The Vuelta takes it's trip across to Spain today, though it is yet another long day and the finish is set on a bit of a downhil after a what is a steady long slightly uphill drag in the last 60km. It's obviously not the same type of thing that awaits the riders in a few days time but more of a bit of a dampener on a potential breakaway.
But six riders are happy to try their luck and Milka are up to their tricks again with Maxime Bouet just nine seconds behind race leader Martin Reimer the big dangerman in the break.
He is accompanied by
Matej Mugerli
Evgeni Sokolov
Tom Leezer
Bradley Wiggins
and
Jesse Sergent
Bacardi have place two men up here with Sokolov having done well yesterday the Giro winning team are obviously looking for something before the mountainous stuff tomorrow. They act as spoilers at the first sprint with Mugerli managing to fend off Bouet at the first sprint.
Sergent takes the third place, but the important news is that Bouet moves to five seconds behind Reimer. Milka have kept trying since that opening day time trial, it seems as if they are on a never ending mission to snatch that leaders jersey.
The big moment arrives at the second sprint when Bacardi are unable to prevent Bouet from taking the win at the prime ahead of Sergent and Mugerli.
So Spyker are both virtually and actually behind even if they make the catch, still though they chase I guess the young riders jersey still needs to be defended.
They will not let Bouet et al take an easy breakaway win and the break have seven fairly catchable minutes on the pack with 100km to go. The last of the days sprints goes to Mugerli with Bouet taking second place and moving now to 34 points in the points competition.
Sergent is third as the other riders are again locked out of the points and time bonuses. The liklihood of this break succeeding is pretty low with the gap down to three minutes with 50km to go.
However we saw yesterday that Sokolov joined by two late breakaways was close to getting home. Wiggins and Leezer not really present in the sprints go with an energised Bouet with 30km to go.
But Spyker probably realising that the jersey is gone have now handed over the pace making to the hungry Carmuese team.
Jurgen Roelandts
was really powerful yesterday, mind you
Mark Cavendish
was not too far away and his team are there also.
They make the catch with 16km to go, the finish is not the easiest and there a few riders shelled out the back.
Milka amazingly have not finished as Jerome Coppel attacks.
He attacks with 11km to go and still leads as they come close to the peak of the this steady slight climb with 5.5km to go. Mind you Carmuese and now Wikipedia are chasing hard.
4km left and Coppel has just 24 seconds, you fancy the sprinters have enough to challenge here and they form and orderly queue behind the Carmuese boys.
It is again
Wouter Weylandt
Steven Caethoven
leading out Roelandts with
Juan Van Heerden
Óscar Avelino
Mark Cavendish
Maximiliano Richeze
Nolan Hoffman
Paride Grillo
Matt Rowe
Michael Van Stayen
Dan Holloway
behind.
The catch is made on Coppel with 2.2km to go.
Van Heerden is in a much better position today and is determined to make the move on Roelandts a bit earlier having struggled to overhaul him in the last kilometre yesterday.
Rowe is making another one of his crazy moves, Van Heerden and Holloway are forced to try this one out and follow him being as they are even further back than the Brit. As they come under the kite Roelandts has been overtaken by Van Heerden and now Avelino.
Roelandts is getting boxed and really needs to move into empty space, mind you now the fast moving Cavendish has come around the fading Avelino. Van Heerden has some bike lengths with 800m left. Van Steyen and Holloway are coming around Rowe also.
As Avelino continues to fade, Van Heerden is beginning to rock and roll as he feels riders coming at him from his right hand side. It's the other Van - Van Stayen who has the bit between his teeth. Cavendish, Holloway, Rowe and Richeze are moving on him also.
Making no move though is Roelandts who looks out of energy, as does Avelino.
As we close to the line one Van takes the other.
Van Stayen takes his Vuelta victory, Bacardi snatch this one away from Wikipedia.
Cavendish just holds off the young American Holloway, Richeze is 5th, Rowe 6th and Roelandts 7th. It is going to make things tight in the points jersey standings.
Behind though there is a gap that has opened up ahead of Sebastian Lang and Joost Posthuma
The clock is saying 1.30 plus this must have opened in the last 5km as the riders struggled over that last lip of the climb. The big news here is that red jersey elect
Maxime Bouet has been caught behind with Eric Berthou. None of the long term GC candidates were caught out here really, but for Milka this is a bitter blow did the late attack of Coppel contribute towards this?
Reimer keeps the jersey from one more day.

GC
Reimer keeps that GC lead by 4 seconds on De Gendt. Aulas moves into a surprise 3rd with riders ahead of him dropping down from behind behind that late split. Long term GC favourites are moving into view after Coppel and they know that business picks up tomorrow.

Points
Reimer amazingly also keeps his points lead, although he has to share the podium with one very large ego in Cavendish. Reimer gets to whisper in the Manxman's ear hey I have a Grand Tour stage! Van Stayen is one point behind, Roelandts and Van Heerden are close too.

Reimer takes one last look at the podium as he leaves, difficult to see him being up here tomorrow.
