Some would call this a typical day in the Vuelta – a slightly bump course all day before a short wall which should decide the stage. That wall today is the Vejer de la Frontera. It is 2.4km in length and averages 6.6%, while maxing out at just under 10%. The whole stage is a fairly long 197km and does have some minor difficulties along the way, most of them uncategorised.
The attacking is started by Christophe Kern. He is a rather good climber and it seems that will set the standard for the other early attackers.
There are a number of waves of early attackers, and the names trying to get away this morning are:
Petar Panayotov
Jaroslav Kulhavy
Artem Topchanuk
Jonathon Castroviejo
Michal Kwiatkowski
Paolo Scarponi
Valerio Agnoli
Nelson Oliveira
Fabio Felline
Philip Deignan
Tyler Brandt
Fabio Duarte
Chiaffredo Grippo
Simon Zahner
Arnold Jeannesson
Johannes Heider
Moises Dueñas
Mikel Landa
There are a lot of really interesting names here, most notably Panayotov, Scarponi and Duarte, all of whom could be aiming for decent GC positions overall. However, through these attacks order is kept primarily by Matea Kvasina and Sergio Ortega, with the later particularly notable for his hard work at this point.
Eventually a group does get away though and most of the riders in it haven’t attacked thus far:
Valerio Agnoli
Ryan Eastman
Dominique Nerz
Chiaffredo Grippo
Bassirou Konte
Florian Morizot
Andre Vital
So this would be a normal break in most races but Eastman sticks out like a sore thumb. Why is he here? Either he lacks any faith in his ability to hold on to the lead group on the final hill (which is probably his biggest weakness as a GC rider) or he is looking for the time bonuses from the two sprint points out on course. Regardless, he is 43rd overall, 21” down on GC, and that means that those bonus seconds wouldn’t be enough for him to overtake Joost Posthuma’s overall lead.
So we come to the first of those two sprint points and it is remarkably close. Eastman looks really strong but at the last second Konte comes around him to take the 6”, leaving Eastman with only 4”. So if that was his plan it is already coming apart. Vital takes third place and the gap over the peloton is out to 6’37”.
Another possibility for today is that Eastman is chasing after the mountain jersey in this race. There are 6 points on offer at the mid-stage climb and the same at the end of the stage and the race judges have ruled that whoever takes the first points will wear the jersey overnight. Indeed Eastman fights for these points hard but once again he is pipped to the line by Konte, who will surely be incredibly happy to be one of the first Africans to make their mark on this race. Grippo is third this time. The pace in the peloton has clearly been increased because with 66km to go the gap is at 3’42”.
As mentioned at the start the stage is constantly rolling up-and-down all day and that results in some really tired legs. Project 1t4i have a fairly good classics team here and so as they push a hard pace over the uncategorised climbs it is only a matter of time before a group is shelled out the back. And indeed a group of 24 riders goes out.
There are no important GC riders here, mostly domestiques and sprinters, but it shows just how high the pace is today. However, it is the next group of 7 to drop which is far more interesting. It includes the following names:
Mattia Cattaneo
Thomas Peterson
Mattia Pozzo
Jackson Rodriguez
Mattia Cattaneo in particular may surprise some. He has already been hailed as the next Cunego by some, but if he rides like this throughout the rest of his career then he is going to struggle to even be remotely competitive in a Grand Tour.
Up front they are at the second sprint point and this is even closer than the first, with the riders fanned across the road almost in a line. Eastman is beaten to the line for the third straight time, but this time it is Grippo who beats him. Agnoli is third. The hard work of the break seems to be coming to nought, however, as their lead is only at 1’29” ahead of the 130 man peloton.
But with only 130 men left in the peloton that means that more riders must have been dropped! The pace of Project 1t4i has unhitched another 30 riders and this group also has some really surprising names in it. Some of the riders here are:
Rafael Serrano
Juan Carlos Rienda Segura
Dmitri Medvedev
Jude Libert
Marcello Pavarin
Arnold Jeannesson
Max Oste-MacDonald
Aitor Hernández Gutierrez
Pavarin in particular is hard to figure out. This is an idea stage for someone like him, and yet he has fallen back a long way. Perhaps he is saving himself for a breakaway later in the race? It is also worth noting the number of Santander riders here, which implies that the team classification might not be the cake-walk that some would think.
With the gap to the break sitting at only a minute with 35km still to go, it is only a matter of time before they stop working well together. Having already won the KOM for today Konte decides that he will be the first to put in an attack. Agnoli follows straight onto his wheel and, perhaps hoping that this attack will go all the way, Eastman continues his baffling attack.
