Well this is about as flat as the Basque country gets today and with the last 3 stages sure to be decisive for the general classification, today might be seen as a day off for the GC favourites. The bookmakers though are not so sure with
Simone Ponzi
listed as one of the favourites for todays technical finish along with
Edvald Boasson Hagen
and
Filippo Pozzato
By the first climb we have a decent looking breakaway...
Drasutis Stundzia
Sébastien Duret
André Steensen
and
Aleksandr Khatuntsev
(Tinkoff)
make up the four men with the Tinkoff rider first over the top of the 10-8-6-4-2 climb with Stundzi second, Steensen third and Durent 4th. Meanwhile three others attack before the top in
Evgeni Sokolov
Arthur Vichot
and
José Antonio Redondo
with Sokolov getting the 5th place.
By the second King of the Mountains all seven breakaways are together and working hard as they roll over the prime point.
Steenson collects the 6 points for the 'win' over the climb with Sokolov and Vichot awarded 4 and 2 points respectively.
Three more riders bravely bridge across feeling it could be a chance of a break today, they are
Adrian Malori
Jos Van Emden
and
David Loosli
It takes some time but all three do get across to the seven others to make a break of ten.
The pack are leaving almost all of the work to
Denis Vorontsov
whose UBS squad are sensing it may be a day for
Stefan Schumacher
who people are talking up as an outsider for the race win.
With 75km to go though Vorontsov is going to have to work hard as the break leads by seven minutes. Several of the riders here are strong including Andre Steensen who having nabbed 12 KoM points already decides to collect six more by attacking at the third prime.
The others roll over with Duret getting 4 points and Redondo the 2, the break allow Steensen to get the sprint as well with Sokolov and Khatuntsev getting second and third.
None of these riders are particularly close to race leader
Jan Bakelants
with Sokolov the best place over eight minutes back.
Vorontsov still is leading the pack alone and has done pretty well to get the gap down to 4.30 with 35km to go. Meanwhile the break rolls through the second sprint with Vichot getting the nod over Steensen and Stundzia, as they go up the steep last categorised climb. Some riders are dropped from the break here as Khatuntsev, Loosli and Van Emden lose touch with Malori struggling to hold on/
Steensen does not go for the prime on this last climb leaving it to Duret to collect the maximum keeping his teammate
Bradley Wiggins
firmly in the climbers jersey. Sokolov is second and Vichot is third as the break is down to seven with Malori just about holding on.
In the pack things look like they are going the breaks way however
Edvald Boasson Hagen
has other ideas.
The Norwegian took an Ardennes classic last year, but has been strangely muted this year and is at last showing some zeal.
With the breaks lead hovering at between two and three minutes as we enter the last 15kms it does look like Hagen may be frustrated in terms of going for a stage win. The pace in the break is still high and Malori is still struggling to hold on.
After his first move is neutralised Hagen goes again getting World Champion
Tejay Van Garderen
for company.
But the other teams continue to mark these moves by riders fairly high up on GC, but we do get more attacks through
David López Garcia
As you can see though there is no weakness shown by Bakelants who is on this last 10km move like a flash determined not to give up his yellow jersey. However it will be no stage win for the Belgian, perhaps with Schumacher so close it is probably for the best.
The break is lead out by the reasonably fast Duret, Redondo is sitting first wheel then Steenson, Sokolov, Stundzia, Vicot and the knackered Malori.
It is a matter of who has the most left and who has a decent kick, not many can match the lead out by Duret who leads into the final kilometre.
However Steensen and Sokolov have manage to hold Duret's wheel and Sokolov shows he has by far the most strength romping away.
The Bacardi man takes a welcome victory for the newly promoted team who have struggled to sparkle too often thus far this year.
He opened a fair gap behind with Duret taking second ahead of Steensen, Vichot, Stundzia and Redondo.
Malori is 7th with the pack being led in by Pozzato, Ponzi, Ventuso and Schumacher the latter taking the points jersey sole lead.
