Yesterday saw some drama on the final hill for some GC riders. The course today isn’t likely to shake up GC too much, though with a fairly strong wind forecast for the whole day anything is possible. If yesterday’s stage was a fairly typical hilly Vuelta stage, today is a fairly typical Vuelta flat stage – that is to say, not very flat at all. There are a first, second and third category climb out on course, which may make some sprinters struggle. But it also means that Bassirou Konte is likely to lose his mountain jersey unless he can get in the break today as well.
The first attack today comes from Peter Kennaugh, who was dropped fairly early in yesterday’s stage and as such is 12’34” down.
He is joined by:
Amael Moinard
Damiano Caruso
Wilco Kelderman
Peter Sagan
Jose Mendes
They get a short lead but with yesterday’s winner Caruso in the break (who is only 8” down on GC), as well as a number of other strong puncheurs, this is too dangerous to go and as such Welle Jallays makes the catch. Bauke Mollema and Brent Bookwalter help him out to keep the pace high. It is interesting to see some of the teams with sprinters doing the work – they are clearly confident about today.
The next attack is deemed acceptable and forms our break of the day:
Michael Faerk Christensen (+15’02”)
Vegard Robinson Bugge (+30”)
Jose Mendes (+16”)
Wilco Kelderman (+12’32”)
The sprint bonus seconds won’t be enough to overhaul GC so Mendes isn’t quite the danger he appears to be, unless the break go on to win, which on this course is entirely possible. Speaking of sprint points, the first one is slightly uphill, right near the base of the third category climb. Bugge wins this ahead of Mendes, while Kelderman just rolls over for this place, given the fact that he is much further back in GC.
Of a maximum 32 points on offer today, 6 of them are at the summit of this climb, which would be enough to draw even with Konte’s lead. Kelderman launches the first attack, while all the riders stick to his wheel. Everyone is interested in this one.
Kelderman is forced to knock off the pace a bit, so Bugge launches the next attack. But he can’t outdo Mendes, who takes the maximum at the summit. Bugge gets second and Kelderman’s enthusiasm only nets him third. They now have a lead of 8’27” over the peloton.
We now descend down to the second sprint point and here Mendes makes up for his earlier missed effort, taking the maximum bonus seconds ahead of Bugge. With the 10 bonus seconds earned today, Mendes will move up to 6th overall if he finishes with the bunch, which would provide valuable publicity for the Portuguese team.
Race radios erupt as crucial news arrives in – Frank Schleck has taken a fall! He gets up without any obvious problems and he gets into the bunch just fine, but the thought must now be lingering in his manager’s head – is he injured?
We have the Vuelta’s usual rolling terrain before the final two climbs and it is here that Wikipedia, Pokerstars and Festina start to work together. They are working for Goss, Holloway and Guerao respectively and clearly think their sprinters are capable of sticking with this one.
With 53km remaining the break reach the base of today’s first category climb, the Puerto del Espino, which is a fairly reasonable 5% gradient the whole way up and hasn’t got any real spikes in gradient. Their lead is down to 3’52” already and they may struggle to extend it over this terrain.
Back in the pack the first rider is dropped – Rafel Majka. The young Polish rider crashed yesterday and it has clearly affected him today. He may rely on the fans to push him up.
There are 16 mountain points on offer at the top and thus the winner here is likely to wear the jersey on the podium after today’s stage. The first to attack is the man who won the earlier mountain prime – Mendes.
And Bugge comes around him this time, taking the maximum. Mendes just beats Kelderman to the line to take second place, but Bugge now leads him 20 points to 18 with one 10 point climb still to come.
Christensen comes over 44” later, but he rejoins on the descent. The leaders have a 2’48” gap over the peloton, which is now reduced to 191 riders – but who is missing? Perhaps unsurprisingly it is Michael Vanderaerden, who is not a noted climber of hills. Pereyra, Hirschlein and Libert all wait for him to make sure he can get over the remaining hill and to the finish.
Jocelyn Bar falls on the descent but perhaps more importantly Domenik Klemme suffers a puncture. He is 10th overall and, while he isn’t going to be in the fight for GC overall, the position still is valuable.
Both of them get back as the final climb starts, however. The gap to the break is 2’37”, with 33km remaining. Up front there are only 3 riders left, as Christensen unhitches for good. This was always going to be a tough stage for him.
