There's a British rider in the race lead and Stage 3 of the race takes us to the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, for a steep uphill finish. Pre-race this was viewed as the first chance for gaps to occur but well, we know that it has already been beaten to that accolade!

That is crucial because although Zingle went on to win the two remaining climbs, the end of day totals were Kneisky 17, Zingle 15, so Bouygues Telecom take the first KoM jersey.

They hold a 3 minute lead with 45km remaining, with Pinot winning the uncontested intermediate sprint. Handy for the Frenchman as he is closest to the race lead at 2'21 down. Make that 2'15.

So far in the stage the pace has been left to Vesuvio, which would suggest a good chance of this breakaway staying clear. But the Luxembourg squad disagreed and after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2014/micros/vsa.png De Gendt was instrumental in cutting the gap to 2 minutes, Lotto, Jaguar, Pokerstars, Festina and Vueling all sent riders forward to help bring back the attack.

With 10km to go it is clear they will be caught.

But Swift is still there and takes 13th on the stage. Prime positioning from him and a lacklustre pace means he keeps the race lead, against the odds!

A gap forms behind the first 22 and it is more bad news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2014/micros/pok.png Roche. The stage should have suited him but terrible positioning at the bottom, and the best he can manage is still leading to a time loss - he actually finishes with teammate Degenkolb, who started the hill much closer to the front.

The gaps were Valverde at 1'26 to Lutsenko, the 'Peloton' at 2'01, and Group Roche at 2'49.

There is a further gap to a larger group at 3'08. All that means that after 3 stages we are left with Ben Swift in the race lead with his his 40 seconds worth of time bonuses.
