If yesterday shook up the GC for the first time, then today is just going to cause even more damage. We hit the mountains for the first time and what a way to do it! This is only 119km of riding today but we finish atop the Sierra Nevada. That’s a 28km climb with an average of 6.4% and a maximum of just under 10%. There’s only one steep ramp on the climb but it is constant almost the entire way to the top, so we should see riders gradually dropping off the entire way.
Today’s attacks are started by 9th overall Dmitri Grabovski. He is mostly a time trialist but he is a decent climber, so if he hits the climb ahead of the bunch he might be able to hold on to keep his top 10 spot for a little bit longer.
He is brought back as part of the early wave of attacks however, and there are a raft of riders trying to get away throughout the earliest parts of the stage:
Vegard Robinson Bugge (2nd mountain points)
Michal Kwiatkowski
Alex Dowsett (6 mountain points)
Oliver Zaugg
Matea Kvasina
José Antonio Redondo
Amael Moinard
Philip Deignan
Andre Vital
Peter Sagan
Ran Margaliot
Johannes Heider
Marcello Pavarin
Joost Posthuma (2nd overall)
Darwin Atapuma
Chris Froome
However as we go over the first difficulty of the day, a long uncategorised drag, our break forms. In it are:
Marcello Pavarin
Darwin Atapuma
José Antonio Redondo
Jelle Wallays
Michal Kwiatkowski
This is a rather interesting group of riders with a couple of decent climbers like Atapuma and Redondo in here. Certainly it is good to see the latter getting involved in his 5th Vuelta outing. Wallays is the best placed here 5’24” down on GC. He also has 6 mountain points, so could cause a bit of a threat in that category if the break goes on to win the stage.
A bit of a blow for Team B&O as Rasmus Guldhammer falls. He gets back in without any serious trouble but the thought will have to be lingering now – is he injured?
Up the first categorised climb of the day Atapuma leads the break. In fact he leads the entire way up. He takes the points at the top ahead of Kwiatkowski and Pavarin, but no one really tried to bring them in. Santander are doing all the work now and it is Ortega who leads the bunch over 4’21” behind.
Atapuma also rolls over at the intermediate sprint point. Nothing happens until we reach the base of the final climb, with the gap now down to just 2’46”. It is now that Konstantin Siutsou attacks!
So things have now well and truly kicked off. Santander are still doing the pacing. Meanwhile Siutsou gets a minute gap on the peloton with relative ease. Seeing his success three more riders attacks:
Tyler Brandt
David De la Fuente
Ian Bibby (7th overall)
Serrano decides to give these three a thirty second gap the holds the pace there. This doesn’t mean that things are slow – indeed with 24.5km to the finish a massive bunch of 72 riders is dropped. There are no important riders in here, mostly the usual sprinters and domestiques.
And another 20 riders are shelled out just 700 metres further up the road. This is already turning into the predicted war of attrition as we are down to 96 riders, including all of the favourites. Things are shredded still further as Petar Panayotov hits the front of the bunch, dropping another 19 riders.
Darwin Atapuma has been looking like the strongest rider all day and he continues to do most of the work up front. As the break hits the 20km to go mark we have the following situation:
45”
43”
33”
2’01”
Break (5)
--->
Siutsou
--->
Gr. Bibby (3)
--->
Peloton (67)
Jocelin Maillet is probably the most surprising rider dropped from the peloton thus far but with only 67 riders left and 20km still to climb something has to give soon.
With 16.8km to the summit Siutsou catches up to the break. They have a minute lead to the chasing group containing Bibby and then a further 26” on the peloton.
Not long after this we get one of the first important riders dropped and it isn’t a huge surprise. Joost Posthuma has done a great job thus far this race but his time has come and he fades off the back. So that’s the first of the top 10 riders out. And following straight after is 9th overall and the first attacker of today Dmirtri Grabovski. Rafael Valls is the one on the front doing all of the tough work to hurt the other riders.
There are 15.6km to the peak as Valls reels in the chase group of Bibby. The gap to the lead group has dropped under a minute.
With the gap dropping Marcello Pavarin decides that it is the right time to attack away from the rest of the break.
Everyone in the break except Wallays and, surprisingly, Siutsou follow him. Then Kwiatkowski and Atapuma attack away together, distancing the others. However, even these two stronger climbers couldn’t stay away and Valls brings the whole race together.
