Vuelta a Espana - Stage 18
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-1.jpg

So here we are - the long-awaited queen stage. There are six categorised climbs, all of them quite tough. The full list of climbs is:
Puerto de Alisas – 9.3km @ 6.1% - 10 points
Puerto de la Sia – 17.5km @ 5.8% - 16 points
Portillo de Lunada – 7km @ 5.9% - 10 points
Puerto de Campillo – 4.8km @ 7.3% - 10 points
Puerto de la Bragia – 6.8km @ 6.6% - 10 points
Puerto de las Estacas de Trueba – 13.5km @ 6% - 16 points and the finish line.

Our first attacker today is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Arnold Jeannesson. Remember that the mountain jersey will almost certainly be decided today so there should be a lot of competition to get into the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-2.jpg

And indeed there is a long list of attackers. Here they are with the number of mountain points that they have acquired:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jaroslav Kulhavy (+23’17”)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Jose Mendes (34 pts)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Jackson Rodriguez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Marcello Pavarin (12 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Dmitri Grabovski
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Wilco Kelderman (32 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Jude Libert (24 pts)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Brent Bookwalter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Joost Posthuma (2 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Max Oste-MacDonald (48 pts)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michal Kwiatkowski (4 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vegard Robinson Bugge (28 pts)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Matea Kvasina (48 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Philip Deignan (30 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Chris Froome
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Peter Sagan
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Sebastian Moinard
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Daniel Teklehaimanot (16 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh (4 pts)

But ultimately only some of these riders can make it into the breakaway though as it turns out we have a huge break! The ones who make it are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Max Oste-MacDonald (48 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Jose Mendes (34 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Jude Libert (24 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Daniel Teklehaimanot (16 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Marcello Pavarin (12 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Tim Kennaugh (4 pts)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Michal Kwiatkowski (4 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Joost Posthuma (2 pts)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jaroslav Kulhavy (+23’17”)
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Jackson Rodriguez
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Brent Bookwalter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Dmitri Grabovski

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-3.jpg

This is quite a large group and there are some riders who are well placed in the mountain classification. Remember that classification leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Maillet is on 58 points but he couldn’t come out to defend that as he is too busy working for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado today.

The break start the first climb, Puerto de Alisas, with a lead of 3’28”. Many, many kilometres of climbing face them today.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert look like they will be the two fighting for the mountain points today. Remember that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Mendes isn’t as good on these longer climbs so won’t be able to fight for the points too well. Both of these riders attack near the top and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald takes the 10 points. This moves him on to 58 and tied for the lead in that classification.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-5.jpg

The next climb is the 17.5km Puerto de la Sia. On paper it is that long, at least, but in reality this is a climb in two halves with a descent in the middle so that riders can recover. As such we don’t see a lot of interest happening here up front and when we reach the top i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert again but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald manages to take the 16 points to put him clear on 74. This could be the day which wins him this jersey.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-6.jpg

The gap is out to 10’34” but it isn’t because the peloton are going slowly. Rienda Segura and Serrano are doing most of the pacing and in fact they drop a group of 63 riders on this climb.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-7.jpg

That number increases by 1 on the descent as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Johann Tschopp falls.

A short descent takes us to the third climb of the day – the Portillo de Lunada. It is one of the easier climbs today, which isn’t saying much. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald once again goes over the top in first place and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert continues to put himself in a good position with his second palace. The gap back to the 108 man bunch is now at 11’14”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-8.jpg

We have a much longer descent now to the Puerto de Campillo, the shortest climb of the day but also the steepest. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald attacks for the mountain points and gets them but this time there is no challenge. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy rolls over in second here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-9.jpg

But on the descent there is a new attack up front! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy attacks and drags i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Rodriguez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kennaugh with him! As they start the 5th climb, the steep Puerto de la Bragia, their gap over the others is at 48”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-10.jpg

