The race today starts with a 7.3km time trial around Granada. There would normally be nothing particularly exciting about starting with a time trial but this time there is a major difference – there is a 1.5km climb just before the first checkpoint which averages 6% and maxes out at 10%. So the first wearer of the red jersey may not in fact be a pure time trialist, but rather someone who can climb fairly well too. Justo Tenorio, Rigoberto Uran and Vincenzo Nibali top the lists of most bookmakers here, so we could already see a big blow in the GC battle.
And as Mario Vogt leaves the start house the second GT of the season is underway! The very young German is actually a fairly decent puncheur so the first half of the course should be to his liking. His time through the first check is 6’26”.
And his finishing time is 11’34”. That is a rather long time to cover 7.3km, so it is possible that we may see some decent time gaps opened up today, particularly for those who can’t climb.
The pleasingly named Sten Stenersen is here to start his 2nd Vuelta. As can be seen he is the Norwegian TT champion and so he should give us a decent idea of how the TT specialists will fare today. His time through the first check is a new best of 6’21”, notably only 5” faster than Vogt.
But he really does extend that lead in the second half of the course with a new best of 11’21”. Not long after him Konstantin Siutsou comes out on course. He is more of a puncheur but can TT decently well. He sets a new best of 6’19” at the first check but he loses some time on the flat and ends up 2nd on the same time as Stenersen.
The first of the riders riding for a high GC spot heads off in the form of Paolo Scarponi. He really isn’t much of a time trialist, and his ability up the hills is limited, but he will be looking to limit his losses today to see if a top 20 spot overall is possible. His time through the first check is 6’23”, which is just outside the time of Stenersen.
His time at the end is 11’24”, just 3” down on our current leader. That will probably be considered acceptable for him and certainly avoids any sort of disaster.
The next rider to really give it a good effort is Jelle Vanendert. The Belgian is most certainly a puncheur by trade but he has enough ability against the clock to avoid losing too much time. In fact it looks like things are very much going in his favour as his time through the first check is easily a new best – 6’13”.
And he manages to hold onto most of his lead to the finish and sets a new best time of 11’15”. That seems quite strong and puts him ahead by 6”.
The next serious contender out is, if anything, the opposite of our new leader. Andrew Tennant represents his wildcard team and has a great ability in regular prologues. His climbing isn’t great, but it is much better than most TT specialists. Nevertheless, he loses time on the first part of the course, with a time of 6’20”, 7” down on Vanendert.
He pulls back some time in the second part of the course, but it isn’t enough as he comes through provisionally 2nd place in 11’17”. This shows that in fact puncheurs may be able to make up enough time in the first half of the course to hold on against the better time trialists on the flat.
New signing at Santander Gustavo Veloso is next out on course. Though he isn’t really considered a favourite for the day, he goes through the first check with the second best time of 6’17”. That’s just 4” down on Vanendert. Clearly he is on a good day, so can he pull something out here?
Remarkably, he does! He sets a new best of 11’13” and provides what will have to go down as one of the more memorable results in his career.
As a puncheur Robin van der Hugenhaben needs no introduction, but sometimes it is forgotten that he is almost as good as a climber and overall GC man. He has numerous top 30 finishes in Grand Tours. Showing that once again he is serious about his chances in this race, he blazes up the first climb and sets a provisional best of 6’11”. Veloso might find his glory short-lived.
And indeed he does. Van der Hugenhaben loses a fair bit of time in the second half of the course but he still comes through 1” faster than the Spaniard and sets a new best of 11’12”.
But a big threat to his lead materialises soon after - Joost Posthuma. The double Dutch champion is a superb TT rider but also can climb fairly well, so could be a big chance in this stage. And he shows his quality by actually beating van der Hugenhaben up the first section’s climb – he has a new best there of 6’09”. Perhaps he was able to gain a few seconds in the earliest part of the course before the climb started?
And what a time! Posthuma sets our new best time of 10’59”, a whole 13” better than the previous leader. That could well be a tough time to beat.
