So here we are – one of the two stages that can lay claim to being the queen stages of the race. Though the course is only 137.6km long we have five hard categorised climbs along the way, culminating in the finishing climb up the Passo Tapia. The five climbs, along with their statistics are:
Col de Marie-Blanque – 11km @ 5.3%
Col d’Ichere – 4.1km @ 7.3%
Col de Soudet – 18.5km @ 5.9%
Puerto de Larrau – 16.3km @ 7.4%
Passo Tapia – 9.2km @ 5.6%
We have a total of 46.6km worth of climbing today. It is interesting to note that the finishing climb is in fact probably the second easiest of all the passes taken in today, with only the Ichere being any easier. As we hit the first climb, the Col de Marie-Blanque, our break is still forming. Here is a quick look at the profile of the first two climbs of the course in some more detail.
We get a 7 man break forming on the climb:
Jocelin Maillet
Christophe Kern
Max Oste-MacDonald
Sergio Pardilla
Matea Kvasina
Jude Libert
Daniel Teklehaimanot
It is an interesting group of mostly climbing domestiques here. Pardilla is the best placed but he is still 13’21” down so isn’t a huge threat on GC. It is also interesting to see some of the teams with highly placed GC riders getting a teammate in here – Pearl, Bacardi and Vesuvio all have riders high up on GC.
Meanwhile back in the peloton there is already a split as 73 cyclists drop back. Perhaps fearing a repeat of yesterday’s early rupture in the pack almost all the GC riders are in the first group. The only ones in this back group are:
Nerz
Scarponi
Plaza
There is an expectation as we near the top that there will be a fierce fight for the points. The jersey will almost certainly change hands today based on this break. Yet, no one attacks and Pardilla rolls over in first ahead of Oste-MacDonald and then Kvasina. They have a lead of only 1’10” over the bunch, who really aren’t giving them a lot of rope.
Scarponi gets back into the peloton with a strong solo ride, while Plaza sits 3 minutes back and is working on his own to get up. Nerz is just sitting in this second group.
The gap to the front still isn’t huge and so three more riders try to get away to join the break:
Woet Poels
Peter Kennaugh
Dan Craven
Surprisingly the rider in the bunch who controls this is the young Nikias Arndt. Perhaps B&O are looking for Guldhammer to have an aggressive race later?
There is only a 1 minute gap as the break hit the steep Col d’Ichere. Plaza manages to get back into the peloton and, fortunately for him, even Nerz’s large group gets back. This shows that the peloton have sat up somewhat and this is shown as the break cross the mountain prime 2’54” ahead. This time Oste-MacDonald takes the 10 points while Kvasina takes second and Kern third. Oste-MacDonald is really well placed in that competition now.
Perhaps looking for a bit more air time, Teklehaimanot leads the break on to the Col de Soudet. This is the longest climb of the day at 18.5km and it has a decent gradient of 5.9%. That gradient is a bit deceptive however, as there are several false flat sections that make it seems less steep than it actually is.
Though he hasn’t done a great deal it will still be a shame for their manager to see Michael Vanderaerden fall off his bike. He was struggling in a small group behind the peloton anyway but may have to worry about the time limit now. As it happens the peloton is so slow that even most of the sprinters he was with get back to the bunch.
Up front the competition for these mountain points gets slightly more interesting as Oste-MacDonald attacks for the mountain points. No one else is particularly interested but Kvasina keeps his good position by taking another second place ahead of Pardilla. This puts Oste-MacDonald equal on points with Jose Mendes, the current leader of the mountain classification.
The pack is led over 8’40” later and there are still 163 riders here, but with 2 climbs to go that isn’t likely to last much longer. Maximiliano Richeze is the next rider to fall out of the pack on the long descent to the next climb. That climb is the Puerto de Larrau. At 16.3km in length it is the second longest climb but with a gradient of 7.4% it is the absolute steepest on the course. There are several sections right through the climb which are over 10% in gradient. And all this combined means that things are going to get tough for some.
Indeed Santander decide to send Rienda Segura up to start to set the pace. This causes 50 riders to drop off the pace with 13.5km still to the summit of this climb. The gap to the break had maxed out around 9 minutes but now starts to creep down.
And with 8.4km to the summit we are going through one of the really steep sections. Here Eastman (19th) decides to put in a long-range attack. He is followed by Scarponi (33rd) and Hacecky (20th).
These 3 get a decent gap and it inspires more attacks:
Duarte (18th)
Nepomnyachsniy (35th)
Ricco (7th)!
These three are brought back quickly by Lopez Garcia but quickly Duarte and Ricco attack away together and this time they get a gap!
These two manage to climb up to Eastman and Scarponi, who have now left Hacecky slightly behind. Realising that this is a potential opportunity to make back a lot of time we get an attack from Rujano (15th). This is great racing!
This group of 5 gets a gap of 1’20” over the bunch and is looking dangerous even with the rest of the course to come. As such a few more favourites decide to attack away:
Schleck (9th)
Guldhammer (11th)
And of course... Tenorio! Even the race leader is getting involved this far out!
This attack is controlled by Denifl... except Schleck who manages to force a gap! He starts to ride solo in front of the pack.
