Finally we get to the second of the serious mountain stages in this race. Our current race leader Tenorio won there last time and will be hoping for a repeat today. But where Sierra Nevada was long and not particularly steep, this is the opposite – it is only 5.1km long but it averages 8% and has a long section which is just a touch under 10%. The stage is only 113km long, however, so the riders may not be particularly tired by the end of it.
We start today with a category 3 climb – the Collado de Foradada. This clearly inspires some of the second and third tier climbers as our first attack is from Dmirtri Medvedev.
With the climb lots of others are keen to get away. Other attackers are:
Tom Diggle
Philip Deignan
Jocelin Maillet
Wilco Kelderman (28 mountain points)
Moises Dueñas (+12’15”)
Daniel Teklehaimanot
Amael Moinard
Thomas Peterson
Jonathon Castroviejo
Max Oste-MacDonald
Remarkably the peloton allows this group of 11 to go away. The last two form a chase group behind the other 9. It contains a number of solid climbers who could be dangerous for the stage win here. Deignan leads them over the top – Kelderman couldn’t attack as he only joined the first attackers right at the summit. Maillet is second and Medvedev is third.
Kelderman is unhappy with the size of the group and he tries to attack away. The other riders are happy enough to work together though and they do bring him back. But no attention is on this as we receive news that the peloton have split over the top!
43 riders go clear and a 2 minute gap goes out. Some riders drop back because it seems some leaders have missed this early split. But who is here? Let’s have a look:
The gap starts to go out to 2 minutes to the second peloton. Santander obviously do most of the work up the front but they receive some help from Kern and Klemme.
The break goes through the sprint point with 88km to go and they have only 46” over the first peloton. Clearly the pace is high. But the gap that people really want to know is the gap to the second bunch... which is at 1’56”! The chase is looking organised with Prio-Porto doing a lot of work, with Vesuvio, Milka and Pendleton’s also pitching in.
Up front they realise that this is quite a sizable gap and more teams start to pitch in with the few domestiques here. And it isn’t just the domestiques working either – the early break are in fact pulled in by none other than Valverde.
The gap between the two bunches is now at 1’36” but closing that down is proving difficult. Regardless, three of the riders who were in the earlier move attack away again, determined to make something of today. They are:
Moises Dueñas
Dmirtri Medvedev
Philip Deignan
But with 75km remaining on this stage, almost half way through, the two main groups come together – Girardi put in the final pull that managed to do it. So no favourites are going to lose time on that basis alone.
What this whole chase did cause, however, was a group of 10 domestiques to fall off the back of the second pack. They are a long way back already and may have to start worrying about the time limit. Sinner, the lead-out for Guerao is the biggest name in there.
We approach the 2nd category climb now. It is an odd climb in that it comes in two distinct parts - the first is about 6km long and averages around 6%, then there is a few kilometres of false flat and finally we get a 4km 5% climb to the finish. There are also some foothills before it all starts. In fact on the final little hill before this we get an attack from the peloton! Three riders shoot away:
Martin Hacecky (19th)
Alejandro Valverde (21st)
Dominik Nerz (11th)
These 3 have a gap of 4’30” to cross if they want to get to the three leading riders. They start to come across the gap at a fair pace, so more riders decide to try their luck on the first part of the next climb:
Ian Bibby
Yevgeni Nepomnyachsniy
Tyler Brandt
Fabio Duarte (18th)
However, Rolland is on the case and he stops this attack from getting away. His chasing in fact sets a high enough pace that a 40 man autobus forms behind the bunch.
We hit the false flat and Paolo Scarponi now puts in an attack. Bibby decides to follow him. These two get a small gap together before Nepomnyachsniy decides to launch his own effort.
As Dueñas leads us over this summit we have the following situation:
44”
1’12”
42”
18”
2’56”
Break (3)
--->
Gr. Valverde (3)
--->
Gr. Bibby (2)
--->
Nepom.
--->
P (131)
We now have a technical descent where there are a few things of interest. The first thing is Nepomnyachsniy being caught by the bunch and a second thing is Grabovski falling off his bike. In addition Bibby and Scarponi catch the group of Valverde, Hacecky and Nerz to create a chase group of five. They are 43” behind the leaders and 1’20” ahead of the peloton.
It is now, as we enter the steady rise that takes us to the climb itself that we get our first big attack from a favourite – Tiago Machado launches an attack! He sits 4th overall 2’09” down on our leader.