It is Nerz who brings these three back to the rest of the break. But the genie has been uncorked now and so Grippo launches an attack. Eastman bridges up to him, but Konte, showing his great strength, pulls the rest of the break up to them.
Konte and Nerz try next but Eastman stops this in its tracks by bringing them back. The gap is now at 52” with 28km to go, meaning that all the attacks have kept things pretty steady. Grippo now puts in his bid for the line.
But Eastman appears to be in time trial mode, bringing this attack back as well. Konte puts in a brief attack but this is all for nothing as the peloton reigns it all back in. Wesley Kreder makes the catch, showing that his team are still very visible on the front. They have been receiving scattered assistance from some, including Alejandro Valverde, who perhaps did a turn because most of his team had been dropped and he wanted to toughen things up for his rivals. The bunch is now down to 109 riders, Matthias Frank being the latest high-profile rider to drop. This race has been exactly like an Ardennes classic.
There is an uncategorised climb 14km from the finish line and it is here where we find out why Alejandro Valverde was working – he launches an attack! Following on his wheel is top Pro Continental puncheur Chris Froome.
And now we get another odd moment in this stage – Luis Leon Sanchez attacks across the gap with a number of other riders on his wheel:
Jelle Vanendert
Frank Schleck
Juan Jose Cobo
Damiano Caruso
So maybe Project 1t4i weren’t working for the race leader after all, but rather the 2nd placed overall Sanchez? That is certainly a terrific example of playing all your cards!
This group gets a 30” gap from the bunch, and Domenik Klemme bridges up to them, giving a lead group of eight. Of course with some of the GC names in here, particularly Schleck, it was always going to be risky and so Chris Anker Sørensen brings it back for his leader Alberto Contador.
Just as the group is about to be shut down Klemme attacks away again with Caruso and Vanendert following. Remember that particularly Vanendert is well-placed on GC, having lead yesterday for some time.
With only 3.5km remaining and about a kilometre to the final climb Vanendert attacks away from this trio and he gets a gap. Klemme follows at a distance while Caruso can’t see this going anywhere and he sits up.
As the final climb starts Vanendert has a 9” gap on Klemme and another 20” on the 114 man peloton.
The peloton gets to the second turn of the climb, just under 2km from the finish and Ben Gastauer launches an attack, followed by Peter Sagan.
Meanwhile up front Klemme pulls himself up to Vanendert and without even pausing for thought he attacks away.
The focus changes to the helicopter camera briefly as news arrives of a crash at the back of the peloton. It includes two riders from today’s break! Those caught up in it are:
Wout Poels
Wes Sulzberger
Rafel Majka
Chiaffredo Grippo
Bassirou Konte
No time to really think about that, however. A Koenigsegg rider has attacked but it isn’t Alejandro Valverde this time, it is Robin van der Hugenhaben! He is followed by Damiano Caruso, who tried earlier as well.
These two close the gap to Gastauer and Sagan. Vanendert has managed to pull himself up to Klemme and is moving fast here. It is really close between the six attackers under the kite.
Caruso is up to the lead two with 700 metres to the line. He is moving quickly and could ruin the party of these other two attackers.
And he is through with 300 metres to the line!
Damiano Caruso raises his arms in a well-earned victory salute. This is his first ever grand tour stage win and it was a memorable one to be sure!
Jelle Vanendert holds on for second, being incredibly close to taking a memorable victory of his own. Domenik Klemme is in third and would have also sorely loved a victory given his team’s lack of a top leader here. Ben Gastauer is the next best of the second group of attackers, followed by Robin van der Hugenhaben and Peter Sagan. Frank Schleck leads in the rest of the pack on the same time as the winner today. Riccardo Ricco, Chris Froome and Alejandro Valverde round out the top ten and Joost Posthuma is here, keeping his jersey safe.
But this isn’t the whole pack! It seems the peloton broke in half under the kite!
This second group of 40 riders comes in 2’29” behind the winner today, and it seems like some important GC riders are in here!
Ryan Eastman is here after his long day in the break, clearly having used up too much energy. That will teach him a lesson. Fabio Duarte is here, continuing his rocky season. Jose Rujano is also here, not wholly surprising given his aversion to all but the longest climbs. But Rigoberto Uran, while not a complete surprise, was considered at least a top 5 contender before the race and now finds himself a long way down! Other riders in here include:
Petar Panayatov
Martin Hacecky
Jack Bobridge (10th overall)
Domenik Nerz
Hubert Schwab
Jocelin Maillet
So not a lot of change in the current GC, even if some of the main contenders lost time today. Bassirou Konte will be pleased to wear the mountain jersey for at least a day. Damiano Caruso will don the points jersey, though he is tied with Joost Posthuma. Justo Tenorio keeps his hold on the young rider jersey.
