Today is the calm before the storm – tomorrows long and steep in places climb of La Linea, perhaps the queen stage of this year’s Vuelta a Columbia. But first todays stage which is rated as flat but being in Columbia has a whopping climb in the middle with 20 KOM points going to the first rider over the top.
It makes picking todays stage winner a bit of a lottery – with the luckless sprinters having a major question mark over their ability to last the course. With the long descent it may well suit a breakaway with most teams probably thinking of tomorrow.
Three riders go on the attack
The Yamaha rider is once again Andrew Bajadali, who is well placed to take the KOM jersey. He is joined by Pirelli’s Tiralongo who is also up there in this competition but is sufficiently behind Bajadali that he cannot really take the polka dots over him today. Also here briefly is Rasmus Quaade of Unicredit but he cannot stick with the other two up this first climb.
The leaders are not given too much rope from the peleton either, it is Red Bull who are leading the chase.
Red Bull leading the charge
Over the climb it is Bajadali who takes the 20 points over Tiralongo, Jordi Grau sprints out of the peleton to take third ahead of the Red Bull boys. It means that Bajadali takes over the KOM leadership and with only two days of primes left he can start to dream of some glory perhaps. For the stage though Red Bull seem to have an eye on it as they catch the break shortly on the main descent.
Brian Vandborg tries a downhill move.
Vandborg shows some less than futile resistence
But again this is chased back quickly, a bunch sprint appears likely.
Peleton back together again
It marks a rare easy race for the race leader’s Benfica team, who may be hoping that Van den Broeck can get up for some sprint primes. His team will be glad of being saved for tomorrows brutal La Linea climb.
An easy day for VandenBroeck
As we come into the finale, the sprinters are struggling to make the front of the peleton. The downhill nature is making it difficult for the trains to form.
4.1km to go – your guess is as good as mine
It is a unlikely source that makes the best move as the sprint starts, yes ladies and gentlemen Tom Last moves to first!
Last is first – in Columbia’s bizarre world.
With 2km to go, it seems as if we have four riders in this. Tom Last (Youtube), Portela (Bimbo Nutella) is to his right, Orozco (Red Bull) is on his left and Betencourt is behind him. However the Youtube man has mistimed his move and as we move into the slightly uphill final drag other riders move up. It is Orozco who goes past Last with Betancourt also there.
It is anyones game with 800m to go
Manarelli (Red Bull) and Damian Martinez (Quiksilver) are there as is Sambris of Quiksilver, but making the fastest move of all is yesterdays stage winner Vitor Rodrigues! The road runs along with Orozco desperately trying to hold on over Rodrigues and Sambris.
Who will be declared winner?
The Columbian organisors decide to award victory to Victor Orozco... good for them
