The first stage of the race won't give us the name of the rider that will be on the first place at the end of the race but we will definitely know who will not be as the big gaps are very like to be made on the 3 climbs that end the stage
Di Maggio and Mugerli were leading the race on the first climb of the day but there were a few other breakaway groups behind them as well
The two were also in front at the top of the second climb as well but took it easy on the flat section that followed the climb and on the third ascent 5 other riders joined the leading group
The new comers were: Schreurs, Talabardon, Herrero Lorente - first at the top of the climb, Pardilla and Tschopp
No one seemed particularly interested in the KoM jersey but after scoring some good points on the first 2 climbs of the day, Di Maggio won the fourth one and became the virtual wearer of the red jersey
But the Italian didn't score any points on the next climb, where Pardilla, Mugerli and Herrero Lorente were in the first three places at the top
Pardilla also won the first intermediate sprint of the day, while Herrero Lorente took the second one. On the climb that followed the intermediate sprints the leading group started to break apart, while behind them the big moves were starting in the pack
Only 2 riders survived Di Maggio's pace on the sixth climb of the day and followed him into the last kilometers of the race: Pardilla and Schreurs
Talabardon rejoined the leading group on the flat section that followed the climb. That meant that 4 riders were in the lead, 20 kilometers before the line, with the favorites still struggling to make the difference in the pack
The French rider was looking really strong and on the next climb he got away from the other escapes, going solo with just one climb left
He was followed by a group with a mixture of favorites and other remaining escapes. The important names that were in that group were Joaquin Rodriguez, Brajkovic, Efimkin and Tenorio but there was still no sight of the actual favorites that were expected to shine today
At the top of the last climb, Talabardon was still in the led but he was joined by Tenorio and Efimkin, with the others no too far either
Even the pack wasn't far way with some riders making the jump from the pack to the leading group(s)
On the downhill almost the entire race changed in only a few kilometers and it was Philips' Joaquin Rodriguez who took the lead of the race, after catching and leaving behind the 3 riders that were leading the race at the top of the last climb
The Spaniard entered the last 5 kilometers of the stage in a solo lead, followed at 30 seconds by Tenorio, Talabardon, Efimkin, Trofimov and Hagen, with the pack right behind them
Trofimov and Tenorio were really fast on the flat section that ended the stage but it looked impossible for them to take back the time that Rodriguez won on the downhill
Joaquin Rodriguez takes the stage win and becomes the first leader of the race but there's no time for celebration for him as Trofimov and Tenorio are coming and he might lose the time gap
Trofimov took the second place in front of Tenorio but they both lost 15 seconds to Rodriguez
Hagen and Talabardon came at 32 seconds, while Efimkin lost it in the last kilometers and finished 54 seconds behind Rodriguez
Bakelants led the sprint in the pack and he brought it in the same time as Efimkin, 54 seconds behind the winner
