It's a lumpy sort of basque stage awaiting the riders on stage 15 and with the section of decisive mountain stages to come this has to be classic breakaway territory.
As you may expect we get stacks of attacks from the pack with a huge crowd of riders trying to form today's breakaway.
Jakub Danacik
José Antonio Baños Ballester
Thomas De Gendt
Danilo Di Luca
David Loosli
Eric Berthou
William Walker
Carlos Barredo
Andrei Grivko
Benoît Vaugrenard
Florian Stalder
Thomas Bontenackels
Brent Bookwalter
and
Steven Cummings
Make up this early move with Grivko nailing the sprint ahead of Vaugranard and Stalder.
It's the type of stage that you would have expected at least one of the Team Spyker riders to involve themselves in and grumpy at missing the move the team in black chase it down.
When the next attack goes clear though once again there are no Spyker riders in it.
It's Barredo, Stalder, Banos Ballester, Danacek, De Gendt, Di Luca, Walker, Vaugranard, Grivkp and a new name in
Ian Bibby
The latter name takes the one 3rd category climb of the day ahead of Grivko and Bontenackets - Barredo had a good amount of points and strangely decides not to bother going for them.
These ten are given the privilege of being the break of the day and with a good combination of experienced hands it has a good chance. The most experienced hand of all Di Luca takes the second sprint ahead of Stalder and Vaugranard. Meanwhile the pack is bunching up on the climbs and so it is hardly stretched.
But suddenly with Bacardi and Proximus Trek deciding to try and do some chasing we get a number of riders dropped on these little hills including GC rider
Jaroslav Popovych
Fortunately for Popo the pack canot maintain its momentum in the hilly parcours and Bacardi drop off the front to be replaced by Spyker but it is ceremonial more than anything as Spyker do not look like they want to chase things down.
Popovich gets back on and the Wiggle manager's blood pressure reduces.
The break then maintain a lead between five and six minute between 50km to go and 30km to go with Walker rolling through the last intermediate sprint ahead of Grivko and Danacek.
The best placed GC rider here is Barredo (23rd at 47.30) and it is he who decides to stretch things out with 18km to go.
Walker and Grivko try and go with him, but Walker cannot live with it and has to drop back to the chasers. So Grivko and Barredo are out in front as they go under 10km to go.
The gap back to the three chasers which is Walker, Di Luca and Bibby is 1.16 with 10km to go. These three look like they may have missed the boat though Walker simply did not have the legs.
Indeed they have as with 2.5km to go we have another B&O rider with a chance of victory, again the B&O tactic is to lead out. This time there is a tasty hill in the finale which worked for Keinath.
Barredo though is taking notes from Coppel's sprint the day before by sticking close to the B&O rider up the incline.
He then makes his move in the final 500m.
...and the Spanish rider takes a win in his home tour.
Grivko is the third successive top two for B&O they must be happy with that. Behind Di Luca is third ahead of Walker and Bibby, these three will be tinged with disappointment that they could not make the lead two.
Vaugranard wins the battle from the rest with Danacek and De Gendt. Banos Ballester and Stalder are both distanced in the finale.
Bontenackets was caught late on so the bunch sprint is for 11th and green jersey Van Stayen takes it to continue to pray for a green jersey win.
Grillo (Sony) rather surprisinglyu is 12th with Hoffman and Keinath next ahead of Roelandts.

Points
It is going to be tough for the sprinters to hold off the GC men with only two of the remaining stages flat enough for them and the lack of ability to chase down these breakaways. Van Stayen builds up his lead over Roelandts though.

Mountains
Barredo concerned himself with picking up the stage win, it was only a 3rd category 6-4-2 pointer but still could have nipped up the road to take it you would have thought. Real mountains tomorrow though.
