David Abal was the strongest attacker over the early KoM climb, but he and 12 others were caught. That didnt stop Abal though as he launched the next wave of attacks, and this time, they stayed away.
Eltink, Devenyns, Engels, Kolobnev, Mahoric, Abal, Moinard, Perez Arrieta and Azevedo.
As the only sprinter in the group, Perez Arrieta cruised to victory at the early intermediate sprint. The break tried to attack each other on the main climb of the day, and a split managed to occur.
Abal pulled it all back together though.
The final 2kilometres of the climb were led by Moinard and he split thegroup again, more importantly for him though, he took the KoM points, only just though as he pulled off the front right before the line and it was a 'photo-finish' between him and Kolobnev.
Menchov and Casar attacked from the peleton on the climb but didnt get far before being caught.
More attacks came at the foot of the next climb but they all levelled out. Moinard looked set to take the points again but peeled off a bit earlier this time so Kolobnev took the maximum.
Abal took the next points and as you can see, their lead is already looking good.
Engels and Perez Arrieta are dropped before the next KoM points, which is won by Mahoric. Eltink took the final intermediate sprint and with 36km to go, the break has 6'15 on the peleton!
Azevedo and Mahoric are dropped by the lead group, who still have 4 minutes with 10km to go! Whoever wins could well take the leaders jersey!
Or maybe not? Cycling24 and Virgin are setting a formidable pace and the gap is down to 3 minutes with 7.5km to go! The break will still fight for the win though, and Eltink will lead out. He is the favourite having won the intermediate sprint 33km ago.
But he is starting to fade with 1km to go!
And yes, Abal and Moinard pass him, with Kolobnev going past too!
Victory for Moinard!!
Mahoric takes 6th, while Azevedo is caught by the peleton and takes 7th. Pozzato looks to have taken 8th:
But Pineau is given 8th instead!?
