Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 3
alexkr00
The queen stage of the race, with the last climb being only 3 kilometers away from the finish line. Riders such as Schleck and Valverde will be looking to gain some time back, while Joaquin Rodriguez will do his best to defend the yellow jersey

Only three riders made it into the day's breakaway: Gastauer, Thire and Brizuela. Neither of them was a threat for Faiers' red jersey though
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0003-48.png

Brizuela was first at the top of the first climb, while on the second one only Gastauer was able to follow his wheel, with Thire being caught by the pack
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0005-32.png

The others duo didn't stay in front for too much long either, being caught right after the top of the second climb

Both Faiers and Di Maggio failed to gain any KoM points today, but after winning a few points on the first climb and being first at the top of the third, Talabardon became the virtual red jersey wearer

But there were some even bigger news in the pack, as the white jersey wearer and 3rd overall, Justo Tenorio, crashed on the downhill and with only a few kilometers left before the finish it was impossible for him to come back

No one was interested about the first intermediate sprint of the day and Pauwels took it, while Sony Ericsson were leading the pack for Trofimov

Joaquin Rodriguez was first at the top of the fourth climb, while he has trying to defend his yellow jersey from the attacks of Trofimov, Spilak and Kashechkin
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0018-23.png

On the downhill, Spilak and Kashechkin took the lead of the race, with the Lipton rider winning the second intermediate sprint of the day
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0024-22.png

10 kilometers before the finish, they were joined by 6 riders in front: Rodriguez, Cobo, Di Luca, Trofimov and Ghisalberti, with Pedraza and Samuel Sanchez not far behind
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0034-15.png

Trofimov won the last intermediate sprint of the day which was placed at the foot of the last climb, right before the important things were about to happen
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0042-11.png

The pack wasn't too far away from the leading group at the bottom of the climb and some of the favorites that missed the attack before were able to find their way into the first group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0043-9.png

Five kilometers before the finish, 9 riders were in the lead: Kashechkin, Cobo, Trofimov, Ghisalberti, Pedraza, Di Luca and Samuel Sanchez - from the early attackers, Shleck and Valverde being the new comers
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0048-3.png

2 kilometers before the top of the climb, the yellow jersey was in trouble, as Joaquin Rodriguez was missing from the front group and he wasn't able to keep it up with the chasing group either, as those were searching for their into the leading group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0056-8.png

At the top of the climb there were some slightly changes into the leading group. Pedraza and Ghisalberti weren't there anymore, while Brajkovic had joined the group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0066-6.png

Joaquin Rodriguez was leading the chase and even though the gap wasn't too big, with Trofimov in the lead group he was in real danger to lose the yellow jersey
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0074-7.png

With one kilometer to go, Schleck powered away from the others and in the last corner he was trying to defend his lead in front of Cobo and Valverde
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0084-4.png

The Spaniards were to late and they weren't able to stop Schleck taking his first win of the season
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0091-3.png

Trofimov finished 5th, with same time as Schleck though and he was favorite to take the yellow jersey, while Rodriguez was struggling to make his way back into the leading group
i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz142/alexkr_cofidis/PCM0099-3.png

Kashechkin, Di Luca, Brajkovic and Samuel Sanchez also got the same time as Schleck bar the bonification seconds

Joaquin Rodriguez lost 47 seconds on the road today and the yellow jersey to Trofimov. The Spaniard is still second in the GC though, which isn't really a bad place before the final 3 stages of the race
