The continental version of Avila - Avila is a cobbled circuit race. For the Vuelta we leave town for some tough climbing, before returning for a slightly uphill finish.

Hoogerland started the day on 35 KoM points and is intent on increasing that. Winning the Cat 1 Puerto de Mijares takes him to 51, closing in on Preidler's lead of 72.

After the breakaway's gap widens to 6 and a half minutes, we see Vueling and Rothaus - Aegon come forward to lead the peloton. They don't like the presence of the likes of Roche, Bibby, Kunshin and Lopez Garcia and are riding to defend the positions of Valverde and Gomez Marchante.

Hoogerland won both climbs, taking him to 71 points. 1 behind Preidler with one more climb still to come.

Vueling and Rothaus are still chasing hard. The break now lead by just 4 minutes, with the mid-stage attack bang in the middle at 2 minutes.

Over the course of the descent the peloton cap is cut to 3 minutes, with that chasing group now only 1 minute away from forming a 14 man group. Vueling are satisfied that they have contained the threat to Valverde, leaving only Rothaus to relay now - alongside Simply Red Bull.

And by the start of the last big climb, the breakaway group have just 2'10 on the peloton. They are however pulling away from the chasing group now, with that gap up to 1'30.

The main attackers of the stage really seemed to struggle at the end - Valverde and Machado both at the back of the group.

But still, no big time gaps today and the Mountain stages are starting to run out. The breakway winning again is great news for the sprinters in the Points classification with the time limit going to be the only likely threat for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png

Mohs there - and all riders survived that cut today once again. The King of the Mountains jersey also looks like it could evade the GC riders with Hoogerland and Preidler holding the top positions currently.

Meanwhile after a poor day yesterday, Santander have bounced back to extend their teams classification lead. The U25 competition is hardly worth mentioning, as Tenorio has been the known winner of that all race.