This climb is much steeper than the previous one and as such it suits Mendes much more. As such he easily takes the points at the summit. Bugge manages second with Kelderman once again third. This ties Mendes and Bugge up on 28 points apiece. Mendes will wear the jersey tomorrow based on winning two summits over Bugge’s one.
But so convincing is the attack of Mendes that he just continues with it. He pulls out 25” over the top on the other two breakaway riders. Project 1t4i lead the peloton over the climb. Most of the sprinters are still here in the 174 man group, though Lotto’s backup sprinter Maciej Ulanowski and Jon Aberasturi are both dropped.
The gap through the entire descent holds steady at 1’15” to Mendes. The breakaway are about 20” behind him.
The peloton come down and start to get buffeted by coastal winds. Pokerstars have taken up the pace for Dan Holloway. Confusingly, Welle Jallays and Jelle Wallays are the two riders doing most of the work. With 7km left the gap is down to 34” and the two chasers have been caught.
The high speed of the pack together with these strong cross-winds are causing difficulties at the back and gaps are starting to open up. There is no chance to get information about who is back here, so we will have to see what happens and they will have to hope that they can hang on until the finish!
With 3.4km to go Pokerstars have set up their train but it is notably missing one of their key riders – John Degenkolb was initially leading out for Dan Holloway but the wind hurt him and he has been forced to sit up somewhat.
So the train at the moment is:
Jelle Wallays
Dan Holloway
Michael Van Stayen
Alejandro Valverde
Julien Simon
Most of the sprinters appear to have been really struggling, given riders like Simon a real chance. Not only that but Valverde is here to sprint for bonus seconds! A third place on the stage would draw him level on time with Joost Posthuma and it would come down to fractions of a second from the time trial! But the gap is still sitting at 16” to Mendes.
Simon comes out of the wheel of Valverde and moves to the right. Posthuma gets into his wheel and looks like he is about to sprint! Is he going for bonus seconds himself? Bibby gets on his back wheel meanwhile on the right there’s a Festina rider... but it isn’t Guerao. It is Mollema, who seems intent on fighting this out too.
Wallays seemed to be starting his lead-out but now with 1.8km remaining he takes a chance and jumps onto Simon’s back wheel, putting Holloway in a more comfortable position and bumping Posthuma out as quickly as he got there. This leaves Van Stayen with no lead-out but he has a train of his own behind him:
Van Stayen
Valverde
Guldhammer
Merino Criado
Impey
Wallays has to peel off, leaving Holloway to close the gap to Simon. Van Stayen now manages to muscle his way on to Holloway’s wheel, keeping himself out of the wind much more. The gap to Mendes also seems to finally be closing.
Simon has spent too long in the wind and just as he is about to catch Mendes he has to peel off, with about 1100 metres to go. Holloway opens up and Van Stayen starts to look to come around him.
It is down to Van Stayen and Holloway, who can take this?
With 500 metres to go, Van Stayen goes clear!
Simon is doing well in third, but Valverde is challenging. If Simon takes third he will defend his team’s leader’s jersey while if Valverde takes it there is a chance he could become the new leader.
But before that, Michael Van Stayen adds to his total of Vuelta stage wins – this is his 3rd Vuelta stage in his career!
Dan Holloway will have to be content with a second place on the stage. But everyone is watching for third place... and it is Alejandro Valverde!
Julien Simon faded a lot, and ended up in 12th. Fourth place went to a surprising Rasmus Guldhammer. His teammate Domenik Klemme recovered from his earlier puncheur to take fifth. Daniel Martin is in sixth with Ian Bibby in seventh. David de la Fuente, Luis Leon Sanchez and Ruben Plaza ensure another three Spaniards in the top ten.
But where were the other sprinters? We get an answer as Guerao leads in the second group on the road. This was just too hard for most of the pure sprinters. The climbs took their toll and then the fast pace through the high winds was the final straw.
But now the real question is this – who is our new leader? The judges consult the time trial results, counting back to fractions of a second... and they judge that the current race leader is...
Spoiler
2011 Vuelta winner Alejandro Valverde!
In addition to this, the mountain jersey will be worn by Jose Mendes, who is on the same number of points as Vegard Robinson Bugge. Alejandro Valverde takes over the points competition and if he manages some more sprint results then he could well find himself being competitive there.