So now we enter the crucial part of the day – the final two climbs. Just as a reminder here are their stats and profiles:
Puerto de la Bragia – 6.8km @ 6.6%
Puerto de las Estacas de Trueba – 13.5km @ 6%

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-11.jpg

As the four leaders reach the summit it becomes clear that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald isn’t going to attack. He probably figures that he already has enough points and may be saving himself for the finish line, if it comes to that. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy leads over with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald still taking second here. They are 1’30” ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert and another minute ahead of the rest of the former breakaway. Not only that but they are more than 7 minutes up on the peloton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-12.jpg

With 2km left on this penultimate climb we get the first signs of life in the pack as a lot of favourites attack away:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Martin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Samwel

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-13.jpg

It is weird to see i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Samwel going ahead without i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck attacking. However, whatever their manager was thinking doesn’t matter as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Contador pulls them all back over the top of the climb.

On the descent i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sanchez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza attack together. The sudden change in pace causes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Ortega to fall, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls is much more level-headed and pulls them back with a fair degree of ease.

Up front the break reach our final climb and almost straight away i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald decides to show just how strong he is today and he attacks away.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-14.jpg

He won’t be having things that easy, however, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy brings him back.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-15.jpg

This climb is 13.5km long and so it isn’t far into the climb before i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck launches his attack! He is followed by:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-16.jpg

This attack is dragged back by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Eastman, which is a surprisingly level-headed move from the young American.

Up front, seeing that his attack didn’t work i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald instead decides to just lift the pace and ride everyone else off his wheel. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Rodriguez is the first to drop and then the other two are ridden off as well!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-17.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco now attack away together

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-18.jpg

But it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck who brings them back and keeps it under control. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Denifl and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Ricco are just ahead of him on GC so he needs to keep them close.

With 5km remaining up front, once again all four o the riders are together again. Just for a change it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald who launches an attack to try to break things up! How is he not hurting badly after all these attacks?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-19.jpg

We get our next attempt to get away from the bunch – i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Machado, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Eastman go. This is clearly why i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/cal_zpsd3e3d363.png Eastman dragged the earlier attack back in.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-20.jpg

This particular attack is brought back by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Valls, who is doing a good job for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio here. These attacks also see all of the dropped breakaway riders except for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert and the four who are up front.

We have to wait a couple of kilometres for our next attack and this time it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano, who is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Scarponi.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-21.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Scarponi is brought back by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Duarte but i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano pulls out a small gap!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald’s attack really put the pressure on the rest of the leaders but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy manages to ride up to his back wheel. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Rodriguez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kennaugh are hurting, however.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-22.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano has pulled out a 40” gap on the peloton as he goes past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Libert, who is dragged into the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-23.jpg

The two leaders go under the kite and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Kulhavy leads. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald lets a small gap open up...

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-24.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Jaroslav Kulhavy takes the stage win on one of the toughest stages of the race!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-25.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Oste-MacDonald clearly just burnt himself out with his attacks both on this climb and throughout the day to take the mountain points. Regardless, he has to be pleased with the mountain jersey. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kennaugh takes third and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Rodriguez is fourth.

A couple of minutes later i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano goes under the kite with the peloton behind him... a quick count shows that there are still 26 riders in that group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-26.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Tenorio was able to save a lot of energy today so he sprints remarkably well and in fact closes the entire gap to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano, ensuring that no time gaps will be registered here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-27.jpg

Or does he? In fact the acceleration of the sprint ensures that a gap in this group opens up, with 12 riders losing 46” on the others – so who is in this group? The biggest names are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Guldhammer, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png van der Hugenhaben, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Plaza and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sanchez.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game%202/V18-28.jpg

So how does this affect the top 10? Well i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Rujano moves into tenth ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sanchez... but that’s it. After all the hype on this stage not a lot happened. There is still the mountain stage tomorrow but with the descent before the finish it is possible that there may not be any gaps once again.
