So here we are - the long-awaited queen stage. There are six categorised climbs, all of them quite tough. The full list of climbs is:
Puerto de Alisas – 9.3km @ 6.1% - 10 points
Puerto de la Sia – 17.5km @ 5.8% - 16 points
Portillo de Lunada – 7km @ 5.9% - 10 points
Puerto de Campillo – 4.8km @ 7.3% - 10 points
Puerto de la Bragia – 6.8km @ 6.6% - 10 points
Puerto de las Estacas de Trueba – 13.5km @ 6% - 16 points and the finish line.
Our first attacker today is Arnold Jeannesson. Remember that the mountain jersey will almost certainly be decided today so there should be a lot of competition to get into the break.
And indeed there is a long list of attackers. Here they are with the number of mountain points that they have acquired:
Jaroslav Kulhavy (+23’17”)
Jose Mendes (34 pts)
Jackson Rodriguez
Marcello Pavarin (12 pts)
Dmitri Grabovski
Wilco Kelderman (32 pts)
Jude Libert (24 pts)
Brent Bookwalter
Joost Posthuma (2 pts)
Max Oste-MacDonald (48 pts)
Michal Kwiatkowski (4 pts)
Vegard Robinson Bugge (28 pts)
Matea Kvasina (48 pts)
Philip Deignan (30 pts)
Chris Froome
Peter Sagan
Sebastian Moinard
Daniel Teklehaimanot (16 pts)
Tim Kennaugh (4 pts)
But ultimately only some of these riders can make it into the breakaway though as it turns out we have a huge break! The ones who make it are:
Max Oste-MacDonald (48 pts)
Jose Mendes (34 pts)
Jude Libert (24 pts)
Daniel Teklehaimanot (16 pts)
Marcello Pavarin (12 pts)
Tim Kennaugh (4 pts)
Michal Kwiatkowski (4 pts)
Joost Posthuma (2 pts)
Jaroslav Kulhavy (+23’17”)
Jackson Rodriguez
Brent Bookwalter
Dmitri Grabovski
This is quite a large group and there are some riders who are well placed in the mountain classification. Remember that classification leader Maillet is on 58 points but he couldn’t come out to defend that as he is too busy working for Machado today.
The break start the first climb, Puerto de Alisas, with a lead of 3’28”. Many, many kilometres of climbing face them today.
Oste-MacDonald and Libert look like they will be the two fighting for the mountain points today. Remember that Mendes isn’t as good on these longer climbs so won’t be able to fight for the points too well. Both of these riders attack near the top and Oste-MacDonald takes the 10 points. This moves him on to 58 and tied for the lead in that classification.
The next climb is the 17.5km Puerto de la Sia. On paper it is that long, at least, but in reality this is a climb in two halves with a descent in the middle so that riders can recover. As such we don’t see a lot of interest happening here up front and when we reach the top Oste-MacDonald is followed by Libert again but Oste-MacDonald manages to take the 16 points to put him clear on 74. This could be the day which wins him this jersey.
The gap is out to 10’34” but it isn’t because the peloton are going slowly. Rienda Segura and Serrano are doing most of the pacing and in fact they drop a group of 63 riders on this climb.
That number increases by 1 on the descent as Johann Tschopp falls.
A short descent takes us to the third climb of the day – the Portillo de Lunada. It is one of the easier climbs today, which isn’t saying much. Oste-MacDonald once again goes over the top in first place and Libert continues to put himself in a good position with his second palace. The gap back to the 108 man bunch is now at 11’14”.
We have a much longer descent now to the Puerto de Campillo, the shortest climb of the day but also the steepest. Oste-MacDonald attacks for the mountain points and gets them but this time there is no challenge. Kulhavy rolls over in second here.
But on the descent there is a new attack up front! Kulhavy attacks and drags Oste-MacDonald, Rodriguez and Kennaugh with him! As they start the 5th climb, the steep Puerto de la Bragia, their gap over the others is at 48”.