Jose Rujano sets off to begin his fight for the Giro top 10. He isn’t the best TT rider but should still avoid losing too much time today. And indeed his time of 6’20” doesn’t exactly set the world alight.
And his finishing time is little better with an effort of only 11’21”, which is provisionally 18th but there are plenty of riders to come.
The next important rider out is one who could well do something today. Dan Craven is another great mix of puncheur and time trialist – strong at both but not strong enough to win at one or the other. This combination should suit him well. Indeed his time at the first check is 6’10”, just 1” slower than Posthuma!
But Craven loses something in the flatter final section and comes in 2nd, with a time of 11’10”. That means that he lost a whole 10” to Posthuma in that final part of the course. Clearly the Dutchman has an amazing time here.
Our next GC contender out is Stefan Denifl. The Austrian should do well on the first half of the course but may struggle on the second part. And indeed his first time matches Craven, 6’10”.
But remarkably he actually gains time on Craven here and moves into second place provisionally with a time of 11’08”. He will certainly be happy with that result.
The Jaguar team leader Ian Bibby has been in tremendous form of late and is likely to come here in high spirits. He is a brilliant all-rounder so should enjoy this course. Unfortunately though, it looks like nerves get the better of him at first and he can only manage 6’16” at the first check, provisionally 9th. He will have to pick up the pace from here.
And it certainly seems that he did just that as he finishes the course in 11’14”, good enough to hold 7th for the moment. He will be happy with that but will wonder what could have happened with a better first half.
Simply Red Bull don’t have a GC leader here so if Jack Bobridge could get a strong result here they would appreciate the points haul. He is another strong TT/puncheur combination and thus should do well. He is also the last rider who could challenge our current leader until the big GC favourites come out. His time through the first check is a strong 6’13”, which is the same that Vanendert managed earlier.
And he finishes with 11’10”, which is good enough for 3rd provisionally. This is the sort of stage that the young Australian could win one day, so keep an eye out for him in the future.
So now we come to the final 15 GC riders, and as such let’s have a look at the top 10 at both time checks as they currently stand:

So onto the first of the final raft of GC favourites. Rasmus Guldhammer isn’t a particularly good TT rider but might be able to save some time on the hill. His first check is 6’18”, however, which puts him 20th on the provisional clock. He might find himself losing more time than he really can afford today.
And his final time is really quite poor, as he can only manage 11’23”, putting him amongst most of the general domestiques. He may find himself having to attack later on, even if only to get some seconds back later.
Juan Jose Cobo is up next. He can TT better than some and is a better puncheur than most of his rivals. He will certainly need whatever scant time he can manage today as he may risk losing some seconds in the mountains. His first time is a great 6’09”, putting him provisional second with the same time as Posthuma. Could he manage to overhaul him?
Not quite, as he comes through in 11’10”, just between Bobridge and Craven. That is a fantastic time.
The Irish TT champion Daniel Martin is up next. He is a really good puncheur but a less-than-brilliant TT rider. So we can probably expect a strong first half and then a weaker second half. His first check is indeed strong as he gets a time of 6’13”. That’s good enough for 7th at the moment.
And as expected he drops off slightly with a time of 11’15”, which is a decent effort for him and keeps the top 10 well within his sights.
The 21-year-old Ryan Eastman is the next GC contender out. He is decent against the clock but may well struggle on the hilly stuff. Indeed at the first check he can only manage a provisional 23rd place with a time of 6’18”.
And in fact things only get worse from here as he can only manage a time of 11’19” overall. Those lost seconds won’t lose him the race but no one wants to be on the back foot from the start.
As was mentioned before the race Ruben Plaza won the prologue in the 2009 Vuelta. He isn’t as fast as he was back then but can he put in a top showing here? His time through the first check is a solid 6’13”, good enough for 7th at the moment.
And he comes through in 11’10”, good enough for a provisional 3rd! Clearly he will have to be someone to watch in the later time tests.
Fabio Duarte is a strong rider against the clock but his big weakness are hills. He needs to make up time in these sorts of trials though because the hilly road stages will really hurt him. His first check is a paltry 6’19”, however, and so he has a lot of work to do.
