After quite some time off, here is the next stage of Colombia. I guess you have waited enough. So here it is.
It does not have as much graphic as I usually use. But as this morning I didn`t expect me to continue Colombia, I can`t use too much time on it. Sorry for that but I think it`s more important to finish this.
It`s slightly different from the preview thread. Due to narrow roads it had to be changed a bit. Still 4 tough mountains and a hard finish in the end.
Van den Broeck and Amador are within the same time and also behind it`s still very close. So stay tuned for the rest of the report.
7 riders in the breakaway. And it`s some action in there as we have Stybar as KoM leader, Rosch as 2nd in that competition and Strick (6th).
Also in there Peterson, Poels, Hernandez Gutierrez and Agnoli.
Stybar is a well deserved KoM leader and he also shows this at this first mountain where he wins it ahead of Poels, Hernandez and Rosch, who attacked too early.
Peterson and Sprick in the end. Also the French did attack too early here.
Campero comes over next as he leads a 2nd group including the dropped Agnoli and Nolf. Campero btw. is another high ranked KoM guy.
On the descent the two groups fusion. That said, not all of them as Nolf is somewhere in between still.
Small Cat.3 bump and Rosch takes it over Sprick and Stybar.
Bigger jump to the next climb as not much had happen so far. Sprick easily takes it ahead of Rosch and Poels. Stybar slowly has to pay tribute to his attacks today and on the recent stages as he can`t take more than 4 points as last of this group.
Mainly UBS is doing the pace with some turns by the Puma riders. 4'17 is the gap with 62km to go and 2 more climbs.
50km to go and we start the 2nd last climb when 4 riders attack out of the peloton. Not the most dangerous but still top20 riders in
Jaramillo (22./8'22)
Gadret (16./5'35)
Navarro (18./5'53)
Cobo (25./12'08)
At half time of that climb they join the front group making it 12 riders being 3'30 ahead of the favourite group which is down to 51 riders. But all GC riders were careful and are inside.
Time for Van den Broeck`s best helper as Schwab comes to the front slowly reducing the gap.
On top Sprick again wins it. Rosch being 2nd again gaining points but Stybar did recover and comes over as 3rd still keeping the lead.
Gadret, Navarro, Cobo and Hernandez all take some more points.
15km and last climb reached for the group. Still 3'20 gap to the peloton. So it might be close.
But the attacks begin in there as Fothen goes first followed by Sella.
Also Samwel follows. Surely a surprise so far in this race as 11th at the moment.
Schwab did a good job bringing all of them back, but Fothen can`t be stopped. He attacks again.
Meanwhile the group breaks ahead and the first rider, Stybar, is caught.
More riders in the attack.
Sella, Samwel, Fothen and this time also Intxausti.
Still 8min for the breakaway which is 2'50 ahead.
As only rider Sella was able to create a gap. As 7th with 1'33 he is a decent danger.
Intxausti kept the high pace to bring him back and this led to a huge split in the group.
Within Intxausti only a few riders made it which are:
Fothen
Keinath
Martin
Pedraza
Amador
Machado
De la Fuente
Samwel
Rosch
So quite a few are dropped.
Biggest name of course Van den Broeck in the leader jersey as also Henao or Velits.
But thanks to Schwab they are back together. Also Sella is soon to be caught now.
Other riders though struggle now like Brambilla, Sörensen or Costagli.
Cobo, Navarro, Gadret, Jaramillo, Poels and Peterson are left in the group with 5km to go and down to 1'24.
4,5km and Machado attacks this time followed by Sella, Martin and Pedraza.
The breakaway is almost caught by those attackers with Gadret still trying it again.
This time Van den Broeck was more careful and even did the most work to bring everything back together.
Time for Fothen to attack once more.
But it wasn`t enough. Under the Flamme Rouge he is caught again and Amador leads the group onto the last kilometer ahead of Van den Broeck. What a fight between those two.
Amador in the lead ahead of Machado and Van den Broeck with Sella coming on the right.
Those 4 look the strongest and opened a small gap.
But Van den Broeck is just not as strong as those two while Sella has used too much energy with his attacks.
So it`s down to Amador and Machado with Van den Broeck trying to avoid a gap.
Photo finish!
But in the end Amador is called the stage winner which will also give him the GC lead now with Machado being 3rd after that stage due to a 10s gap to the rest of them.
Van den Broeck at least comes in 3rd to take a few bonus seconds which move him to 2nd only.
Intxausti, Martin, Denifl, Henao, Navarro, Sella and Velits complete the top 10. But all favourites behind the duo are counted with 10s.
Siutsou, Gadret, Schwab etc. follow in a 45s group while Brambilla, Sörensen and Costagli lose some minutes today.
And last but not least one abandon. Wim De Vocht finished as last today and mustn`t start tomoroow.
