Vuelta a Espana - Stage 21
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-1.jpg

And here we are at last! Only 100km sit between the riders and the finish line in Madrid! The sprinters are favourites but god only knows if a break will actually win or not. Our first attack of the stage comes from a regular in the breakaways, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Arnold Jeannesson.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-2.jpg

He is joined by five more riders and they will form our break of the day:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman (of course)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Chris Froome
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Dan Craven
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Evgeni Sokolov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Jelle Vanendert
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Damiano Caruso

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-3.jpg

Very early in the day we have a fall in the pack - i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Dmitri Medvedev. His support riding in the mountains has been somewhat disappointing this race and now with his fall it is clear that he just doesn’t have form at the moment.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-4.jpg

Unlike yesterday the maximum gap for the break is 4’05” before i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Pokerstars work together to bring in the break back. This short stage means that they can work harder because they don’t have to pull for at least 160km.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-5.jpg

We now enter the final circuits. It is a short and fairly easy climb with a descent. That descent leads down to the finish line, which could make for an interesting conclusion. Through the sprint point which marks the summit of the first of these three climbs the break’s lead is down to 2’05”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-6.jpg

The gap comes down steadily and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso leads us into the final 13km of the race through the finish line. The gap is down to 56” so the pace has to remain high.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-7.jpg

But this high pace together with the tight turns causes some troubles as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Konte and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Diggle fall. In fact the fall from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Diggle is so bad that he has to throw in the towel and abandon with under 10km of the whole Grand Tour left! That’s tragic and there are tears clearly visible on his face.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-8.jpg

Of course no one is going to wait for him and the pack pushes onwards. With 5.6km remaining the break is caught, which means that we will actually get a proper finish today! i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Welle Jallays makes the catch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-9.jpg

Two trains form and there are a lot of sprinters missing from the vicinity. Clearly 3 weeks have taken their toll. The two trains are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Meyer
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Dockx are also around here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-10.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Dockx falls in line behind i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen opts to go behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy. He times this well because i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dumoulin comes off and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb starts to just power away.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-11.jpg

But what’s this on the far right of the road? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Grillo is bringing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde up!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-12.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss’s train can’t cope with the speed of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb and it just breaks down, leaving the sprinter without a lead-out.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-13.jpg

With 1km remaining i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Holloway launches his sprint and so too does the young i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy. But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde has several bike lengths on them!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-14.jpg

With 400 metres to go these two pass i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is coming up on the outside too, but has he left it too late?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-15.jpg

Yes he has! i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Dan Holloway wins another stage of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V21-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Stayen is just a wheel length behind in second. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy is in third, which is a magnificent result! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Valverde holds on for fourth with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Facci coming from nowhere to take fifth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Impey and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss can only manage sixth and seventh. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Bibby, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Grillo round out the top ten.