So now we enter the crucial part of the day – the final two climbs. Just as a reminder here are their stats and profiles:
Puerto de la Bragia – 6.8km @ 6.6%
Puerto de las Estacas de Trueba – 13.5km @ 6%
As the four leaders reach the summit it becomes clear that Oste-MacDonald isn’t going to attack. He probably figures that he already has enough points and may be saving himself for the finish line, if it comes to that. Kulhavy leads over with Oste-MacDonald still taking second here. They are 1’30” ahead of Libert and another minute ahead of the rest of the former breakaway. Not only that but they are more than 7 minutes up on the peloton.
With 2km left on this penultimate climb we get the first signs of life in the pack as a lot of favourites attack away:
Rujano
Duarte
Tenorio
Ricco
Machado
Denifl
Martin
Samwel
It is weird to see Samwel going ahead without Schleck attacking. However, whatever their manager was thinking doesn’t matter as Contador pulls them all back over the top of the climb.
On the descent Sanchez and Plaza attack together. The sudden change in pace causes Ortega to fall, but Valls is much more level-headed and pulls them back with a fair degree of ease.
Up front the break reach our final climb and almost straight away Oste-MacDonald decides to show just how strong he is today and he attacks away.
He won’t be having things that easy, however, and Kulhavy brings him back.
This climb is 13.5km long and so it isn’t far into the climb before Schleck launches his attack! He is followed by:
Tenorio
Machado
Denifl
Uran
This attack is dragged back by Eastman, which is a surprisingly level-headed move from the young American.
Up front, seeing that his attack didn’t work Oste-MacDonald instead decides to just lift the pace and ride everyone else off his wheel. Rodriguez is the first to drop and then the other two are ridden off as well!
Duarte, Denifl and Ricco now attack away together
But it is Schleck who brings them back and keeps it under control. Denifl and Ricco are just ahead of him on GC so he needs to keep them close.
With 5km remaining up front, once again all four o the riders are together again. Just for a change it is Oste-MacDonald who launches an attack to try to break things up! How is he not hurting badly after all these attacks?
We get our next attempt to get away from the bunch – Machado, Duarte and Eastman go. This is clearly why Eastman dragged the earlier attack back in.
This particular attack is brought back by Valls, who is doing a good job for Tenorio here. These attacks also see all of the dropped breakaway riders except for Libert and the four who are up front.
We have to wait a couple of kilometres for our next attack and this time it is Rujano, who is followed by Scarponi.
Scarponi is brought back by Duarte but Rujano pulls out a small gap!
Oste-MacDonald’s attack really put the pressure on the rest of the leaders but Kulhavy manages to ride up to his back wheel. Rodriguez and Kennaugh are hurting, however.
Rujano has pulled out a 40” gap on the peloton as he goes past Libert, who is dragged into the bunch.
The two leaders go under the kite and Kulhavy leads. Oste-MacDonald lets a small gap open up...
And Jaroslav Kulhavy takes the stage win on one of the toughest stages of the race!
Oste-MacDonald clearly just burnt himself out with his attacks both on this climb and throughout the day to take the mountain points. Regardless, he has to be pleased with the mountain jersey. Kennaugh takes third and Rodriguez is fourth.
A couple of minutes later Rujano goes under the kite with the peloton behind him... a quick count shows that there are still 26 riders in that group.
Tenorio was able to save a lot of energy today so he sprints remarkably well and in fact closes the entire gap to Rujano, ensuring that no time gaps will be registered here.
Or does he? In fact the acceleration of the sprint ensures that a gap in this group opens up, with 12 riders losing 46” on the others – so who is in this group? The biggest names are Guldhammer, van der Hugenhaben, Plaza and Sanchez.
So how does this affect the top 10? Well Rujano moves into tenth ahead of Sanchez... but that’s it. After all the hype on this stage not a lot happened. There is still the mountain stage tomorrow but with the descent before the finish it is possible that there may not be any gaps once again.
