Last chance for the climbers to gain some time before tomorrows final time trial. A long Cat.2 only and a short final climb are the last ramps. The top favourites being very close together the weaker time trialists need to gain time today.
8 breakaway riders:
Laengen
Öste-Macdonald
Poels
Rosch
Hernandez Gutierrez
Stubbe
Tolleson
Favilli
GC wise no danger here but KoM jersey could be indeed. With the 2nd in that competition, Rosch in the group he could equal Stybar by taking all 3 KoM sprints. That said the last is 2km ahead of the finish, which would probably mean, that the breakaway has to take the stage as well.
6 UBS riders ahead of Amador.
60km and 5min gap but so far it was flat.
First smaller Cat.3 and as Poels takes it ahead of Tolleson and Hernandez Gutierrez the decision is made. Rosch can`t climb up to Stybar any longer. Obiously he wasn`t even interested.
Half way up the Cat.2 we have some interesting selection.
Several riders did attack or more likely just accelerate and are ahead of the Amador peloton.
Hacecky
Fothen
Samwel
Gadret
Henao
De La Fuente
Cobo
Sörensen
Navarro
So some very high placed riders and Lotto and Festina even with two riders in there to keep a high pace.
Bacardi might have had bad luck as Intxausti could have tried to join as well with Navarro doing the pace. But the Spaniard did puncture 1km before and is in the Amador group.
Next to UBS also Pearl Adidas and Wiggle aren`t happy with that group but they can`t catch those riders and the gap stays in between 30-50s.
Machado realizes the danger and attacks.
Sella is right behind him doing the same. This is of course an even bigger danger now.
So it`s Puma doing it again. Just like on the last mountain stage it`s Schwab doing a tremendous job to bring them back.
Rosch takes the Cat.2 but this won`t be enough for him. He must be fine with the 2nd, which is still nice for him.
Schwab`s acceleration did split the peloton and we have some mentionable names behind like Jaramillo. But the biggest favourites are in the Amador group.
30km and the last section of the long Cat.2 for the peloton or better 60 rider group.
Fothen Henao and Samwel attack again.
Also De la Fuente, Velits and a bit later Pedraza.
Those riders join the breakaway and again we have a bigger field being a few seconds ahead of the peloton.
Intxausti, Martin, Van den Broeck and Sella btw. also joined the front group making it 19 riders being chased by 31 riders around Amador.
Despite having Riblon and Zaugg with him, Amador decides to higher the pace on his own. Understandable with all those names being in front.
5km left and still a 36s gap with the final climb starting soon.
Keinath tries to attack early on to bridge the gap. Amador smartly stays behind him to move faster to the front.
Sella and Intxausti realize first that those two groups will fusion again. So they attack again with 1,7km to go.
A long line on top of the real climb with the last km being flat.
Sella, Martin, Intxausti, Henao, Velits, Fothen and then already Amador being the first riders on top with a bunch being around Amador then.
And Sella takes profit out of this small gap he created when going over the top and wins todays stage.
Dan Martin behind him with Velits in 3rd ahead of Henao and Intxausti.
A clear gap behind the top5 as Amador leads in the next group ahead of Van den Broeck. So both will finish within the same time just as Pedraza, Foten, Machado etc.
But they all lose 30s on the top5, which moves Dan Martin into 2nd now ahead of VdB.
Also there was another gap behind Costagli in 24th. Riders caught behind like Keinath, Sörensen or Scarponi will lose another 36s.
So tomorrows time trial will deliver the winner and with Amador being 14s ahead of Martin, another 8s to VdB and +6s to Machado in 4th then, it`s still very close, while Intxausti is already 32s behind the Portugese then.
