Schleck, Ponzi, Hagen and Trofimov look the strongest and attack the yellow jersey.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0393.jpg

From behind 3 solo riders try to jump to the front.
First is Sanchez Gil, who almost reaches the Gilbert group.
Then Claeys a bit behind him and also Costa did attack now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0399.jpg

In front a lot changed. The previous trio did exhaust and is caught by the Schleck group. Also the other breakaway riders got caught but one rider: David Boily was riding in his own pace and is the lone leader now. But will this be enough for him?
28s with a bit more than 3km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0401.jpg

1km later and the gap is still there with the hardest part being done more or less. This last climb before a more flat finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0403.jpg

Roche really is afraid of losing his jersey here and jumps out of the first following group where Schumacher goit dropped being 38s behind. Then 10s later Sanchez Gil, who passed Gilbert/Van der Hugenhaben, who are 52s behind together with Costa and Claeys.
Still some riders such as Ginanni, Gastauer, Bakelants, who will lose time today as they are behind those.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0405.jpg

Surprisingly strong finish by Boily as he still has that gap and almost did not lose anything recently.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0406.jpg

Behind it`s close again. Gesink and Ricco with a small gap to the next trying to go past Roche and the Trofimov group. For the Dutch it`s going for every second now as his time trial advantage might not be enough with in especially the Russian being ahead.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0409.jpg

But the big winner of the day is Boily! Great stage win for him. He was the strongest in the group and takes a deserved win.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0411.jpg

Schleck wins the sprint of the next and actually against three far better sprinters. 46s to Boily. So they did even lose some time.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0413.jpg

Roche with a great finish in the end coming over the line next with a 25s gap. So he will lose his jersey to Ponzi and drop back to 4th.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0415.jpg

Gesink and Ricco next. But ~40s behind Roche already and 11s ahead of the Van Garderen, Taaramae group including the breakaway as well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0416.jpg

Then already Schumacher with a bad day and Sanchez Gil with a better day 2'41 behind the winner. By the look of it, these two will fight for the last top10 spot in tomorrows time trial.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0418.jpg

Gilbert, Costa, Claeys and Van der Hugenhaben some of todays losers being more or less out of the top10 fight. 1min behind the last duo!

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Pais%20Vasco/mg2014_paisvasco_5_PCM0419.jpg

Then lots of big disappointments coming in such as Bakelants, Ginanni, Gastauer, Sagan, Monfort, Klemme, Guldhammer, König or Caruso. Huge time loss for those!