They reach the summit of the climb up front and this time several riders show an interest in the points. Pardilla is the one who leads over the climb ahead of Kvasina and the Oste-MacDonald. Oste-MacDonald is now in the provisional mountain jersey.
The gap has clearly been reduced by these attacks as Ricco leads his group over the top 5’12” later.
Schleck only has about 20” on the bunch behind him but four more riders now attack up right before the summit:
Denifl (5th)
Plaza (12th)
Sanchez (10th)
Guldhammer (11th)
They catch him over the top and the five riders start to descend together. They have a problem however, as behind them the now only 37 man peloton is led by Kulhavy, the Milka rider who is an incredibly good descender. This proves to be a good choice from his team as it proves enough to catch the five attackers.
Unfortunately, this increase in pace also leads to Nepomnyachsniy crashing out of the peloton. He was 35th at the start of the day and may risk losing some time, but more importantly he can’t support Uran now. Further back up the mountain Copeland falls.
So now the descent finishes and we get to the finishing section. There are some short foothills before we hit the Passo Tapia. The climb is a decent 9.2km long but it only averages 5.6%. Under normal circumstances this would not cause the biggest gaps but after a day of racing, who knows what could happen?
There are still about 4 minutes between the lead group and the peloton. As such Oste-MacDonald and Libert decide that they will attack away for the stage win. If they can put the others in trouble now then they could get an advantage later in the climb.
Several favourites put in an attack before we hit the climb:
Denifl (5th)
Machado (4th)
Sanchez (10th)
Contador (3rd)
Unfortunately for them Schleck controls this attack. It does have the effect of bringing in the attacking group of Ricco and Rujano, however. So now all the favourites are together for the final part of this race.
We now hit the very start of the climb and here is the situation:
16”
3’04”
3’20”
2 Leaders
--->
5 Chasers
--->
Peloton (45)
Ricco leads an attack as soon as the climb starts but there are just too many riders involved so the peloton has no problem controlling this one. The rider in 7th place is having a really aggressive ride today!
Eastman attacks away solo now and he gets a gap! And who is going to follow him? Ricco of course!
This seems to be a key move because as the bunch can see that it is working, we get a whole raft of attacks!
Tenorio
Machado
Contador
Plaza
Hacecky
Guldhammer
We have 3 of the top 4 riders here, but where is Nibali? If this group stays away his podium place might start to slip away. The pace is clearly high as these riders get up to Ricco and Eastman. Not only that but the two B&O riders can’t quite hold the pace and they start to slip backwards.
The two leaders and the chase group of former breakaway riders had come together but now the same two riders attack away again – Oste MacDonald and Libert. There are only 5km of climbing to go for them.
And now we have an absolute disaster! Guldhammer suffers a puncture just as he is about to be caught by the peloton! The group speeds past him and he is now behind in one of the many groups which have been shelled out the back. His 11th place is suddenly looking seriously endangered.
Tenorio is setting the pace in his elite group now. He causes Eastman and Plaza to lose contact, leaving just Ricco, Contador and Machado with him.
Kern now leads the chase group up to catch the two leaders who had ridden away. Not only that but Teklehaimanot has been dropped.
With just a few kilometres to go, Contador puts in a big effort! Could this be the biggest challenge to Tenorio’s leadership thus far?
And he isn’t the only one attacking. Up front Libert puts in his third effort to strike out for the stage win. With 1.7km to go it is down to one of the break to win this and the Belgian is determined to make it him.
Contador has a 20 second gap as Tenorio chases after him!
Meanwhile behind Nibali and Uran go clear from the others. Plaza, Denifl, Eastman and Valverde aren’t far behind them. This group of favourites is really breaking up.
Up front Kern brings Libert back. Maillet is well placed just behind him for the sprint here.
Kern has a bit of a lead but Maillet is closing in on him.
But Kern holds on for a marvellous and unexpected victory. Maillet is just under a bike length behind him. So close, yet so far.
Kvasina is third, Pardilla is fourth, Libert fifth and Oste-MacDonald is sixth rounding out the break.
But everyone is looking at the race behind for GC time! Tenorio gets a gap on Machado and Ricco and sets off after Contador under the kite!
And Contador sprints past the dropped Teklehaimanot and he still has a good gap over Tenorio.
And he comes to the line 1’03” after the break finish. So what will his gap be?
Tenorio limits his loss to 19 seconds, but that will surely be concerning to him with one more mountain finish to come, and that stage is much harder than this one. Teklehaimanot comes through just behind the race leader for ninth place.
Ricco and Machado are caught by Nibali and Uran and they come through 1’42” behind the winners. That’s 39” behind Contador and 20” behind Tenorio.
Finally, another 31” later Denifl, Schleck and Lopez Garcia come through.
And these guys are given a 13” gap over a bunch of riders containing most of the other favourites. Finally, Guldhammer’s puncture causes him to come in 4’06” behind the race winner, which is 1’40” down on this big group.
So today really did produce some decent gaps as well as the first serious challenge to the race leadership. Tenorio’s overall lead is now at 1’14” to fellow Spaniard Contador. Uran moves into 5th ahead of Denifl. Schleck overtakes Martin to move into 8th. As for the mountain jersey thanks to the finishing order Kvasina and Oste-MacDonald are actually tied on 48 points!