Machado sets an incredible pace on this slope and almost as soon as the chase group catch our leaders, Machado does too! So now we have 9 riders with a lead of about 1’40” on the bunch.
With the 4th place Machado going up the road some of the other favourites see that they have to take matters into their own hands and so they attack away. 3rd placed Contador leads the attack and he is followed by:
Uran (8th)
Tenorio (1st)
Martin (10th)
That’s really going to change the dynamics of the race! With the race leader going up the road Santander aren’t going to contribute to the chase anymore. Seeing this several more favourites go now:
Schleck (6th)
Denifl (5th)
Sanchez (7th)
Nibali (2nd)
Plaza (12th)
Van der Hugenhaben (14th)
Guldhammer (15th)
We now hit a bit of a false flat and the chase behind starts to get organised. Bacardi are doing the bulk of the work for 9th overall Ricco. Pokerstars for Rujano (17th) and Heineken for Eastman (20th) are also contributing riders to this.
With 8km remaining the group of Tenorio catches up to the break. They have 39” on the other favourites and then another 36” back to the peloton, which is now reduced to 75 riders. The chase clearly isn’t quite working as well as they could be so Rujano and Ricco work together now to attack away. They quickly join the chase group.
Some of the riders up front are getting a bit twitchy. Duenas attacks and he is followed by Machado, Medvedev and Contador.
Uran controls this attack, stretching out this lead group in the process. There is now a 40” gap back to the second group on the road. Not wanting to be caught out again, Ricco puts in an attack, looking to shut things down.
With 5km remaining and the climb truly under way Contador puts in an attack. Machado follows him. Uran sits on the front of the group but he can’t quite shut them down through a section which has a gradient of over 9%.
Just as Ricco catchers up to this lead group, Rujano and Nibali work together to ensure that the chase group also comes up. This makes a leading group of 20 including most of the favourites which is just 10” behind Contador and Machado. Through this gradient, however, the group is looking incredibly stretched.
And all of Uran’s pressure does succeed in pulling 5 riders clear. Himself, Tenorio, Martin, Valverde and Medvedev get a gap on the rest of the group. Medvedev drops back when he realises that his leader Schleck hasn’t made the cut.
Denifl, Nibali and Ricco all set off in pursuit and this increase in pace succeeds in dropping off several riders who were in this group:
Van der Hugenhaben
Nerz
Hacecky
Bibby
Around the next bend we get four more riders dropping:
Deignan
Plaza
Duenas
Scarponi
So with 2km to the line we have the following situation:
9"
18"
14"
Machado
--->
Tenorio
--->
Nibali
--->
Rujano
Contador
Uran
Denifl
Medvedev
Valverde
Ricco
Schleck
Martin
Guldhammer
Sanchez
Tenorio now leads his group up and succeeds in catching the two leaders. Nibali, Ricco
Denifl is the next one after that, giving us 10 leaders now. Surprisingly Rujano also gets away from the group of Schleck and now joins the leaders.
But remarkably Schleck now succeeds in pulling his group up to the leaders just under the kite. We may not get any gaps at all today!
Uran is at the very front of the sprint, with Martin just behind him. The Irishman could be in for a great win here!
But what’s this? Schleck, along with Guldhammer and Sanchez, have been dropped again as soon as the sprint opened up.
But up front Tenorio and Machado are sprinting very well!
And Justo Tenorio wins it! What a show of dominance in a veryy unpredictable stage.
Contador takes a strong second, and he will like the bonus seconds to close the gap to Nibali. Uran also claims some bonus seconds with his third place. Machado holds enough speed here for fourth. Nibali is fifth ahead of Martin, who will probably just be happy to have finished in this group. Valverde claws some time back with his seventh. Rujano’s late effort to get into this group proves important as he finishes eighth. Meanwhile Denifl and Ricco round out this group and indeed the top 10.
46” later the group of Schleck comes in. That’s going to have quite an impact on the structure of the top 10.
And on a final note, of the 11 riders who were dropped early in the stage, 7 of them have been eliminated for missing the time cut. They are:
So looking at the GC now, things are fairly steady. Schleck drops from 6th to 9th, while Sanchez drops from 7th to 10th. Uran takes 6th, Ricco 7th and Martin will be pleasantly surprised with his current 8th. Lower down the order we have moves up most notably from Guldhammer (15th to 11th) and Rujano (17th to 15th). Nerz is the biggest loser today dropping from 11th to 16th.