It is only a matter of time before we get another attack, however, as Domenik Nerz decides to go for it. In his wheel, however, is the far more important Justo Tenorio!
With the race leader behind him, however, Nerz doesn’t want to work and Tenorio decides to sit up too, perhaps content to just mark moves. His powerful team get back on the front now. There are 9km remaining and we are down to 43 riders in this lead group. Pierre Rolland, who sits 3rd overall thanks to his strong TT, is the next rider to drop out the back.
David Lopez Garcia is doing much of the work on the front now and just 2km later, with 7km remaining, the race is down to 31 riders. We have some far more serious riders dropping off the back now! Some of the names:
Christoph Mai
Mwangi Samwel
Tyler Brandt
Ian Bibby (7th)
Matthias Frank
Bibby went from looking really strong with his attack to clearly going too deep and losing time today. He will have to limit his losses if he wants to keep a chance of a top 20 alive.
And with 5.5km to the summit, in the only long steep section of this climb, we get the first serious favourite attacking – it is Riccardo Ricco! Perhaps he heard his manager complaining about not being aggressive enough this season?
This attack drops 7 more riders out the back and so we are left with a peloton of just 23. It is mostly team leaders but a few strong domestiques are still handing around. In this group are:
Tenorio, Valls, Lopez Garcia
T. Machado, Panayotov
Valverde, Van der Hugenhaben
Cobo, De la Fuente
Navarro
Schleck
Duarte
Contador
Uran
Denifl
Nibali
Nerz
Martin
Rujano
Sanchez
Guldhammer
Plaza
Eastman
Ricco now has a gap of 20”. With 4km to go we get our next attack. This time it is Contador!
Denifl attacks away as well and then it is Tenorio and Machado who attack up as well.
These four link up with Ricco but Tenorio sits up once he gets in that group and none of the others want to drag him away so the group stays together. A lot more riders have been dropped. The ones falling off the pace are:
Cobo, De la Fuente
Sanchez
Guldhammer
Plaza
Eastman
Navarro
Nerz
Van der Hugenhaben
Panayotov
That leaves just 14 riders left at the front of the race!
Rujano is the next one to attack, just 2000 metres from the top. He is joined by Nibali and Uran.
Tenorio pulls on the front to keep this together, having used up his domestiques. But his pace, while it does catch the attackers, also unhitches a few more riders:
Lopez Garcia
Duarte
Martin
Under the kite and we can see the front group is dangerously stretched. Rujano is in the safest position as he opens the sprint, but he just attacked so how much has he got left?
Nibali and Tenorio are on either side of him on the final bend.
Denifl, Ricco and Schleck are being distanced slightly!
As Rujano quickly fades, Tenorio hits the front. He has conserved a lot of energy, can he take this?
Yes he can! Justo Tenorio wins his first ever Vuelta stage! Best of all, he records an 8” gap over the rest of the group behind him!
Nibali is second, taking the 12 bonus seconds. The 8 bonus seconds for third go to Machado, who finished very quickly. Contador takes fourth place on the stage and will be happy with that given that he spent some energy on an earlier attack. Rujano dropped to fifth place but will be glad to be in the front group here. Valverde is another one who will be pleased to be in this group and takes some valuable points with his sixth place finish. Uran had a great day yesterday and continues to make up time on others with his seventh.
Another 15 seconds back, 23” off the time of Tenorio we get a group of three riders - Denifl, Ricco and Schleck, who cross the line in that order to round out the top 10. While it isn’t a huge time loss it will certainly be a mental blow to them.
Valls comes in 39” later as the best domestique of the day. In fact his teammate Lopez Garcia is in 12th leading in Duarte and Martin. This group is 58” down today. Both of these Santander riders could well be thinking of their own top 20 possibilities.
And with that the first mountain stage of the race concludes. While there were no killer blows landed we get a real shake-up of the race and an idea of who is climbing well. Justo Tenorio slightly extends his lead on GC and now has just a touch over a minute on second place Nibali. There is still plenty of opportunity for change as only 1’26” separate 4th place Machado from 12th place Ricco. Tenorio also takes over the points competition and his team obviously now have already taken a dominant lead in the team competition. So this is already shaping up to potentially be the race that Santander need to save themselves from relegation.
