The residual climbs of the Pyrenees welcome us in the opening of this stage with an early 1st category climb easing down to a 2nd and finally a 3rd category climb before flatter but lumpy entries into the stage finish.
Madrazo is way ahead in the King of the Mountains, today could be a big chance for a breakaway rider to cash in.
Jocelin Maillet
and
Francisco Perez Sanchez
make early dashes.
They are joined quickly by
Dominique Cornu
and
Nico Keinath
Keinath is now attempting for breakaway's though is still also B&O's team leader, meanwhile Jack Wolfskin's time triallers are now trying to show they are something more!
Seven more riders bridge to make it 11 up front:
Francisco José Terciado
Mauro Facci
Andrey Zeits
Thomas Faiers
Kevin De Weert
Florian Stalder
Ian Bibby
Santander don't really look like letting the break have an easy time.
That said this does look like the perfect terrain for a break and having got up the road young Faiers tries to keep the pace going, this has to be the best chance for a Pendletons win in this years race so far.
Faiers takes a sprint ahead of countryman Bibby and Stalder, but the King of the Mountains contender Facci drops back to the pack leaving just Terciado(18), Maillet (16), Keinath(10) and Faiers (2) the only previous points scorers.
Santander have kept the break to withing a couple of minutes and several dozy GC men are caught by a 35 - > 83 split in the pack.
But fortunately for all the favourites they get back on.
In the break just one rider De Weert struggles to hang on until the very top with Stalder taking the the prime with Faiers second and Cornu third.
No-one is really making a move in the mountains classification and this break is really struggling to get much of a gap. Terciado got 4th here to go to 26 points, Maillet is up to 22 and Keinath 14.
Serge Pauwels
goes across to try and offer support!
Wiggle send a second rider forward also in
Tom Diggle
who should be helpful in hilly parcours.
Finally now with 100 or so km left the break does manage to establish itself with 11 riders.
Keinath, Terciado, Diggle, Bibby, Faiers, Cornu, Stalder, Zeits, Pauwels, Perez Sanchez and Maillet.
Keinath takes the next two King of the mountains primes to move up to 30 KoM points, it's been a useful day for the German. Terciado and Maillet could have moved forward but can only gather minor points.
With 50km left and the big climbs out of the way the gap the lead 11 have is at 5.30 which is going to be difficult to claw back.
Joost Posthuma
and
Jerome Coppel
fancy they are quick enough to bridge.
They don't find it easy though in the rain and the fairly tricky wind and soon drop back to the pack, not that the pack are denting the break who still hold 5.30 with 40km left.
The gap doesn't change much in the next 10 km with
Danilo Di Luca
and
Marc De Maar
strangely attacking the pack in between and getting a couple of minutes ahead.
They will not make the break though, and the lead 11 are eyeing each other up as they come under 10km to go. We finish on an uphill today, so it will be tough to predict Bibby of Wiggle has probably the best 'kick' and with teammate Diggle here he could be the favourite but it is marginal.
One rider perhaps making the biggest rookie mistake is Tommy Faiers who leads them into the last 3500m.
Perez Sanchez looks the veteren here sitting in 2nd wheel ready to pounce, Terciado, Pauwels, Diggle, Maillet, Keinath, Cornu, Stalder, Bibby and Zeits in that order.
Tenth in the train is not perhaps close enough order for Bibby who moves forward with a move made by Keinath, Cornu and Stalder. Diggle crosses to the back of Bibby's wheel as Wiggle try to set up a train.
Pauwels, Terciado, Maillet and Zeits look out of this and Bibby really needs to play closer attention.
As they come under 1km to go the hill starts to get a bit steeper, no one really can get on Keinaths shoulder to begin with.
The powerful Belgian TTer Cornu is closest to the young German with Stalder pluckily living with this duo. The Bibby/Diggle move looks doomed though as gaps appear ahead of them.
Cornu cannot match Keinath here and Stalder also seems to be content with third.
Keinath takes the 13th stage with a very strong last 2km uphill sprint. He had a good Giro last year and this win makes it a good Vuelta too this year!
Cornu is second with Stalder a fine third ahead of Faiers and the Wiggle duo in 5th and 6th.
Behind Di Luca and De Maar come in at 4.10, with the pack led in by Valverde and Madrazo at nearly six minutes.
The rain may have put of the pack for a chase, though the biggest problem was that Santander were left to do it all themselves. Still a good morale booster for the numbers challenged B and O team here at the Vuelta.
Stage results
Rodrigues and Arroyo look injured just about limpiung home today, they'll need to recover in the coming days for their team leaders.

Points
It was too hilly for Van Stayen and Roelandts to put any pressure on Madrazo who actually just added one point today despite sprinting in just behind Valverde.

Keinath went up to 30 points as Terciado and Maillet really didn't make the most of the break. Stalder was highest points scorer of the day with 22 KoM points, but these riders will need to go again to put pressure on the leaders.

Team
Wiggle could not make the most really of two men at the finish but they do make a tasty move in the team classification. Festina are still some ten minutes ahead, but look unlikely to risk too many breaks in the coming days. UBS also got a guy up the road and move into the top five and Pendletons close in.