But things don’t get any better and he comes through in 11’22”, putting him a fair way back already.
The 2011 Vuelta champion Alejandro Valverde is next out of the start house. Though he isn’t quite what he used to be against the clock, he is still a fantastic puncheur and should love this course. Not only that but the home crowds will be spurring him on to try his hardest. And WOW he comes through the first check in a new best of 6’04”. That’s 5” faster than Posthuma’s previous best!
But it just isn’t good enough, as he comes through the finish in a time of 11’06” for provisional second place. That means that he lost 16” to the Dutchman in the final part of the course.
The next rider up is another Vuelta veteran, this being his fifth time here. Luis Leon Sanchez is a great all-rounder and will really love this course. Indeed if you thought that Valverde was quick through the first check, Sanchez manages to shave another 2” off his first time with a new best of 6’02”. Could he be the one to beat his own teammate’s time of 10’59”?
10’57”... 10’58”... 10’59”! But wait he is just behind Posthuma by under a second! So Sanchez goes into second place behind his teammate with a time of 10’59”
Riccardo Ricco, 2012 Giro winner, is another great puncheur who will like this course. He isn’t too good against the clock but should still be able to avoid massive time losses at the end. And his first time is 6’09”, good enough for provisional 6th at the time check.
And his final time is a solid 11’13”, 12th at the moment and within sight of his other rivals for the podium.
If you had to name a brilliant all-round GC rider one of the first names in your head would have to be Vincenzo Nibali, who has an almost perfect balance of climbing, paunchiness and TT ability. As such he will find a lot to like in this course. His first time is a great 6’06”, putting him provisionally 6th. Can he avoid some of the time loss that others have experienced in the second half of the course?
And he does indeed as he holds on to his 3rd place with a time of 11’02”, only 3” off the best.
Tiago Machado might fly under the radar of some predicting a GC podium, but he is arguably the best climber in this race. He lacks just a little bit against the clock compared to some of his other contenders but other than that he is a great rider for this sort of race. His first check’s time is 6’12”, already dropping 6” on the likes of Nibali.
And Machado loses a touch more time before the finish as he comes through in 11’15”. That’s 19th at the moment but with 4 more riders still to come he could fade even further down the list. He will be forced to attack now to make up even that small difference.
Rigoberto Uran is a great time trialist and a great mountain climber, but struggles most on these short and sharp climbs. So we can probably expect him to lose a bit of time in the first section and to make it back up towards the end of the course. A time of 6’11” at the first check is a solid time, provisionally 14th.
And on the descent and flat section, Uran does indeed increase his speed, coming through in 11’10”, good enough for 6th place at the line now.
And now for a man whose credentials as a puncheur need no introduction - Frank Schleck. Certainly one of the best riders here over the hills, he will love the first part of the course, but he will certainly not like the second half. His time of 6’03” at the first check is good enough for 2nd, only 1” off the first check time of Sanchez.
And he manages to ride the second half incredibly well, coming through with the 4th best time of 11’05”. He will be really happy with that and it certainly indicates good things for the rolling time trial later in the race.
And now we come to one of the other big favourites for the day, Alberto Contador. He really will be wanting to get his race off to a good start and will love this sort of course. His first check is the 5th best time thus far, 6’06”.
And he finishes the course with the same time as Schleck, 11’05”, but is placed just in front of him in the provisional standings.
And now one of the riders most hotly tipped to win the stage today – Justo Tenorio. Remember the time to beat is 10’59”. Obviously Tenorio is known as a great TT rider, and he is the national champion of Spain in that discipline, but he is also better on the hills than Posthuma, so could make up some ground there. And his first check time is 6’06”, the same as Contador! This puts him 3” ahead of the Dutch rider already, can he hold onto that gap?
No! His time of 11’02” is just short, good enough for third, and that means that the first wearer of the red jersey is Joost Posthuma! Can he hold onto it during tomorrows’ hilly stage?
