The final day in the Tour of the Basque country and we have several GC squabbles to decide along with the final stage victory up for grabs.
With a big hill climb in the first 7 kilometres this should be one for the punchaers with decent TT skills and we saw the big TT men's time posted early doors blown away by
Danilo Di Luca
The Italian veteran has had a pretty good race reminding us of the 'good old days' with his runner up spot on day two. Never one for the ride against the clock Di Luca surprises himself by going into the provisional lead with a time of 33.58.
The best time up to that point had been set by chrono men
Bradley Wiggins
and
Brent Bookwalter
who had set times of 34.29 and 34.30 respectively. So it had appeared as if Di Luca has done something sensational, a couple of other riders soon posted times slightly closer to 'the killer' however.
Tim Dees
and
Tom Diggle
Dees coming home with a time of 33.20 and Diggle clocking 33.17, the Brit setting a time much closer to Di Luca at the top of the climb.
The wild card team in the race T.CS Bank have been active in the breakaways, but on GC their riders are perhaps further down than some would expect.
Vasili Kirylenka started the day in 60th place.
Their really big signing for the season Mikhail Ignatiev was only just inside the top 50.
But both were in the groove today as they would go on to set new best marks, first of all Kiryenka sets 33.56 two seconds inside Di Luca's mark. Then Ignatiev would go six second further inside his teammates mark with a time of 33.50.
Usually in a CTour race you would see the crowd start to filter home at this point but this Basque TT is not really one for the testers as full of confidence stage five winner
Filippo Pozzato
would prove.
The Italian shows really that he should have been higher up on GC with a time of 33.45 now sitting ahead of the two Russians and Di Luca.
Stijn Devolder
also comes in close to Pozzato and whilst the former TdF champion has been quiet this race he sets a decent time here also.
Devolder sets 33.49 as the Tinkoff duo are pushed further back, Pozzato now sits comfortably for a while as no-one can get that close to his time other than teammate
Diego Ulissi
who sets 33.56.
How 23rd on GC and world class TT man
David Zabriskie
puts any thoughts of a stage 5 repeat out of the window despite being slower up the climb the American speeds in FIVE seconds faster that 'Pipo'.
So 33.40 is the new best time in this ever changing TT, this will jump the Z man up a few places on GC but he has lost a bit too much time to make significant in roads. Besides as reported before this is not your usual TT,
A few minutes later we have yet another new leader:
Estonian TT champ
Tanel Kangert
has looked in great form in this race and he goes eight seconds quicker than Zabriskie's time with 33.32. Just a minute later he is just eclipsed by
Robin van der Hugenhaben
Who sets 33.31, to hold off Kangert on GC (they started on the same time at 17th and 18th on GC).
The stage lead has been handed around like a hot potato, it proves too hot for Van den HH to handle as now he hands it over to B and O's inconsistent
Edvald Boasson Hagen
The Norwegian sets 33.28 and perhaps has done a Pozzato here in that he has disappointed in the race but looks to pull out a decent stage performance out of the bag.
Stefan Schumacher
though has other ideas.
The stage two winner throws his name in the Stage six hat with another new best of 33.19.
Superactive rider of stage 5 and best young rider
Simone Ponzi
produces a determined TT effort.
It is the Italian youngsters Achilles heel but he does a pretty decent time of 33.35, that see's the Italian into the top five at the expense of Lopez Garcia who drops back to 6th on GC.
The battle for the last place on the GC podium is between
Yuri Trofimov
and
Luis Leon Sanchez Gil
The battle of these two behemoths takes us right to the top of the stage rankings as well as both eclipse Schumachers time. Trofimov goes through in a sensational 33 minutes straight, however LL Sanchez manages to brilliantly go two seconds faster still!
Jan Bakelants
looks set for his second runner up spot of the year on a stage race GC.
But the Belgian does hold on to his points jersey and gains yet more kudos for a fantastic TT here going just one second slower than Trofimov setting 33.01. This would put a lot of pressure normally on the GC leader who started just twenty second in front of Bakelants.
But
Robert Gesink
shows his class.
The Dutch man delivers here in the Basque country showing who is the best by winning the TT with a time of 32.53.
